Generac makes backup and prime power equipment: home standby generators sold through dealers and retailers, portable generators, commercial and industrial generators (including large megawatt diesel units newly aimed at data centers), and a smaller, loss-prone energy technology line (PWRcell solar storage, EV charging and grid services). Demand is driven by power outages, the installed base of homes with standby units, and the build-out of critical infrastructure. How we measured earnings. We start from cash generated by operations, remove the swing in working capital (inventory, receivables, payables and accruals), deduct stock compensation as a real cost, and deduct maintenance-type capital spending. Working capital matters a great deal here: in 2021 and 2022 Generac built roughly $790 million of inventory, and in 2023 and 2024 it released a large part of it, so reported operating cash flow lurched from $58 million (2022) to $741 million (2024). Stripping those swings gives owner earnings per share of about $2.53 (2016), $3.27, $4.51, $4.64, $6.05, $8.37 (2021), $6.39, $3.69, $5.73 and $3.90 (2025). Roughly $195 million a year of depreciation and amortization, including about $100 million of amortization of acquired intangibles, is non-cash and already excluded from the cost side; because those acquired assets are decaying, we do not let the growth path rise to offset them. Capital spending has risen to $170 million in 2025; because revenue fell in 2025 we treated all of it as maintenance, which is conservative. Anchor. We use the median of 2018 to 2025, leaving out 2021, when pandemic-era home demand and outages produced an unusually high $8.37. That gives about $4.64 per share, roughly $275 million a year. Recent years (3.69, 5.73, 3.90) bracket that level. Trailing-year results did not set the level. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings per share fell about 32% in 2025 (from $5.73 to $3.90). The base case starts at the 2025 level and returns to the $4.64 anchor over about three years. That is a return to a level reached in 2018-2020 and again in 2024, not growth; the 2025 dip reflects lower operating earnings and a non-repeat of 2024's working-capital release, as the 10-K states. No growth from data centers, share gains, or energy technology is credited, because the filing shows no disclosed backlog or signed contracts we can quantify for the new large-generator line. Bear case (about $27 per share). Owner earnings settle near $2.90 per share, near the 2016-2017 level, for ten years and then fade to zero over another ten. Named risks: residential demand depends on outages and weather, sales fell in both 2023 and 2025, capital spending is climbing faster than earnings, the company still carries a large debt load, and the solar and storage products are the subject of a consumer class-action settlement ($15 million reserved) and a pending arbitration with a bankrupt dealer. Generac has also spent money on acquisitions and minority stakes that have not paid back. Base case (about $54 per share). Owner earnings of about $4.64 for 15 years, then fading to zero over 15 more. The evidence is a business that has produced $2.5 to $8.4 of owner earnings per share every year for a decade, a strong home standby brand and dealer network, and an equipment category that customers purchase because outages are costly. After year 15 nothing named and evidenced supports continued earnings beyond a gradual fade as products age. Bull case (about $76 per share). Owner earnings of about $6.40 (the 2022 level), sustained for 15 years and then faded. This requires the company's own levers to work: the new large megawatt generators capture some data-center demand using capacity Generac is already spending on, and outage frequency stays elevated. We credit no growth beyond that level. What would make this wrong. The upside is wrong if data-center demand does not materialize; the downside is wrong if the home standby installed base proves as recession-proof as its 2016-2025 record suggests. The 10-K discloses a securities class action that was dismissed in February 2025 and re-filed as an amended complaint; a loss there is not in our figures. We could not fully reconcile the 2025 cash flow to the reported earnings line-by-line beyond the working-capital items listed; the remaining differences are non-cash items such as deferred taxes and changes in the fair value of investments, which are left in owner earnings. Shares appear worth about $54 in the central case, with a range of roughly $27 to $76. Because sales are weather- and cycle-exposed and profits have fallen back in two of the last three years, the margin-of-safety price is set close to the bear value, at about $30.
