Caterpillar makes construction, mining and energy equipment (Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Power & Energy), earns a recurring stream from parts and services on its installed base, and runs a finance arm (Cat Financial) that lends to customers and dealers. Sales and revenues were $67.6 billion in 2025. How we measured earnings. We start with operating cash flow, remove the swings in receivables, inventory, payables and customer advances, deduct stock compensation ($242 million in 2025), and deduct the capital spending needed just to stay in business. Capital spending includes both factory investment and equipment leased to customers ($4.3 billion in 2025, of which only $148 million was treated as growth spending because sales rose only 4 percent). That gives 2025 owner earnings of $7.2 billion ($15.32 per share), versus $9.3 billion in 2024 and $10.2 billion in 2023. Non-cash charges such as the goodwill write-downs in 2016 and 2022 are added back; Caterpillar's remaining intangible assets are only $241 million, so no material wasting-asset issue arises. We do not credit the roughly $0.7 billion a year received from selling used leased equipment, which is conservative. We value the manufacturing and services business before its lenders, so we add back the interest on that business's own debt (about $0.5 billion a year) and subtract that debt afterward. Cat Financial's borrowings (about $28 billion) fund its loans and are treated as a cost of lending, so they are not subtracted, and the $3.8 billion retiree-benefit liability is not subtracted because those payments already run through operating cash flow. Normal earning level. Caterpillar is cyclical. Business cash flow, before the manufacturing debt's interest, was about $2.2 billion in the 2016 downturn and $4.1 billion in 2020, against $10.7 billion in 2023. We use 2018 to 2025, which holds the 2019 peak, the 2020 trough and the 2021 to 2025 recovery, and we leave out 2016 and 2017, when reported profit was $(59) million and $759 million. The median for that window is $6.9 billion a year, or $14.9 per share on today's roughly 462 million shares (the stored per-share median, measured on the larger share counts of earlier years, is $12.2). Growth check. Business cash flow fell 21 percent in 2025, from $9.8 billion to $7.7 billion, as tariffs and lower pricing outweighed higher volume: the annual report shows manufacturing costs $2.1 billion worse (largely tariffs) and price realization $817 million unfavorable, against a $1.2 billion gain from volume, and operating margin fell to 16.5 percent from 20.2 percent. Our base case starts 2026 at $7.0 billion, about 9 percent below 2025, which is a smaller decline than the trailing 21 percent, so we name the dated reasons. Order backlog was $51.2 billion at December 31, 2025 (up from $30.0 billion a year earlier), of which $31.9 billion is scheduled to ship in 2026; and the June 2026 quarterly report shows first-half 2026 sales of $38.0 billion (up 23 percent) and operating cash flow of $6.2 billion versus $4.4 billion. As a cross-check, 2025 owner earnings less the extra 2026 tariff cost ($0.8 billion before tax, about $0.6 billion after) also lands near $7.1 billion. Base case: $7.0 billion in 2026, growing 3 percent a year through 2032 and 2 percent through 2035 (to $8.9 billion), then held flat. Growth credited is the demonstrated pace: sales grew 3.1 percent a year from 2018 to 2025 and 3.7 percent a year from 2015 to 2025, through two downturns, funded from Caterpillar's own cash. Left out: management's 5 to 7 percent growth target, data-center power demand, a China recovery, share gains and price increases (2025 pricing was unfavorable). The flat continuation after 2035 rests on the installed base, dealer network and parts and service stream, and on the fact that business cash flow stayed positive in every year from 2016 to 2025, including two severe downturns. The business is worth about $140.5 billion, it owes about $9.3 billion net, leaving about $131.2 billion, or $283.58 per share. More than half of that value lies beyond 2035, so it is sensitive to that persistence assumption. Bear case: the $51 billion backlog holds 2026 near $6.5 billion, then a downturn like 2016 and 2020 (sales fell 18 percent and 22 percent in those years) cuts business cash flow to $4.5 billion in 2027 and $3.0 billion in 2028, with tariffs (which management says could run about 20 percent above the $2.6 billion planned for 2026 if not mitigated) keeping the recovery incomplete: $3.8 billion, $4.2 billion, then $4.5 billion flat, about a third below the normal level. Cat Financial credit losses are a further risk in a downturn but are not separately modeled. Business value is about $74.8 billion, net debt $9.3 billion, leaving about $65.5 billion, or $141.68 per share. Even at $3.0 billion the business covers its roughly $0.5 billion of interest about six times. Bull case: backlog converts on schedule and volume returns to the 2023 to 2024 level ($10.7 billion and $9.8 billion of business cash flow): $8.5 billion in 2026, $9.2 billion in 2027, $9.5 billion in 2028, then 3 percent a year to 2035 ($11.7 billion), then flat. Business value is about $182.8 billion, net debt $9.3 billion, leaving about $173.5 billion, or $375.04 per share. It does not assume the price gains the company has guided for 2026. Debt. The manufacturing side had $11.0 billion of borrowings at December 31, 2025, with only $35 million due within a year, so there is no near-term maturity wall. Its cash was $9.3 billion; consolidated cash fell $3.3 billion by June 30, 2026 after $6.5 billion of share repurchases in the first half, and we assumed all of that came from the manufacturing side, leaving about $6.1 billion, of which we treat about $4.4 billion (roughly one month of operating costs) as needed to run the business and $1.7 billion as excess. Net debt of $9.3 billion is that debt less the excess cash. We did not have the June 2026 debt balance; the interest rate on this debt (around 5 percent) is close enough to 6 percent that we made no adjustment. What changed since our last analysis. Our August 2026 estimate was $95, $227 and $326 per share. The new figures are higher mainly because we now discount all cash flows at 6 percent with no separate terminal growth, where the earlier work used 10 to 11 percent, and because we no longer subtract the retiree-benefit liability. Offsetting that, we use a lower, through-cycle earnings level than 2025 and price in the disclosed tariff burden. New information since then is the $51.2 billion backlog and the strong first half of 2026. What would make this wrong. The base case is challenged by the fact that 2025 pricing was unfavorable and tariffs are rising to $2.6 billion in 2026; if tariff costs are not offset by volume, the base level would sit closer to our bear path. On the other side, a demand surge beyond the backlog (for example in power generation for data centers) is not counted here.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see one of the strongest multi-year uptrends among large industrial stocks. According to the annual report's performance graph, $100 invested at the end of 2020 (dividends reinvested) grew to about $116 in 2021, $138 in 2022, $173 in 2023, $216 in 2024 and $346 in 2025, a series of higher highs and higher lows with the pace accelerating in 2025 (about +60 percent that year). The company's own repurchase prices tell the same story: it paid roughly $256 per share on average in 2023, $329 in 2024 and $369 in 2025. A trend follower would treat the primary trend as up, with pullbacks toward rising long-term averages as the areas to watch. A cautious chartist would note the stock is extended far above its long-term averages after a near-vertical 2025, that such moves often end in sharp corrections or extended sideways consolidation, and that a break of the prior consolidation lows would signal that the trend has changed.
