ENERGY FUELS INC (UUUU) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Cash from operations after stock compensation and upkeep spending positive for several consecutive quarters, either because uranium contract deliveries plus rare earth sales cover the annual cash burn or because the Phase 2 rare earth circuit is financed and sells under signed contracts.
Energy Fuels mines and mills uranium in the western United States. Its White Mesa Mill in Utah is the only conventional uranium mill operating in the country. It also produces vanadium, has begun separating rare earth oxides (neodymium-praseodymium, or NdPr) at the mill, and sold the last of its Kwale mineral sands product in Kenya in 2025. We value only what the business has demonstrably earned and what is already contractually locked in. What the numbers show. On our owner-earnings measure (cash from operations, less working-capital swings, less stock compensation, less upkeep capital spending), the company has been negative in every year we can measure. Per share the figures were about -$0.07 (2018), -$0.28 (2019), -$0.22 (2020), -$0.21 (2021), -$0.31 (2022), -$0.19 (2023), -$0.41 (2024) and -$0.50 (2025). Cash from operations was -$89.5 million in 2025 on revenue of $65.9 million. Revenue was $78.1 million in 2024 and $37.9 million in 2023. The 2023 accounting profit of about $100 million came from a tax benefit, not from operations, so we do not treat it as earning power. The first half of 2026 improved: revenue was $60.9 million (against $21.1 million a year earlier) and operating cash flow was -$17.8 million (against -$44.8 million). But it was still negative after roughly $7 million of stock compensation, so the business is not yet earning a surplus. What is locked in. As of December 31, 2025, Energy Fuels has six long-term uranium contracts with U.S. utilities. They call for a minimum of 3.21 million pounds, a base of 3.71 million and a maximum of 5.29 million pounds, delivered from 2026 to 2032, with 2027 and 2028 the heaviest years at about 0.89 million pounds each. In 2025 the company realized about $71 per pound on contract sales and $77 on spot sales. Its finished inventory cost about $43 per pound, and management expects mining-plus-milling costs of $23 to $30 per pound on the high-grade Pinyon Plain ore now being processed. Those figures imply roughly $30 to $40 of margin per pound. On about 0.9 million pounds a year, that is roughly $30 million a year of gross margin. That is real, but it is well short of the $90 million-plus annual cash burn of 2025 and of the $30 million-plus burn implied by the first half of 2026. The contract prices themselves are not stated in the filing, so we used the 2025 realized price as a guide. Why every case is worth about zero. The rest of the story rests on things that have not yet happened: uranium price increases, new term contracts, the Phase 2 rare earth circuit (a feasibility study only, with completion targeted for late 2028 or early 2029 and still subject to licensing, financing and feedstock), heavy rare earth separation, and the Donald project. We left these out. None is contracted, and the rare earth sales are described as intentions to secure contracts. The mill's conventional uranium run is also expected to stop after the second quarter of 2026 until about the first quarter of 2027, which argues against a near-term step-up. Growth credited: none. What the evidence supports is a business whose contracted margin is smaller than its cost base. Bear case: the contracts run off at minimum volumes, the mill idles between runs, and the rare earth and expansion spending yields nothing. That produces continued losses and a value of $0 per share. Base case: the base contract volumes deliver at about $30 to $40 per pound of margin, and the business roughly breaks even at the contract level but does not clear its overhead, stock compensation and upkeep spending. That is also $0. Bull case: maximum contract volumes and low Pinyon Plain costs are delivered on schedule and lift margin to around $45 million a year. That still does not cover the burn we can document, so it is $0 as well. Our figures are not a claim that the company is worthless. They say that nothing we can name and evidence yet produces owner earnings for shareholders. Balance sheet. The company raised $700 million of 0.75% convertible notes due 2031 in October 2025 and about $272 million through share sales in 2025. That cash funds the current losses. Under our approach we do not add cash to the value or subtract debt. The stock could still have a large asset backing that our earnings-based measure does not capture. The share count rose from 160 million in 2023 to 225 million in 2025 and 249 million by mid-2026, which dilutes existing holders. What would make this wrong: uranium contract prices materially above the $71 per pound realized in 2025, faster ramp-up and profitable sales of separated rare earth oxides, or a sustained fall in overhead. Any of these would show up in owner earnings turning positive for several quarters, which we would want to see before assigning value.
