IDEX is a collection of roughly forty niche industrial businesses organized into three segments: Health & Science Technologies (precision fluidics, optical filters, sealing, and the Mott filtration business bought in 2024), Fluid & Metering Technologies (pumps, flow meters and valves for water, energy, chemical and agriculture customers), and Fire & Safety/Diversified Products (Hale and Godiva fire pumps, Hurst rescue tools, BAND-IT clamping, paint dispensing). These are small, specified-in products where switching is costly, which is why gross margins sit in the mid-40s. Sales were $3.46 billion in 2025, about half outside the United States. Owner earnings. We measure the cash the owners actually keep: operating cash flow with year-to-year working-capital swings removed, less the true cost of stock compensation and the capital spending needed to maintain the plants. Because IDEX's capital spending is only about 2% of sales, almost all of it is maintenance. On that basis owner earnings were $8.54 a share in 2025, $7.80 in 2024, $7.50 in 2023 and $8.05 in 2022, up from $4.41 in 2016. Amortization of acquired intangibles ($131 million in 2025) is a non-cash charge and is not deducted; we treat it as sunk purchase cost and carry the risk of acquired businesses fading in the growth path and the bear case instead. Our checks tie these figures to net income plus depreciation and amortization within about 4% in every year. Previous figures we published were built on a different basis and are not comparable. To value the business before its lenders, we add back cash interest paid ($72 million in 2025). We anchor on the median of 2022-2025, about $8.48 a share, because IDEX was substantially reshaped by $2.8 billion of acquisitions between 2021 and 2024, and those four years include both the post-pandemic order surge and the 2023-2024 customer destocking in semiconductors, life sciences and chemicals, so they span a full short cycle. The first half of 2026 supports that level: sales rose about 8% and operating cash flow about 14% from a year earlier. Debt. IDEX owed about $1.87 billion at June 30, 2026, mostly fixed-rate notes: $500 million at 4.95% due 2029, $500 million at 3.00% due 2030 and $500 million at 2.625% due 2031, plus about $100 million of private notes due 2028 and a revolving credit line due November 2027. It held $621 million of cash. After setting aside working cash and allowing for the low fixed coupons on the 2030 and 2031 notes, we deduct about $1.21 billion, or $16.30 a share. Leverage is roughly two times cash earnings, well inside the 3.5 times covenant on the bank line. Base case ($168). Owner earnings grew about 9.5% in 2025, helped by a full year of Mott. We do not extend that rate. The base assumes 2% a year for ten years, then 1% afterward. What puts that growth in the bag is demonstrated pricing power: in 2025 IDEX raised prices across every segment, which more than covered lower volumes. Organic sales fell 2% in 2024 and rose 1% in 2025, so we credit no volume growth and no future acquisitions. IDEX has bought businesses steadily for decades, but its recent purchases have earned close to what the money costs, so they add little value per share. The business is worth about $184 a share, less $16 of net debt. Bear case ($114). Earnings start at the 2024 level and do not grow. An industrial downturn in years three through five cuts business cash flow 20% for two years and 10% in the third. That is deeper than either the 2020 shutdown, when owner earnings per share fell about 10%, or the 2023-2024 destocking, so the case is not just an extension of today's conditions. We also charge about $6.70 a share for one large acquisition that is overpaid for and written down, because serial deal-making is how this company deploys its cash. Even at the trough, cash earnings cover interest more than six times, so the debt is not the risk. The business is worth about $130 a share, less $16 of debt. Bull case ($258). Earnings start at the 2025 level, which the business has already reached, and grow 3.5% a year for a decade as pricing continues and bolt-on acquisitions keep earning a modest return, then 2% thereafter. The business is worth about $274, less $16 of debt. Margin-of-safety price. We are fairly confident in the earnings level. Owner earnings per share have not fallen more than about 10% in any year of the past decade, including 2020, and no single customer or product dominates sales. The worst plausible outcome is a long industrial recession combined with a large, badly priced acquisition funded with debt. The balance sheet would survive it: leverage near two times, no maturity larger than $500 million, and the nearest material maturity is the 2027 credit line. The things we are most likely to be wrong about are growth and the value of acquisitions. If IDEX never grows again from today's level, the shares are worth about $124. If a downturn hits and an acquisition goes bad, they are worth about $114. The price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period, and the dividend of about $2.88 a share is roughly 4% a year of the margin-of-safety price. From $68, a recovery to the no-growth value within about three years, plus dividends, implies about 20% a year. The bear outcome reached over four years implies a return close to that target. Above about $75, the bear case no longer comes near the target in a reasonable time, which is why the price is set where it is. What would make this wrong: a lasting decline in volumes in the larger units (pumps, Mott filtration, semiconductor and life-science fluidics) that price increases could no longer offset, or a major acquisition financed with heavy borrowing that pushes leverage toward the covenant limit.

Sales geography
United States (about 51% of sales, across the Northeast, Midwest, South and West) and international (about 49%), led by Europe (Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy) and Asia (China, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore), with smaller sales in Canada, Mexico, Latin America and the Middle East.
Historical growth strategy
A serial acquirer of niche, engineered-component businesses (pumps, flow meters, fluidics, optics, sealing, fire and rescue tools), buying a few bolt-ons most years and occasional larger platforms such as Mott in 2024, funded from operating cash flow and modest borrowing, then running them under a decentralized 80/20 operating discipline with steady price increases.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a long secular uptrend from the early 2010s that peaked near $290 in late 2021, followed by a multi-year downtrend of lower highs as the post-pandemic industrial boom unwound, bottoming in the $150s during the April 2025 sell-off. Since then the stock has carved out a base and attempted a recovery, but it has spent years below its 2021 high and would need to clear prior resistance in the low $200s to signal that the long-term uptrend has resumed; until then the pattern reads as a range-bound recovery within a broader consolidation.
