Ethan Allen, founded in 1932, designs, makes and sells home furnishings through 141 company-operated design centers (136 in the U.S., five in Canada), independently operated design centers in the U.S. and abroad, and ethanallen.com. About 75% of its furniture comes from its own eleven North American facilities, including plants in Vermont, North Carolina, Mexico and Honduras. That vertical integration has held consolidated gross margin near 60% through good years and bad (61.2% in fiscal 2026). The company carries no debt and holds $187.5 million of cash and investments. The long record is one of steady cash generation rather than growth. Over the twelve years from fiscal 2015 to 2026, owner earnings (cash the business produces after the spending needed to maintain it) averaged about $2.13 per share, and most of that was paid out as dividends. Sales, however, are well below where they were two decades ago: $980 million in fiscal 2008 against $579.5 million in fiscal 2026. The company has instead run a consistent playbook of consolidating into fewer, more productive design centers, keeping manufacturing in North America, and returning cash to shareholders. Leadership has been unusually stable: M. Farooq Kathwari, now 82, has led the company for decades, including through the 2008-2010 downturn, and the annual report does not describe a succession plan. Earnings level. We anchor on the median owner earnings from fiscal 2015 to 2026, excluding fiscal 2020, when every plant and design center closed for about ten weeks. That median is about $1.90 per share. Interest earned on the cash pile is removed (we credit the surplus cash directly instead), which leaves roughly $1.85. Two changes since that window ended bear on the level. First, tariffs: since October 2025, upholstery made in the company's Mexican plants has faced a 25% U.S. tariff, and management estimates annual tariff exposure at about $15 million, up to about $0.45 per share after tax if none were recovered through pricing. Retail price increases have offset part of this, but retail and wholesale gross margins both fell in fiscal 2026. Second, government contract sales fell 56% in fiscal 2026. We assume roughly half the tariff cost is absorbed permanently, which puts sustainable earning power near $1.60 per share under today's conditions. Near term. Fiscal 2026 owner earnings were $1.69 per share, down about 19% from $2.10. Stripping out interest income and a one-time $5.0 million refund of tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court leaves about $1.29. Retail written orders fell 6.1% and wholesale orders 11.2%, the wholesale backlog fell 9.3% to $44.3 million, and customer deposits for undelivered orders fell from $75.1 million to $62.7 million. Fiscal 2027 therefore starts with less in the pipeline and a full year of the new tariffs. Base case (~$31.35/share). Owner earnings fall about 19% again in fiscal 2027, to roughly $1.05, matching last year's rate of decline. They then recover over four years to about $1.60 as price increases and the 4.6% headcount reduction already made work through. This follows the pattern of fiscal 2017-2019, when earnings dipped to $1.55 and recovered to $1.91. After that, earnings are held flat. The brand, the owned manufacturing and an unbroken dividend record support persistence, but two decades of shrinking sales give no evidence for growth. The business is worth about $25.60 per share, plus $5.77 per share of cash beyond operating needs (we hold back $40 million), with no debt to subtract. Bear case (~$19.05/share). Furniture demand follows housing activity, and this business has been through a severe downturn before. In fiscal 2009 sales fell 31%, and the company reported net losses in both fiscal 2009 and 2010. The bear case puts one such downturn on top of today's soft conditions: one weak year, then two years of cash losses, then a four-year climb back to about $1.30 per share. That is lower than before because the tariff costs stay. After year ten, earnings shrink about 3% a year, the rate at which sales have declined since fiscal 2008. The business is worth about $13.30 per share, plus the same $5.77 of surplus cash. With no debt and owned plants, the company should come through such a downturn intact, though the dividend would almost certainly be cut. In fiscal 2026 the company paid $46.3 million in dividends against $43.2 million of owner earnings. Bull case (~$40.97/share). Price increases recover the tariff cost in full, and the gross-margin strength seen in fiscal 2026 holds. Orders steady and earnings return within three years to about $2.20 per share, below the roughly $2.40 the business earned in fiscal 2024 (after removing interest income) under today's mortgage rates, then hold there. No repeat of the 2021-2023 pandemic boom is assumed. The business is worth about $35.20 per share plus $5.77 of surplus cash. Earlier published figures were built on a different basis and are not comparable. On the business itself, the news since the last review is mixed. Gross margin improved, part of the tariff cost was refunded, and cash grew to $187.5 million. But the retail order pickup seen in fiscal 2025 reversed, contract sales collapsed, and new tariffs on Mexican-made product took effect. Margin-of-safety price ($19). We are fairly confident of the earnings level within a range of about $1.30-$2.00 per share; twelve years of data show a narrow band outside the pandemic years. The worst plausible event is a 2009-style collapse in demand. The structure survives it: no debt, owned plants, substantial cash and no customer concentration. If we are wrong about the two things most in doubt, how much of the tariff cost sticks and how long orders keep falling, the shares are worth roughly $19-$24. The price assumes a holding period of three years or more for earnings to recover. The dividend pays something in the meantime, but it currently exceeds earnings and would likely be cut in a downturn. At $19, the price is at the downturn case's value, and only a partial recovery toward normal earnings, together with the dividend, is needed for the base case to imply 20% a year. Above that, the result depends too much on the recovery arriving on time.

Sales geography
United States (about 97% of net sales, from company-operated and independent design centers across the Northeast, Midwest, South and West, plus ethanallen.com); Canada (five company-operated design centers, with Canadian sales up 2.3% in fiscal 2026); a small wholesale export business to independent retailers in Asia (including China), the Middle East and Europe, under 1% of wholesale sales.
Historical growth strategy
The company changed from a wholesale furniture maker selling through dealers into a vertically integrated brand that controls design, North American manufacturing, logistics and a largely company-operated retail network, partly by taking over licensee design centers. Since then it has focused on reworking its products, marketing and store base (fewer, smaller, more productive design centers, plus online sales) rather than expanding. It returns most of its cash through regular and special dividends and occasional buybacks.
Chart analysis
Over more than 20 years the shares have moved sideways in a wide range of roughly $12-$38 (unadjusted for dividends). Peaks came in the mid-2000s and the low came in 2009. A chartist would call it a long-term range-bound stock with no lasting trend. More recently the shares fell from about $29-30 in mid-2025 to the low $20s by October 2025, and made a 52-week low around $18.70 in spring 2026. They bounced to about $23-24 in August and slipped back to about $21 in September. A technician would treat the high-teens area as support and $24-25 (the late-2025 breakdown level) as resistance, with the high dividend yield helping put a floor under the price.
