Sweetgreen, Inc. (SG) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityAverage Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings (operating cash flow less stock compensation and the capital spending needed to keep restaurants running) positive for at least two consecutive years without relying on new-restaurant growth spending being cut to zero.
Sweetgreen operates fast-casual salad and bowl restaurants in U.S. cities, with a growing digital ordering business and its Infinite Kitchen robotic make-line technology. Revenue grew from $470M in fiscal 2022 to $584M in 2023 and $677M in 2024, then stalled at $679M in 2025. What the business actually earns for its owners. We measure owner earnings as cash from operations, less the cash effect of working-capital swings, less stock-based compensation (a real cost paid in shares), less the part of capital spending needed to keep existing restaurants running (spending on new restaurants is treated as growth spending). On that basis Sweetgreen has lost money for owners in every year we can measure: about $(1.77) per share in 2022, $(0.90) in 2023, $(0.59) in 2024 and $(1.41) in 2025. Operating cash flow improved from $(43)M to a positive $43M in 2024 but fell back to $(13)M in 2025, and in 2025 revenue growth stopped while spending on restaurants rose to $106M. Even in the best year, 2024, cash from operations of $43M did not cover $39M of stock compensation plus roughly $70M of upkeep-level capital spending. We left out fiscal 2021 (the IPO year, distorted by one-time items) and did not adjust for the large non-cash charges (depreciation and asset impairments), which are correctly added back in cash flow; the cost of restaurants wearing out shows up instead in the capital-spending deduction. Base case: $0 per share. We only credit value from drivers that are contracted or already proven. Sweetgreen has a record of opening restaurants, but it has done so while losing money, not from self-funded profits, so that growth is not credited. Margin improvement from Infinite Kitchen automation, menu changes or a turnaround is a management aim, not an established result, so it is also not credited. With no evidenced source of positive owner earnings, the business is worth $0 on this method. Reported net losses ($134M in 2025) and the widening gap between spending and cash generated support that reading. Bear case: $0 per share. Cash fell from $214.8M to $89.2M during 2025, and the company had $459.8M of operating lease commitments, about $63.5M due in 2026, and no debt. The 2026 sale of Spyce to Wonder brought $100M in cash plus preferred shares of Wonder, and management says cash is sufficient for at least twelve months. If losses continued, the company would need new financing, likely dilutive to existing shareholders. We do not model a value below zero because shareholders are not liable for the company's obligations, and we do not add balance-sheet cash on top of a case value, so the case is $0. Bull case: $0 per share. The company's own levers are same-store sales recovery and Infinite Kitchen deployment. Testing generously: if new-restaurant spending stopped, capital spending might fall toward the roughly $70M seen in 2023 and 2024, but that would still leave owner earnings negative after stock compensation of $36M to $50M a year, given cash from operations of $43M at best. Nothing named and already evidenced turns owner earnings positive, so even the bull case stays at $0. What would make this wrong: a sustained recovery in restaurant-level profitability that produces positive cash from operations well above stock compensation plus upkeep spending; two or three years of that would change our view. We did not reconcile every non-cash item in the cash flow statement line by line; working-capital and lease lines were treated as noted, and the results are directionally clear. The margin-of-safety price is $0 today, and a higher figure would depend on the business showing positive owner earnings for consecutive years.
