Insight Enterprises is a large, US-based provider of IT hardware, software, and cloud/technology services to businesses and public-sector organizations worldwide. It makes money three ways: reselling computers, servers, and other devices to corporate customers (its largest but lowest-margin business); reselling and supporting third-party software and cloud subscriptions; and, increasingly, its own higher-margin services - cloud migration, managed services, and (since acquiring SADA Systems, a leading Google Cloud reseller, in October 2023) cloud and AI consulting built around the Google Cloud platform. The headline numbers look discouraging at first glance: revenue has fallen for three straight years, from a 2022 peak of about $10.4 billion to about $8.2 billion in 2025, as corporate hardware spending cooled after the pandemic-era buying surge. Reported net income has fallen too, partly because of rising severance and restructuring charges (workforce reductions in each of the last two years) and a near-doubling of amortization charges tied to acquisitions. But the cash actually generated by the underlying business - what we call owner earnings, after stripping out the swings caused by financing customer purchases (receivables, payables, and inventory), stock-based pay, and normal reinvestment - has held up remarkably well and has grown steadily through this period, rising from about $6.66 per share in 2020 to about $9.21 per share in 2025 (10-year range $3.48-$9.21, with only one meaningful dip, in 2019, tied to a heavy year of facility and data-center investment). The reason: as low-margin hardware resale has shrunk, it has been increasingly offset by growth in the far higher-margin services and cloud business. Two accounting judgments matter here and are worth stating plainly. First, Insight's recent acquisitions (SADA in 2023, plus roughly $250-480 million a year in further deals in 2024 and 2025) produce large non-cash amortization charges on the acquired customer relationships and technology. That amortization is properly added back in an owner-earnings calculation because it isn't a cash cost, but it means the risk that these acquisitions don't keep paying off has to be carried in our growth assumptions rather than in the current earnings level - so we have not assumed Insight keeps buying growth at the same pace indefinitely; our base case assumes mostly organic, modest growth. Second, cash from operations at Insight swings unusually widely from year to year (it was actually negative in 2017 and swung by hundreds of millions of dollars in several other years) because of how the company finances customer receivables and vendor payables. We removed these timing swings so the valuation reflects the durable earning power of the business rather than which way working capital happened to move in a given year. We also note diluted share count fell by about 15% in 2025 versus 2024, mostly because Insight retired its convertible notes and settled related warrants - a real, permanent reduction in the fully diluted share base rather than an accounting artifact, and it materially lifts the most recent per-share figures we relied on. Given the steady, still-improving recent trend, we estimate Insight's current owner earnings at about $8.10 per share (the median of 2021-2025). We valued the business over an explicit 10-year forecast at a fixed 6% discount rate, then added a view of what it is worth beyond that. Insight's core function - helping enterprises buy, deploy, and manage technology - isn't tied to any single product cycle or contract with a fixed expiration date; it is a durable, if highly competitive and thin-margin, service. We therefore valued the years beyond year 10 as a perpetuity, but capped its assumed growth at a modest 1% a year - well below what simply extrapolating the last five years' improvement would suggest - given that hardware distribution remains a commoditized, competitive business under structural pressure. Even at that conservative rate, this long-run "tail" makes up roughly two-thirds of our total estimate, which we flag because it means the valuation depends heavily on Insight remaining a relevant, competitive business a decade from now rather than on any near-term catalyst. Our three cases: Bear case (roughly a one-in-ten downside outcome): hardware distribution keeps shrinking faster than the services business can replace the lost margin dollars; the Google Cloud/SADA relationship underdelivers, whether through client concentration losses or margin concessions to Google or competing resellers; and the severance and restructuring charges taken in each of the last two years turn out to be a recurring cost of doing business rather than one-time cleanup. Owner earnings starts near $7.00 per share and declines about 2% a year, settling into a smaller, flat, sustainable business - working out to about $99.85 per share. Base case (our median estimate): the mix shift toward higher-margin services continues at a measured pace, revenue stabilizes and grows modestly as IT spending normalizes (helped near-term by the Windows 10 hardware-refresh cycle), and owner earnings per share grows around 3% a year, aided somewhat by continued share buybacks - working out to about $192.20 per share. Bull case (roughly a one-in-ten upside outcome): enterprise AI infrastructure spending drives a sustained, multi-year technology-refresh and cloud-migration wave, the SADA and other recent acquisitions perform above plan, and Insight keeps expanding margins while continuing to buy back stock. Owner earnings per share grows around 8% a year for a decade - working out to about $336.78 per share. Because our bear case is only moderately worse than our base estimate (about half of it), we treat this as a fairly stable, if cyclical, operating business rather than a speculative one, warranting a smaller margin of safety than we'd demand for a riskier company. On that basis the margin-of-safety price is about $129.86 - notably close to the $126-$133 per-share range Insight's own management paid for stock buybacks in 2023 and 2025, a useful real-world sanity check on that price. We were able to fully reconcile Insight's reported cash flow to our owner-earnings figure in every year of the past decade without any unexplained gap, so there is nothing material to flag as unresolved in the underlying numbers.
