Nutanix sells hybrid multicloud software (Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure, Files, Unified Storage and related products) that lets companies run their applications on standard servers from partners such as Dell, HPE, Lenovo and Cisco, and on public clouds. Revenue is now almost entirely subscription: $2.85 billion in the fiscal year ended July 2026, up from $2.54 billion a year earlier and $1.39 billion in fiscal 2021. HOW WE MEASURE EARNINGS. We start with operating cash flow, then subtract three things: the cash that comes from customers paying in advance (growth in deferred revenue and other working-capital swings), stock-based compensation (about $358 million a year, treated as a real cost), and the part of capital spending needed just to stand still. On that basis the company lost money every year from fiscal 2017 to fiscal 2023 (as much as $4.48 per share in fiscal 2020), turned positive in fiscal 2024 ($0.38 per share), and earned $0.91 in fiscal 2025 and $1.14 in fiscal 2026. Reported cash flow from operations ($917 million in fiscal 2026) looks far stronger; the gap is mostly customers prepaying multi-year subscriptions and stock compensation, both of which we deliberately strip out. Reported net income of about $1.5 billion in fiscal 2026 appears to include a large non-cash item and was not used. We could not fully reconcile it to cash flow from the tagged data, so the earnings figure rests on cash flow only. BASE EARNINGS LEVEL. Because the business only became profitable on this basis in fiscal 2024, earlier years describe a different, loss-making company. We anchor on roughly $1.00 per share, in line with fiscal 2025-2026 rather than the latest year alone. Fiscal 2026 earnings grew about 25% per share; we assume year one grows less than that. BASE CASE ($16.50 per share). Earnings grow about 10%, 8%, 6%, 4% and 2% over the next five years to about $1.34, then hold flat through year 20 and fade to zero by year 30. Growth credited is limited to what is secured: contracted remaining performance obligations rose 28% to $3.44 billion (from $2.69 billion), with about 49% due to be recognized within 12 months, and subscriptions have a multi-year record of renewal. We give no credit for new products, market share gains or margin expansion. Growth stops after five years because nothing we can evidence supports more, and the flat years reflect the renewal base, not expansion. BEAR CASE ($5.50). Earnings slip back to about $0.65 per share (the fiscal 2024-2025 range), do not grow for eight years, and then decline to zero over roughly twelve years as subscription renewals erode. The company carries about $1.2 billion of low-coupon convertible notes (2027 and 2029 maturities) and its share count has risen about 40% since fiscal 2021 through stock compensation, which raises the cost of any earnings slip; the notes are small relative to earnings, so debt is not the main risk. BULL CASE ($25). Earnings start at fiscal 2026's $1.14 and grow 20%, 15%, 12%, 10% and 8% (about $2.10 by year five), which is what happens if the $3.44 billion contracted backlog converts on its current schedule and renewals keep pace; the level then holds through year 20 before fading. WHAT COULD MAKE THIS WRONG. Stock compensation remains the largest cost, and if it were to fall, earnings would be higher than we show. Conversely, the company only recently became profitable on our basis, and a sharp deceleration in renewals or a hardware partner change would hit the bear case. Buybacks ($482 million in fiscal 2026) have not offset dilution enough to reduce the share count. MARGIN-OF-SAFETY PRICE. The margin-of-safety price is about $9.50, roughly 40% below the base case and under twice the bear case, reflecting a short profitability record and dependence on subscription renewals.
