Twist Bioscience Corp (TWST) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings after stock compensation and capital spending positive for at least two consecutive fiscal years.
Twist Bioscience makes synthetic DNA. Its products are synthetic genes and related DNA tools, next-generation sequencing (NGS) preparation tools (55% of fiscal 2025 revenue), and antibody discovery services for drug developers. Products are made in Wilsonville, Oregon and South San Francisco, California. Revenue grew 20% to $376.6 million in fiscal 2025 (year ended September 30) from $313.0 million, and $245.1 million the year before that. Growth has not yet produced profit that belongs to shareholders. Fiscal 2025 gross margin improved to 50.7% from 42.6%, and the operating loss narrowed to $136.3 million from $220.8 million. The net loss of $77.7 million was flattered by a $48.8 million gain on the sale of the DNA data storage business to Atlas Data Storage. Cash used in operations was $47.6 million. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, less swings in working capital, less stock-based compensation, less the capital spending needed just to maintain the business. Stock compensation is a real cost: it rose from $30.3 million in fiscal 2023 to $64.5 million in fiscal 2025, and it alone exceeds the whole cash burn. On this basis owner earnings were about negative $123 million in fiscal 2025 (negative $2.06 per share) and negative $131 million in fiscal 2024 (negative $2.26 per share). The most recent year improved about 9% per share from the year before, but it is still deeply negative. We could compare only these two years cleanly on our method, so there is no positive earnings level to anchor on. All three cases are valued at $0 per share. We give credit only for earnings the business has already shown or growth that is locked in. Twist has shown neither positive owner earnings in any year we could examine, nor any contract that guarantees a path to them. Continued revenue growth, rising gross margin and fixed manufacturing costs spread over more volume are real trends, and they are why the losses are shrinking, but reaching profit would still require operating costs to stay flat while sales keep growing and stock compensation to fall sharply. That is a turnaround that has not yet happened, so it is left out of every case rather than included at a discount. In the bear case the losses continue and the company must raise money or dilute holders further. In the base and bull cases nothing evidenced turns the current negative earnings positive. This is not a claim that the business is worthless in a broader sense. It is a claim that we cannot support a positive value from evidence already in hand. The company reported $183.0 million of cash and $49.4 million of short-term investments at September 30, 2025, and states these are sufficient to fund operations for at least the next year. Our method does not count balance-sheet cash on top of owner earnings, and at the current burn rate that cash is being spent rather than kept. Debt is small: the only financing item of note is a $15.0 million liability related to the sale of future revenue. What would make this wrong: if operating costs stay roughly flat while revenue keeps growing about 20% a year, the loss could close within a few years, and the case would then be worth far more than zero. The estimate would warrant reassessment once owner earnings turn positive and stay there. This analysis is based on the fiscal 2025 annual report; we did not use the later quarterly report.
