Business condition attached to the margin of safety Capital spending falls back to about $12 billion a year or less in 2027, and two consecutive quarterly filings confirm it.
Tesla designs, builds and sells electric vehicles, including Model Y. It also sells regulatory emissions credits to other carmakers and sells battery storage: Megapack for utilities and industry, and Powerwall for homes. In 2025 it booked $94.8 billion of revenue. Of that, $69.5 billion was automotive, $12.8 billion was energy generation and storage, and $12.5 billion was services and other. About half of sales are in the United States, 22% in China and the rest in other countries. How we measure earnings. We look at the cash the business could hand its owners each year. That is operating cash flow, minus swings in working capital, minus stock-based pay (a real cost to shareholders), minus the capital spending needed just to keep the business where it is. Two judgements matter. First, Tesla records the vehicles it puts on lease inside operating cash flow. We treat them as capital spending, because the depreciation on those cars is otherwise added back with no matching cost. Second, in a year when revenue does not grow, we count all capital spending as upkeep. In 2024 and 2025 revenue was flat to down, so this includes Tesla's heavy spending on AI computing. The $6.3 billion deferred-tax benefit booked in 2023 was a paper gain and does not count. On that basis, owner earnings were $2.7 billion in 2021 and $11.4 billion in 2022, the peak of vehicle pricing. They were then $4.6 billion in 2023, $1.0 billion in 2024 and $2.7 billion in 2025. Our starting point is the median of 2021-2025, about $0.79 per share or roughly $2.8 billion a year. These are the years Tesla has run at its present scale, and the window covers both the 2021-22 upswing and the 2023-25 price-cutting downswing. Before 2021 Tesla was a much smaller business that lost money. What sits inside that number matters. In 2025, $1.99 billion of revenue came from regulatory credits, which cost almost nothing to produce. Another $1.68 billion was interest on about $44 billion of cash and investments. Together these roughly equal all of 2025's owner earnings. In other words, the car, energy and service operations came close to breaking even after upkeep spending and stock pay. What is changing: - Credit revenue fell 28% in 2025. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted July 4, 2025, restricted credit programs tied to Tesla's products and repealed U.S. consumer tax credits for electric vehicles. - Stock-based pay rose to $2.18 billion in the first half of 2026 from $1.21 billion a year earlier. This came alongside the CEO's 96 million-share interim award (August 2025) and the 423.7 million-share 2025 CEO Performance Award, which shareholders approved in November 2025. - Tesla expects capital spending above $20 billion in 2026, more than double 2025's $8.5 billion, mainly for AI compute, data centers and new production lines. It spent $8.3 billion in the first half. - In January 2026 Tesla agreed to invest about $2 billion in xAI, a company affiliated with its CEO. - On the positive side, energy storage gross profit rose from $1.1 billion in 2023 to $2.6 billion in 2024 and $3.8 billion in 2025. Megafactories are ramping in Shanghai and Lathrop, California, and another is under construction near Houston, Texas. Revenue rose 21% in the first half of 2026. We give no value to Robotaxi (launched June 2025), Cybercab, Optimus or the wider AI program, because none yet produces earnings we can point to. Since we give them no value, we count spending above Tesla's normal upkeep and growth needs as a cost. Base case, $2.70 per share. Credits roughly halve. The higher stock pay continues, easing somewhat after the interim award vests in 2027. Storage profit keeps growing at about half its 2025 pace through 2029, while cars hold steady. About $15 billion of above-normal spending in 2026-27 returns nothing, and the cash spent on it and on the xAI stake stops earning interest. Earnings settle near $1.9 billion a year. They hold through 2045, supported by the factories, charging network and storage business, then fade over ten years. Bull case, $22.28 per share. Storage profit keeps growing close to its 2025 pace until 2030. Car margins recover about two-thirds of the way back to 2023 levels, and credits decline only modestly. Part of the 2026 spending turns out to be productive capacity, leaving about $6 billion as excess. Earnings reach about $6.7 billion a year and hold through 2050. Bear case, -$8.08 per share. Credits disappear by 2027, tariffs squeeze car margins and storage profit stalls. About $29 billion of above-normal spending over 2026-28, including the xAI stake, produces nothing. The operating business loses money for several years and only breaks even from 2032. This case comes out below zero, about $29 billion in total. That is not because Tesla owes more than it owns: it holds far more cash than its roughly $7.7 billion of long-term debt. The negative result comes from how we value the cash. We credit it only with the interest it earns, and in this case the spending uses up more than that interest and the remaining business would ever return. Margin-of-safety price. Because the bear case is below zero, a low price alone does not cover the downside. What decides it is spending discipline. If capital spending falls back to about $12 billion a year or less in 2027, and two consecutive quarters confirm it, our base value rises to about $4.59 per share, and the margin-of-safety price is $2.50. What could make this wrong: if the AI, Robotaxi or Optimus spending starts producing measurable earnings, the shares are worth well above our base case. Further weakness in car pricing would push the value below it. We could not split the first-half 2026 cash flows by business or lease activity, because only summary quarterly figures were available.
