Dollar General is the largest discount retailer in the United States by store count, with 20,959 stores in 48 states and Mexico at February 27, 2026, concentrated in small towns and lower-income neighborhoods in the South, Southwest, Midwest and East. Sales were $42.7 billion in fiscal 2025 (year ended January 30, 2026), most of it in everyday consumables. The business earns money by selling a narrow range of low-priced necessities from cheap, small boxes close to where customers live. How we measured earnings. We start with cash from operations, then remove the swings from working capital (inventory, payables, accruals, tax timing), deduct stock-based compensation as a real cost, and deduct only the store-maintenance share of capital spending, treating spending tied to sales growth as discretionary. Depreciation and other non-cash charges are correctly added back. On this basis owner earnings after interest were $7.18 per share in fiscal 2025, up from $5.06 in fiscal 2024, and $4.54 in fiscal 2023. Working capital helped reported cash flow by $784 million in fiscal 2025, which we removed, so the earnings we use are well below the $3.6 billion of reported operating cash flow. Because debt is valued separately below, the figures that drive the valuation add back the cash interest the company pays (about $290 million in fiscal 2025). That gives $8.49 per share of cash generated before lenders in fiscal 2025, versus $6.59 in fiscal 2024 and $6.14 in fiscal 2023. The level we anchor on. The company's cash generation ran between $5.90 and $11.74 per share over fiscal 2018 to fiscal 2025. That window contains the pre-pandemic years, the pandemic surge of fiscal 2020 to 2022 and the squeeze that followed, so it spans a full cycle for this business. Its median is $7.54 per share. We did not use the last twelve months as the anchor. What has changed. Fiscal 2023 and 2024 were a genuine downturn: cash generation before interest fell 48% from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2023 as theft, damaged goods, markdowns and wage costs hit a chain with about 20,000 fixed-rent stores. Since then the recovery is documented in the filings. Gross margin rose 107 basis points to 30.7% in fiscal 2025 on lower theft losses, higher markups and less damaged product. In the first half of fiscal 2026 (through July 31, 2026), net income was $994 million versus $803 million a year earlier (up 24%) on 4.3% higher sales, and our owner-earnings measure was roughly 20% higher. Reported operating cash flow was actually lower in that half ($1,497 million versus $1,815 million) because inventory and prepaid expenses absorbed cash; we treat that as timing, not weaker earnings. We could not identify the specific reason prepaid expenses rose by $169 million in that half. Growth-path check. Cash generation before lenders grew 29% in fiscal 2025. The base case assumes 0% for its first year, that is, it holds at the fiscal 2025 level of $8.49, which is about 12% above the $7.54 anchor. We consider that level earned rather than hoped for, because six straight quarters (four in fiscal 2025 and two in fiscal 2026) show the recovery, and no further improvement is credited. Base case (about $137.57 per share). The business is worth about $33.8 billion ($152.64 per share) before lenders. It owes about $3.3 billion net ($15.08 per share), leaving $137.57. Growth credited is only the proven, self-funded opening of stores: 589 opened against 290 closed in 2025, a net gain of about 1.4%, and about 450 openings planned for 2026. We credit 1.4% a year for years 2 to 5, 1.0% for years 6 to 8, 0.5% for years 9 and 10, then nothing, with the stores' earnings simply continuing flat afterwards (about 57% of the base value sits after year 10, and rests on the existing store base continuing to earn at the year-10 level). We left out share buybacks (share count has been flat near 220 million since 2023), a return to pre-2020 profit margins, the pOpshelf format, Mexico (only about 10 stores planned), and any price inflation. Bear case (about $80.54 per share). The fiscal 2023 trough returns and stays: $6.14 per share, eroding 1% a year through year 10 as weak stores close (290 closures in 2025, and the filing states that persistent theft at certain stores has historically contributed to closures), then flat. The business is worth about $21.2 billion ($95.62 per share), it owes $15.08 per share, and the difference is $80.54. Even here, cash before lenders (about $1.3 billion a year) is more than four times the roughly $290 million of annual interest, so the debt is comfortably carried. Bull case (about $166.47 per share). Recent gains keep going and the company's own levers work: starting at $9.50 per share (12% above fiscal 2025, still below the roughly 20% gain in the first half of fiscal 2026), growing 2.5% a year for years 2 to 5 (store growth plus the ongoing remodel programs, about 2,000 full and 2,250 partial remodels planned for 2026) and 1.5% for years 6 to 10, then flat. The business is worth about $40.2 billion ($181.54 per share); after $15.08 of net debt, $166.47. Debt. Roughly $4.6 billion is owed, almost all in fixed-rate senior notes averaging a coupon of about 4.6% (3.5% to 5.5%). Maturities are modest and well spaced: about $1.0 billion in 2028 (4.125% due May and 5.2% due July), $1.0 billion in April 2030, and the remainder from 2032 to 2052. Because the coupons are below the 6% we use, we reduced the debt figure by about $0.3 billion. We credited $1.0 billion of the $1.59 billion of cash at July 31, 2026, leaving the rest as operating cash. Store rent and other lease costs already run through operating cash flow, so we did not subtract lease liabilities. The company redeemed $1.65 billion of notes in 2025 with cash on hand. What we tested. The thesis leans on the recovery being real. The filing shows the margin gain came mainly from lower theft losses and higher markups (partly offset by higher LIFO inventory charges), and damaged goods remain elevated, so a relapse to fiscal 2023 economics is the main risk and is what the bear case prices. The 2025 rebound in cash flow was flattered by working capital, which is why we stripped it out. Change since our last view. Our earlier estimates were about $67, $126 and $184 for the bear, base and bull cases. We now show about $81, $138 and $166. The range is narrower and the middle higher for two reasons. First, the approach now values the business before its lenders at a uniform 6% required return and then subtracts the debt. Second, the filings since then show the recovery in margins and earnings continuing. What would make this wrong. Renewed theft and markdown pressure, a weaker lower-income consumer, or wage inflation that outruns pricing would push results toward the bear case. Higher-than-expected sustained margins would move results toward the bull case. Margin-of-safety price. The margin-of-safety price is about $82, roughly 40% below the base case and close to the bear case. That is wider than for a steady compounder because cash generation halved between fiscal 2022 and fiscal 2023, which shows the earnings stream is less predictable than the store count suggests.

Chart analysis
From roughly 2019 into 2022 the shares were in a strong, well-defined uptrend, peaking around 2022 in the mid-$200s. A chartist would treat that 2022 high as the major long-term resistance level. From there the stock broke down through its long-term moving averages and fell in a steep, multi-year decline through 2023 and 2024, losing roughly two thirds of its value on a series of gap-down sessions that followed profit-outlook cuts. The late-2024 low, in the area of roughly $65 to $70, is the key support level. Since that low the shares have been building a base and making higher lows, which a chartist would read as an early-stage bottoming and recovery pattern rather than a confirmed new uptrend. The lower highs of the earlier decline and the prior breakdown zone overhead are the resistance to watch. A sustained close above the declining longer-term moving average, on rising volume, would be needed to call the multi-year downtrend over, while a break back below the late-2024 low would invalidate the base. These levels are approximate and drawn from the historical range, not from a current quote.
