Business condition attached to the margin of safety Full-year fiscal 2026 results (ending January 2027) confirm positive owner earnings, meaning operating cash flow after removing working-capital swings, stock compensation and store capital spending is above zero, with second-half comparable sales still growing.
Tilly's is a mall and shopping-center specialty retailer of casual apparel, footwear and accessories for teens and young adults, built around an active, outdoor and social lifestyle. It ended fiscal 2025 (year ended January 31, 2026) with 223 stores in 33 states, 90 of them in California, plus a website that produced $122.5 million, or 22.1%, of $553.6 million in sales. All stores are leased. The company has no borrowings under its $65 million credit facility. We value it on owner earnings: operating cash flow after removing one-off swings in inventory, payables and other working capital, then subtracting stock-based compensation and the store investment needed to stay in business. What the record shows. Owner earnings were positive every year from fiscal 2016 through 2022, ranging from about $0.20 to $1.11 per share (excluding fiscal 2021, a post-pandemic demand surge worth $2.13 per share that we treat as non-repeatable). They then turned negative: about -$1.04 per share in fiscal 2023, -$1.50 in fiscal 2024 and -$0.50 in fiscal 2025. Sales fell from $776 million in fiscal 2021 to $554 million, and the company closed 17 net stores in fiscal 2025 alone. Fiscal 2025 operating cash flow was a positive $4.1 million, but only because inventory reduction and higher payables released about $12.5 million of working capital. Stripping that out, the business still consumed cash. Across fiscal 2016 to 2025, excluding the pandemic-distorted years 2020 and 2021, the median is roughly $0.34 per share, which is the normal level we use for the base case. What is improving. In fiscal 2025 comparable sales rose 0.3% after falling 8.0% and 10.6% in the prior two years, gross margin widened 340 basis points to 29.7% on higher initial markups and fewer markdowns, and selling and administrative costs fell $15.7 million. The quarterly report filed September 3, 2026 shows the first half of fiscal 2026 sales of $288.2 million versus $258.9 million a year earlier, net income of $0.4 million versus a $19.0 million loss, and operating cash flow of $18.5 million versus $5.9 million. That half combined a loss of about $8.0 million in the first quarter with a profit of $8.4 million in the second, so the turnaround is real but not yet steady. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings improved by about $1.01 per share in fiscal 2025 (from -$1.50 to -$0.50). The base case assumes a smaller improvement of about $0.65 in fiscal 2026, to roughly +$0.15 per share, because the first half of fiscal 2026 already shows earnings turning positive. After that we credit only a return to the historical normal level, not growth beyond it. Base case, $3.3 per share. Owner earnings of $0.15 in fiscal 2026 and $0.30 in fiscal 2027, then the $0.34 normal level held through year ten. Beyond that we let earnings fade to zero over fifteen years, because the store base is shrinking and we can point to no named source of new earnings. We do not credit store growth, new products or a lasting sales rebound. The company's four-decade record and unlevered balance sheet support the earning power continuing for some time, but nothing in the filings supports it continuing indefinitely. Bear case, $0.1 per share. Second-half seasonality keeps fiscal 2026 owner earnings at about -$0.25, fiscal 2027 breaks even, and earnings then stay near $0.10 before fading to zero by year ten as mall traffic and store counts keep shrinking. The risk is real: the annual report states that the company may need to borrow under its credit facility if comparable sales turn negative for an extended period, and every store is on a fixed-cost lease. It lost money at the operating level for three straight years. Bull case, $7.6 per share. Owner earnings return to the roughly $0.80 per share earned in fiscal 2017 through 2019 on similar sales of $577 million to $619 million, reached by fiscal 2028 after $0.35 in fiscal 2026 and $0.60 in fiscal 2027, held through year ten, then faded over fifteen years. The margin gains and cost cuts already visible in fiscal 2025 and the first half of fiscal 2026 make this a defensible upside, not a windfall. What would make this wrong. The $46.3 million of cash held at year-end and the absence of debt are not added to these values, which rest only on earnings. If the first-half improvement was driven by timing rather than better underlying sales and margins, the base case is too high. If sales keep growing and store closures stop, earnings could return faster than the base case assumes. We could not tie every working-capital line to a single filing tag, so the historical owner-earnings series relies on the cash flow statements as presented, with lease-liability changes left inside operating results.
