Teledyne Technologies is a diversified maker of specialized sensors, cameras, instruments and defense electronics, organized into four segments: Digital Imaging (thermal and visible-spectrum cameras, X-ray and other imaging sensors - about half of revenue), Instrumentation (marine, environmental and test-and-measurement equipment), Aerospace and Defense Electronics, and Engineered Systems. The company has grown for decades primarily by acquiring and integrating smaller technology businesses, the largest being the 2021 purchase of FLIR Systems, which roughly doubled its size and added most of its thermal-imaging capability. Because Teledyne grows mainly by acquisition, a large and growing share of its reported depreciation and amortization each year - $216.6 million out of $336.3 million in 2025 - is the amortization of intangible assets (customer relationships, acquired technology, trademarks) recorded when past deals were bought. That amortization is a real accounting charge but not a cash cost, so it is added back when we measure the cash the business actually generates. The important judgment call is what to do with that add-back: rather than let it inflate the earnings level, we have carried its effect in how fast we expect earnings to grow rather than in the earnings figure itself, since the assets being amortized (an average of about six years of remaining life across the portfolio) genuinely lose value over time even though Teledyne has, in practice, kept replacing them with new acquisitions. On that basis we estimate the cash the business generates for owners (operating cash flow, less the swings from working capital and stock-based pay, less the capital spending needed simply to maintain the existing business) at roughly $23 per share in 2025, essentially flat versus 2024's $23.11 and only modestly above 2022's $21.65. We used the four years since Teledyne fully absorbed FLIR (2022-2025) as the base level for the valuation, since the business today - roughly $6.1 billion of revenue split across the four segments described above - is materially different from, and larger than, the company before that acquisition; the years immediately before are not representative of the company as it now stands, and 2021 itself is excluded because it captured only about seven months of FLIR's results plus one-time acquisition financing activity. Growth in that per-share cash figure has clearly slowed - about 5% in 2023, 1.6% in 2024 and just over 1% in 2025 - mainly because capital spending stepped up sharply in 2025 (to $117 million from $84 million, with management guiding to about $150 million in 2026 to upgrade facilities and support growth) and because a large one-time working-capital swing accompanied roughly $820 million spent on four acquisitions completed during the year, the largest being the purchase of Excelitas Technologies' optical-systems and defense-electronics businesses (Qioptiq) for about $703 million, closed in the first quarter. Because that deal is already mostly reflected in the 2025 results, we do not assume it drives materially faster growth in 2026; our base case starts the ten-year forecast at roughly this year's trailing pace and only builds toward a more normal mid-single-digit rate over several years, as the acquisitions completed in 2025 and a small one completed in early 2026 (DD-Scientific, a UK gas-sensor maker) fully annualize and as the higher-growth Aerospace and Defense Electronics segment - which has grown from 14% to 17% of revenue over the past two years - continues to take a larger share of the business. Beyond the ten-year forecast, we expect the company's more-than-two-decade record of self-funded, disciplined bolt-on acquisitions - made without a single goodwill write-off across dozens of deals - to keep sustaining, though not necessarily accelerating, this level of owner earnings for a further period before the growth assumption is fully retired. The less favorable case assumes several risks already visible in the filings actually bite at the same time: a slowdown in Aerospace and Defense Electronics and Digital Imaging tied to government-budget pressure, higher costs from tariffs and from China's export restrictions on rare-earth and specialty materials used in some Digital Imaging and defense products (Teledyne discloses that several key suppliers are China-based, and about 4% of revenue comes directly from China-based customers), and no further use of acquisitions to offset a soft patch in the underlying businesses, with roughly $2.0 billion of remaining debt limiting flexibility. In this case per-share owner earnings would decline modestly for a few years and then stabilize at a lower, flatter level. The more favorable case assumes the demonstrated pattern of the last several years continues cleanly: the acquisition program keeps adding earnings at a similar pace to its recent history, the shift toward defense electronics continues, and operating margins keep expanding modestly the way they have since 2023 (from about 18.4% to 18.8%), without assuming any windfall the company has not already shown it can deliver. Putting these cases together and discounting the resulting cash flows at a standard 6% rate (the long-run government bond rate plus a small margin, used the same way for every company we look at, since risk is reflected in how the cases differ rather than in the discount rate), the less favorable case is worth roughly $346 per share today, the middle case roughly $535, and the more favorable case roughly $630. Given how much of that value depends on the acquisition program continuing to perform as it has, the margin-of-safety price sits meaningfully below the middle estimate - around $416 per share - to leave room for error, rather than at what the business might be worth if everything goes right. One accounting item worth flagging: a $52.5 million non-cash trademark write-down was recorded in 2024 within Digital Imaging and Instrumentation. It has no effect on the cash-based figures above, but it is a reminder that not every acquired brand performs as expected, which is part of why we have not assumed the acquisition program accelerates earnings growth beyond its recent, more modest pace.
