AMETEK is a diversified manufacturer of precision instruments and electromechanical devices, organized around two segments: Electronic Instruments (process, power, aerospace, lab and medical instrumentation) and Electromechanical (specialty motors, thermal management and other engineered devices). For decades the company has grown by pairing steady organic demand from its instrument franchises with an ongoing program of bolt-on acquisitions funded from its own cash flow, most recently the 2025 purchase of FARO Technologies, a 3D measurement and metrology company, for roughly $1.0 billion. We estimate the cash the business generates for its owners - operating cash flow after removing the swings caused by working-capital timing, stock compensation, and the capital spending needed just to keep the existing plant running - using the median of the last five fiscal years, which works out to about $6.42 per share. We used the last five years rather than a longer look-back because AMETEK's earnings power has moved up structurally over the past decade (richer instrument mix, sustained margin improvement) rather than cycled up and down, so an older window would understate what the business can generate today. Base case: growth moderates from roughly 9% a year over the next three years to about 5% a year by year ten - in line with, but somewhat below, the company's own most recent full-year growth (owner earnings grew about 14% in fiscal 2025), reflecting the normal difficulty of sustaining outsized growth as the base gets larger. Beyond year ten we assume owner earnings simply hold at the year-ten level rather than keep compounding, since we have no specific basis for assuming the acquisition program continues indefinitely at the same pace. That produces a base-case value of about $185 per share. Bear case (roughly a one-in-ten downside): a cyclical pullback across AMETEK's capital-goods-exposed markets - process instrumentation, semiconductor and aerospace capital spending - similar in scale to the 2020 downturn, compounded by the additional U.S. tariffs the company disclosed during 2025 squeezing margins faster than its pricing actions can offset, and slower-than-planned integration of the FARO acquisition (the estimates behind its customer-relationship intangible were flagged by the company's auditors as unusually uncertain). Owner earnings fall roughly 8% in year one before recovering to a permanently slower 3-4% growth rate, reflecting a business carrying more acquisition-related debt and facing tougher competition in the newly acquired metrology line. This produces a value of about $120 per share. Bull case (roughly a one-in-ten upside): FARO integrates well and the company's core end markets - process automation, semiconductor and aerospace capital spending - strengthen together, while the acquisition program keeps finding and closing attractively priced deals, consistent with the company's long record. Growth runs 13-16% in the first several years, tapering to about 7% by year ten. This produces a value of about $251 per share. In all three cases, more than half of the estimated value comes from what we expect the business to be worth after year ten rather than from the next ten years of cash flow alone. That's a reasonable feature of a durable, diversified industrial franchise, but it means the estimate leans more on confidence in AMETEK's staying power than on any near-term forecast. Accounting note: AMETEK's reported cash flow already adds back roughly $420 million a year of depreciation and intangible amortization, most of it from prior acquisitions. We don't treat that add-back as free money - the more conservative growth path in the bear case, and the decision not to assume continued acquisition-fueled growth beyond year ten, are how we account for the fact that acquired intangible assets eventually wear out and must be replaced by fresh investment. Putting this together, the margin-of-safety price is approximately $144, which builds in a meaningful cushion against the downside case.
