Target sells general merchandise, food and household goods through 1,995 U.S. stores (about 250 million square feet of store space, up 0.9% in FY2025) and uses those stores to fulfil most online orders. Its fiscal year ends in late January or early February (FY2025 ended January 31, 2026). Revenue was $104.8B in FY2025, down from $109.1B in FY2022. HOW WE MEASURE EARNINGS. We count the cash the business produces for its owners: operating cash flow, less the swing in inventory, payables and other working capital, less stock-based compensation, less capital spending except the slice that the long-run spending-to-sales ratio ties to sales growth (almost none, because sales have been flat or falling). To value the whole business before its lenders, we add back cash interest ($629M in FY2025). That gives business cash flow per share of $8.57 (FY2016), $6.97, $5.40, $7.12, $12.10 (FY2020), $14.54, $2.73 (FY2022), $6.76, $10.05 and $7.87 (FY2025). The working-capital lines tie to reported operating cash flow to within about 1% in each year from FY2017 to FY2025. EARNINGS LEVEL. We use the median of eight years, FY2016 to FY2019 and FY2022 to FY2025: $7.05 per share. We leave out FY2020 and FY2021, when pandemic demand pulled purchases forward (sales jumped from $78.1B to $106.0B in two years). We keep FY2022, when Target was stuck with excess inventory and spent $5.5B on capital projects, because a retailer's normal cycle includes a year like that. Growth check: business cash flow per share fell 21.7% in FY2025 ($7.87 versus $10.05). Our base case assumes 0% growth in year 1 from a $7.05 starting point, which is below the FY2025 figure, so it does not assume a rebound. A one-time $994M tariff refund that Target reported in its August 2026 earnings release is not in our level. DEBT. At August 1, 2026 Target owed $15.36B including finance leases and held $5.41B of cash; we treat $1.0B as needed to run the stores, so net debt is $10.95B. Most of the debt costs well under 6% (for example $4.9B at an average 2.9% due 2026 to 2030, and $4.3B at 3.8% to 3.9% due 2041 to 2052), which is worth about $1.5B to shareholders, so we deduct $9.45B, or $20.69 per share, on 456.6M diluted shares. Operating leases are already charged in operating cash flow and are not deducted again. Maturities are spread over decades and we see no covenant pressure. BASE CASE, $96.81 per share. Business cash flow stays at $7.05 per share indefinitely, with no growth credited. Support: it has been positive in every one of the last ten years, and sales have stayed between $104.8B and $109.1B in each of the last four years. The business is worth $117.50 per share (about $53.7B), it owes $20.69, leaving $96.81. We do not credit a sales recovery: in the first half of FY2026 sales rose 6.0% ($52.0B versus $49.1B), and Target reported second-quarter comparable sales up 3.8% with traffic up 3.6%, but that is two quarters, and second-quarter operating income was inflated by the tariff refund. BEAR CASE, $42.81 per share. Two named pressures. First, Target expects roughly $5B of capital spending in 2026 against $3.7B in FY2025; if that level persists without matching sales growth, business cash flow drops about $2.79 per share, from $7.87 to $5.08. Second, revenue has fallen three years running (from $109.1B in FY2022 to $104.8B in FY2025) and the gross margin rate slipped to 27.9% from 28.2% in FY2025, so we let cash flow shrink 2% a year indefinitely. The business is worth $63.50 per share (about $29.0B), it owes $20.69, leaving $42.81. Even then, business cash flow of roughly $2.3B covers the $0.6B interest bill about 3.7 times. BULL CASE, $139.89 per share. Business cash flow of $9.00 per share (between FY2016's $8.57 and FY2024's $10.05) growing 1% a year for ten years, then flat. The growth rests on something Target has demonstrably done: store space grew 0.9% in FY2025 and management plans about 30 new stores in 2026, funded from its own cash. The business is worth $160.58 per share (about $73.3B), it owes $20.69, leaving $139.89. WHAT WE LEFT OUT. Margin expansion, a sustained comparable-sales rebound and management's improved FY2026 outlook are not credited in any case because they have not yet been shown over a full year. Buybacks are not credited either: shares fell from 582.5M in FY2016 to 455.6M in FY2025, but spending cash on buybacks does not add value unless the price is below worth. WHAT COULD MAKE THIS WRONG. If $5B a year of capital spending is the new normal and sales stay flat, even our base case is too high. If the first-half sales recovery holds for a full year with better margins, our base case is too low. CHANGE SINCE OUR LAST VIEW (August 2026: $42 / $102 / $146). The new $43 / $97 / $140 is close, but built differently: a flat 6% discount rate, business cash flow before interest with debt deducted separately, and an eight-year median that removes the pandemic years. It is not a reaction to new bad news. MARGIN-OF-SAFETY PRICE, $58 per share, about 40% below the base value. The wide cushion reflects that the gap between the bear and bull cases is large, sales have declined three years in a row, spending on discretionary goods is cyclical, and heavy capital spending is planned.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see a stock that peaked in 2021 (above $250) and has since spent years in a long, choppy downtrend with lower highs, including a sharp drop in 2022 when excess inventory hit margins and another slide in 2025 as sales fell and tariff worries mounted. Since 2023 the shares have mostly traded in a wide range of roughly $85 to $185, with the lower end acting as repeated support and the $140 to $180 area as resistance. Target's own five-year shareholder-return chart in its annual report shows it lagging the broad market and its retail peers over that stretch. Moves have been violent around quarterly earnings, with large gaps up and down. A break above the range highs on rising volume would be read as the end of the downtrend; a close below the lows would be read as a breakdown. Figures are from memory of public price history and the filings, not a live quote.
