Business condition attached to the margin of safety At least two consecutive quarters of positive owner earnings (operating cash flow excluding working-capital release, after stock compensation and capital spending), with gross margin at or above about 28% and continued eligibility for U.S. manufacturing tax credits under the foreign-content rules in force since January 1, 2026.
SolarEdge Technologies designs and sells equipment that converts and manages power from rooftop and commercial solar systems: inverters, power optimizers that sit under each panel, and home batteries. In 2025 it booked $1,184 million of revenue: $718 million in the United States, $318 million in Europe and $149 million in other international markets. One customer took 18.6% of revenue and the top three took 35.8%. What happened. From 2016 through 2022 the business made money every year. Owner earnings ran between $1.00 and $2.96 per share. We define owner earnings as operating cash flow with working-capital swings removed, after stock compensation and the capital spending needed to keep the business running. Then the business broke. Starting in the third quarter of 2023, European distributors cancelled and pushed out orders. European revenue fell from $1,904 million in 2023 to $323 million in 2024 and $318 million in 2025. Total revenue fell from $2,977 million in 2023 to $901 million in 2024. That year the company wrote down $739 million of inventory and $225 million of plant and equipment, and lost $1,806 million. It lost another $405 million in 2025. Owner earnings were -$1.11 per share in 2023, -$13.71 in 2024 and -$3.69 in 2025. Since then the company has restructured. It discontinued its separate energy-storage activity in 2024; it still sells home batteries. It sold the last of its e-Mobility business in February 2026 for $12 million. In 2025 it cut research and development spending by 20%, sales and marketing by 20% and general and administrative costs by 31%. How we treated the numbers. The inventory and plant write-downs are non-cash charges, so we added them back; even so, 2024 owner earnings were deeply negative. Operating cash flow was positive in 2025 ($104 million) and in the first half of 2026 ($36 million). That was because working capital turned into cash, mainly inventory, prepaid assets and supplier payables. Without that release the business lost cash in both periods. We estimate first-half 2026 owner earnings at about -$65 million, or about -$1.07 per share. The full second-quarter report was not available to us, so this estimate is built from the reported figures and is approximate. Why we do not use the long-run average. The ten-year median of owner earnings is $1.57 per share. But the good years came under conditions that have since reversed. In 2019 revenue was similar at $1,426 million, and the company earned a 33.6% gross margin while spending about $290 million on operating expenses. In the first half of 2026 gross margin was 24.9%, and operating expenses ran at about $470 million a year. The company names Sungrow, Huawei, Sigenergy, SMA and other mostly Chinese inverter makers as competitors, and European sales have not come back. So we value the business as it stands now: restructured, growing again, and still losing money. Recent trend. First-half 2026 revenue was $657 million, up 29% on a year earlier. In the second quarter revenue was $346 million at a 27.5% gross margin, with an operating loss of $16 million and a net loss of $31 million. Battery volume recognized as revenue rose 61% in 2025. Production in the U.S. earns federal manufacturing tax credits, which the company books as a reduction in cost of revenue. The direction is clearly better. But the company has not had a profitable year since 2023, and one good quarter does not set the level. Policy risks named in the filing. The 2025 federal tax law ended the homeowner solar credit at the end of 2025. It also shortened the credits used by lease and commercial customers: projects that start construction more than a year after the law was enacted must be in service by December 31, 2027. From January 1, 2026, new foreign-content rules apply both to the manufacturing credit SolarEdge earns and to its customers' credits. The U.S. provided 61% of 2025 sales, so part of today's U.S. demand may rest on credits that are running out. The cases, discounted at 6% and spread over about 61.2 million shares: Bear, -$4.79 per share. Losses continue at the first-half-2026 pace, about $130 million a year, for three years. The U.S. credit cutoff and the foreign-content rules keep margins under pressure, and no later earnings are credited. At June 30, 2026 the company held about $547 million of cash and short-term securities, against $337 million of 2.25% convertible notes due 2029. Three years of such losses (about $325 million) would more than use up the roughly $210 million by which cash exceeds those notes. The business would then owe more than it is worth, and shareholders would stand behind noteholders. The present value of the losses is about -$293 million. Base, -$2.04 per share. Losses keep narrowing, though more slowly than they did in 2025: about -$90 million over the next twelve months, then -$45 million, then break-even. We credit no profit because the company has not yet earned one under current conditions. Bull, +$1.23 per share. The second-quarter economics hold and improve. Revenue holds and gross margin stays near 27-28%. Rising battery attachment and U.S. manufacturing credits carry the business to losses of about $40 million next year, then profits of $25-40 million a year in years two to five. Those profits fade to zero after year six as the U.S. tax-credit window closes. What would change this. The key is a sustained return to profit. Several consecutive quarters of positive owner earnings, with gross margin near 28% or better, would show the restructured business has real earning power. A renewed recovery in Europe would be further evidence. Either one would justify crediting earnings well beyond the U.S. credit window. Until then the shares have no demonstrated earning value. Their support is the cash on the balance sheet, which this method does not add to the cases. Margin-of-safety price. Price alone is not enough. The margin-of-safety price is $2.00, and it applies only once the company shows at least two consecutive quarters of positive owner earnings. That is about 40% of the roughly $4.80 per share that $0.65 per share of profit (about $40 million a year), sustained for ten years, would be worth.
