Boot Barn is the largest western and work footwear, apparel and accessories chain in the United States: 539 stores in 49 states at the end of fiscal 2026 (March 2026), up from 459 a year earlier and 400 the year before, plus a website and app that account for roughly 10% of sales. Fiscal 2026 sales were $2.254 billion, up 17.9%, with same-store sales up 7.2% after +5.5% the year before. The one down year in recent history was fiscal 2024, when same-store sales fell 6.2%. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove swings in working capital (mainly inventory build-up), and deduct stock compensation and the part of store and equipment spending needed to keep the existing business running. Rent stays in as a real cost. On this basis owner earnings per share were about $1.46 (fiscal 2019), $1.40, $2.11, $6.63 (fiscal 2022, a pandemic-boom year), $3.85, $3.65, $4.06 and $6.53 (fiscal 2026). We used about $4.00 per share as the normal level, roughly the median of fiscal 2022 to 2026, rather than the latest year, because fiscal 2022 and 2026 are the high points and because removing inventory growth flatters a chain that adds about 10 to 15% more stores every year; those stores really do need inventory. Fiscal 2026 owner earnings grew about 61% from fiscal 2025 ($4.06 to $6.53), largely because operating cash flow rebounded and net income rose to $225.9 million. We do not extrapolate that: our first-year growth is 6%, well below the trailing figure, and we found no dated fact that supports faster. Base case, about $88 per share. Growth credited: the store rollout, which the company has run for many years through the pandemic and through the 2024 sales dip, funded from its own cash (the revolving credit line is undrawn and the company held $141.0 million of cash at March 2026). It added 59 and 80 net stores in the last two years, and we credit only 6% earnings growth in year one, tapering evenly to zero by year ten, below the pace already shown. After year ten we hold the earnings flat rather than growing them, because a large, brand-leading store base with leases in place is a structural feature that keeps producing cash, but nothing we can name supports further growth. Left out: management's stated belief that the U.S. can support about 1,200 stores (a target, not something achieved), further same-store sales gains, e-commerce share gains and margin expansion. Bear case, about $28 per share. Owner earnings fall to about $3.00 (roughly 18% below fiscal 2024's $3.65 trough) if another year like fiscal 2024, when same-store sales fell 6.2%, recurs and openings only cover their own inventory needs. There is no growth, and after ten years the earnings fade to zero over a further ten because no named driver replaces aging stores' cash flow. The company has no borrowings, so leverage does not drive this case, but store leases are a fixed cost that magnifies a sales decline. The credit line matures July 11, 2027 and will need to be renewed. Bull case, about $156 per share. The store rollout continues at roughly the pace of the last three years (194 net new stores), so earnings growth starts at 10% and tapers evenly to zero over fifteen years, from a starting level of $5.00, between the normal level and the fiscal 2026 result, since 80 stores opened in fiscal 2026 have not yet contributed a full year. It then stays flat. What we could not fully reconcile: cash flow in recent years has swung with inventory purchases (a $148 million build in fiscal 2025 and $97 million in fiscal 2026). We treated those as growth-related working capital, which lifts owner earnings above simple cash flow after capital spending ($126 million, or about $4.10 per share in fiscal 2026); this is why we used a mid-range normal level, not the latest year. The company also reports capital spending gross of landlord contributions; it expects fiscal 2027 net spending of $125 to $130 million after $47.6 million of landlord allowances. What would make this wrong: a multi-year decline in same-store sales beyond fiscal 2024's, store openings that earn less than the 3-year payback the company targets, or higher inventory requirements per store. The margin-of-safety price is about $50 per share, roughly 43% below the base value and well above the bear value, reflecting a stable but consumer-sensitive, lease-heavy retailer whose growth is still funded by inventory and store spending.
