Five Below operates value-priced specialty stores across the United States, selling merchandise mostly priced at $5 and below (with a growing assortment of higher-priced items) across categories such as toys, beauty, tech accessories, candy and seasonal goods. The chain has grown from a single Philadelphia-area store in 2002 to 1,921 stores in 46 states as of the close of fiscal 2025, and management believes there is room to grow to more than 3,500 locations over time. New stores have historically been an attractive use of capital: the company's own model calls for roughly $2 million of first-year sales per store on an average cash investment of about $0.4 million, with payback in about a year. Fiscal 2024 was a difficult year - comparable-store sales fell 2.7% - and in December 2024 the company brought in a new President and CEO, Winnie Park. Fiscal 2025 showed the turnaround taking hold: comparable sales rose 12.8% on top of 150 net new stores, and profitability improved sharply. That rebound is real, but it followed an unusually weak prior year and coincided with an unusually light year of capital spending even as revenue grew sharply, so it should not simply be projected forward at the same pace. The cases below instead build from the store-count growth opportunity and a return to the more modest, low-single-digit comparable-sales growth the company posted in a typical year like fiscal 2023. A large majority of the merchandise Five Below sells is manufactured outside the United States, with China as the single largest source. Tariffs on Chinese and other imported goods are an ongoing cost risk given the company's thin, dollar-based price points, and that risk is reflected in the bear case below. The balance sheet carries no outstanding borrowings against its credit facility, which limits the kind of leverage-driven downside that shows up in more indebted retailers. Owner earnings - the cash the business generates after the reinvestment needed to keep the existing store base running, and after treating stock-based compensation as a real cost - have swung a good deal from year to year because of inventory timing and the pace of new-store construction. Looking at the four most recent normal years (fiscal 2022 through fiscal 2025, excluding the pandemic-distorted fiscal 2020-2021 period), the business has generated a median of roughly $2.66 of owner earnings per share. That is the starting point for each case below, each of which is carried forward for as long as its story can be defended and then held flat - Five Below has never operated as a mature, non-growing chain, so there is no track record to point to for growth continuing once the store rollout is largely finished, around year ten to eleven in each case. Bear case: comparable sales stay flat to slightly negative, echoing the fiscal 2024 experience, as tariff-driven cost pressure works against the company's value positioning and new-store growth slows toward 100 stores a year as the company manages capital more cautiously. We estimate the shares are worth about $46 on this path. Base case: comparable sales settle around 2% a year, close to the pre-turnaround normal seen in fiscal 2023, while the store count keeps expanding at roughly the recently guided pace of about 150 net new stores a year, slowing in percentage terms as the base grows toward the company's own disclosed opportunity of roughly 3,500-plus stores. We estimate the shares are worth about $83 on this path. Bull case: the turnaround already visible in fiscal 2025 continues to produce healthier comparable sales, around 4% a year, and store growth runs somewhat faster, back toward the 180-227 stores a year the company has actually opened in some recent years, again slowing as the chain approaches its own stated ceiling. We estimate the shares are worth about $101 on this path. Given the spread between these outcomes, the margin-of-safety price is set meaningfully below estimated worth - around $50 - to allow for the tariff and execution risks discussed above.
