Connection (formerly PC Connection) sells IT hardware, software and services to businesses, enterprises and government agencies through three segments: Business Solutions (small/mid-size commercial customers), Enterprise Solutions (large corporate accounts) and Public Sector Solutions (federal, state, local government and education). It is a low-margin, high-turnover reseller: it buys computers, networking gear, software and cloud subscriptions from manufacturers and resells them with services layered on top, so its profitability depends more on volume, mix and working-capital efficiency than on pricing power. The company carries no debt and holds roughly $190 million of cash, so this valuation reflects the ongoing business rather than a leveraged balance sheet. We measure the cash the business actually generates for owners each year: operating cash flow, with the swings caused by inventory and receivables timing removed, stock-based compensation subtracted (it is a real cost even though it is a non-cash expense), and only the spending needed to maintain the existing operation (as opposed to spending that funds growth) treated as a cost. On that basis, per-share owner earnings grew fairly steadily from about $1.88 in 2016 to a range of roughly $3.2-$3.7 in 2023-2025, helped by disciplined working-capital management, modest capital spending needs (the business is not capital intensive) and years of share buybacks that shrank the share count from about 26.9 million to 25.6 million. We used the middle of the last seven years (2019-2025) as the normalized starting level, about $3.22 of owner earnings per share; that window includes both the 2020 pandemic trough and the outsized 2022 hardware-refresh year, so it captures a full demand cycle rather than just the good years. It is worth noting that 2025 reported net income was actually down slightly from 2024; the growth in owner earnings per share came mainly from a smaller share count and better working-capital and capital-spending efficiency, not from faster underlying profit growth, and our near-term growth assumption below reflects that. Our base case assumes modest, low-single-digit growth in owner earnings (roughly 3-4% a year) for the next decade, reflecting a mature, competitive reseller market. Beyond ten years we assume the business continues at a slow, sub-1% real growth rate in perpetuity: Connection's core assets are its vendor relationships, sales force and government contract vehicles, which are continually renewed by the operating spending already embedded in owner earnings, so a going-concern view (rather than a fixed end date) is appropriate, but growth is capped low because direct-from-manufacturer and cloud-marketplace sales are a persistent structural headwind for hardware resellers. On these assumptions the business is worth about $75 per share today. About 63% of that value comes from the years beyond the ten-year forecast, which is typical for a durable but low-growth franchise and means the valuation leans heavily on our view that Connection's reseller relationships persist rather than erode - we flag this because it is the single biggest judgment in the analysis. Our bear case assumes continued softness in Public Sector Solutions (this segment is exposed to government shutdowns, continuing resolutions and tighter federal procurement budgets) combined with accelerating share loss to manufacturers selling direct and to cloud marketplaces, producing an 8% decline in owner earnings in the first year, a further mild decline in year two, and only slow, sub-2% growth thereafter as the business settles at a smaller but still solidly profitable size. That case is worth about $52 per share. Because the balance sheet carries no debt, even this scenario remains comfortably profitable rather than distressed. Our bull case assumes Connection captures a disproportionate share of enterprise and government data-center hardware refresh spending (servers, networking and storage tied to AI infrastructure buildouts), that its higher-margin services and cloud practice grows faster than product resale, and that the company continues returning capital through buybacks at a similar pace. That case is worth about $101 per share. Putting these together, the margin-of-safety price is around $61, a meaningful discount to our base-case estimate that reflects the real, if moderate, downside risk in the bear case. We were not able to fully reconcile every individual working-capital line item across all ten years of filings from the summary disclosures alone, though the reconciliation checks we could run tied out closely, and nothing in the filings suggested any accounting irregularity.
