Business condition attached to the margin of safety Subsequent quarterly reports confirm that data-center-related backlog in the Communications and Infrastructure Solutions segments is holding steady or still growing, not shrinking - the FY2025 10-K already flagged some pullback in project-owner financing conditions for other parts of the business.
IES Holdings is a diversified electrical and technology infrastructure contractor operating through four segments: Residential (electrical work for homebuilders), Communications (network and data-center infrastructure build-out), Infrastructure Solutions (custom-engineered electro-mechanical products and repair services for industrial motors and generators), and Commercial & Industrial (electrical contracting for commercial and industrial buildings). Over the past several years the business has been transformed by surging demand tied to data-center construction: total backlog grew from roughly $1.8 billion to $2.4 billion in the most recent fiscal year, with the Communications segment backlog alone up nearly 50%, and the company has been investing to expand its own manufacturing and warehouse capacity to keep up. We measure the cash the business actually generates for owners - operating cash flow, minus the swings tied to growing receivables, inventory and unbilled work, minus stock-based compensation (a real cost even though it is non-cash), minus the portion of capital spending needed just to keep pace with today's business rather than fund new growth. On that basis, cash generation per share has moved from about $2 five years ago to roughly $6 two years ago, $11 last year, and nearly $14 in the fiscal year just completed - a period during which the mix of work shifted meaningfully toward the higher-margin, data-center-driven segments. Because that recent run has been so strong, we anchor our valuation on the middle of the last three fiscal years (about $11 per share) rather than on the most recent year alone, and we assume next year's growth (15%) comes in below the roughly 23% actually achieved this past year, to avoid simply extrapolating an unusually strong year forward. Our base case assumes the current four-segment mix keeps growing at a decelerating pace over the next decade - from the mid-teens down to mid-single digits by year ten - as data-center-related demand normalizes from its current surge but does not reverse, supported by the still-growing backlog. Beyond that we assume growth fades further over several more years to a flat, sustained level, reflecting a business whose services (ongoing maintenance and repair of industrial equipment, network infrastructure upkeep, contracting work) are recurring rather than tied to any single expiring contract or product. Because so much of the projected growth is concentrated in the next decade, a large share of our estimated value - roughly two-thirds - depends on the business sustaining close to today's earnings power indefinitely once that growth phase ends; we flag that explicitly rather than let it hide inside a single number. Our bear case assumes the data-center capital-spending cycle that has driven recent growth pauses for an extended period - a real risk, since large technology customers have historically paused build-outs before - combined with continued softness in project financing for the more traditional commercial and residential work (already visible in the most recent filing). In that scenario, per-share cash generation is roughly flat to down over the next few years before stabilizing at a lower, more traditional level for the industry. Our bull case assumes the data-center build-out continues for longer and at a faster pace than skeptics expect, margins keep expanding as the company's investments in owned capacity pay off, and further small acquisitions continue to consolidate its specialty repair business. Putting these together, we estimate the shares are worth roughly $390 in our base case, with a range of about $151 in a weak scenario to about $617 in a strong one. Given the wide range between the weak and central scenarios, the margin-of-safety price is set meaningfully below our base-case estimate - around $222 - to allow for the risk that the recent data-center-driven surge does not hold up as well as the base case assumes. A few accounting judgment calls worth noting: net income in two older years (fiscal 2016 and 2018) included large one-time, non-cash tax adjustments (a tax-asset valuation-allowance release, and a later revaluation tied to 2017 tax reform) - these affected reported net income but not actual cash generated, so they did not distort our estimates. We also treated the company's purchases of marketable securities for its captive insurance program - a growing, multi-million-dollar use of operating cash in the last two years - as a working-capital-style item to remove, consistent with how the company itself classifies it in its cash flow statement, though it could alternatively be viewed as a form of investment rather than a true swing in working capital; this is a conservative choice that lowers our recent-year cash generation figures. All figures reconciled exactly to the company's reported cash flow statements with no unexplained gaps.
