Mettler-Toledo is the global leader in precision weighing and measurement instruments used in laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing, industrial production, and food retail. Roughly a third of revenue is recurring service and consumables tied to a large installed base, which cushions swings in new-equipment orders. The business has been through a real cycle: a COVID-era surge in lab and diagnostics spending in 2021, an order-backlog hangover and destocking through 2023 as biopharma customers cut capital spending, and a gradual recovery in 2024-2025. We anchored this valuation to the median of owner earnings per share over 2021-2025 (about $39.47), rather than the most recent year, so the estimate isn't distorted by either the 2021 boom or the 2023 trough. The laboratory segment, which serves biopharma and life-science customers and is the largest segment, grew only 1% in local currency in 2025 - still soft next to 5% growth in industrial and 3% in food retailing. Our base case assumes this recovery continues gradually: owner earnings per share grow 6% in year one (below the roughly 8% actual growth posted in fiscal 2025, so we are not simply extrapolating last year's pace), averaging around 6-7% over the following several years before settling toward the high single digits, aided by continued but moderating share buybacks. We estimate the shares are worth roughly $1,149 under this case. Our bear case (roughly a one-in-ten outcome) assumes the life-science spending downturn reasserts itself, combined with continued tariff cost pressure (management disclosed about $50 million of incremental tariff costs in 2025, not yet fully offset) and continued China weakness. We also weighed that the company funded a large share of its 2025 buybacks with additional borrowing, leaving less room to sustain buybacks through a downturn. Owner earnings roughly stagnate for several years in this case; we estimate the shares would be worth around $698. Our bull case (roughly a one-in-ten outcome to the upside) assumes the lab segment's recovery accelerates as delayed biopharma projects resume and tariff costs are substantially offset through pricing and re-sourcing already underway. We estimate the shares would be worth around $1,495 in this case. For the years beyond our ten-year forecast, we treated the company's earning power as durable rather than wasting - it continually reinvests in new instrument platforms, and its service base renews itself from spending already inside our owner-earnings figure - so we used a slow (under 1% a year) perpetual growth rate for that period. That said, this long-run value still represents close to two-thirds of our base-case estimate, so a meaningful share of the total rests on Mettler-Toledo's installed base and service relationships continuing to generate cash near their year-ten level indefinitely. Because the downside case is a moderate rather than extreme risk profile, the margin-of-safety price sits a bit over 25% below our base-case estimate, at roughly $857. The risks we identified - end-market cyclicality, tariffs, China exposure, and buyback-related leverage - are already built into the bear case, so no additional business condition applies to that price.
