Benchmark Electronics builds electronic and precision-machined assemblies to order for other companies. About 28% of 2025 sales came from semiconductor equipment makers, 22% industrial, 19% aerospace and defense, 18% medical and 13% computing and communications. Its ten largest customers took 51% of everything it made in 2025, and Applied Materials alone took 14%. It is a manufacturing-services business with thin margins (gross margin near 10%) and no pricing power of its own; what it offers is reliability, regulatory qualification and factory capacity in Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, the United States, Europe and China. What the business earns. We measure the cash an owner could take out each year: operating cash flow with the swings in inventory, receivables and customer advances stripped out, less the cost of stock issued to employees and less the capital spending needed to keep the factories running. Stripping out working capital matters enormously here. In 2021-2022 the company built about $400 million of inventory and receivables during the parts shortage, then released most of it in 2023-2025; raw cash flow therefore swung from minus $177 million to plus $189 million while underlying earnings barely moved. On the steadier measure, owner earnings over 2019-2025 ran between $0.68 and $1.96 a share, and adding back cash interest (so the business is valued before its lenders) between $0.92 and $2.69. We anchor on the median of 2019-2025, about $1.56 a share or roughly $57 million a year before interest. That window starts after the 2017-2018 period, which was distorted by one-time U.S. tax-reform charges, and covers a full cycle: the 2020 shutdown trough, the 2022 shortage peak and the 2023-2024 semiconductor-equipment slump. Amortisation of acquired intangibles is small (about $5 million a year) and is not a material wasting asset. Recent results. 2025 owner earnings fell to $1.02 a share from $1.93, a decline of about 47%, because sales were flat, computing sales fell 27%, an indirect-tax settlement and restructuring cost $29.5 million, and the tax rate spiked. Our base case nonetheless starts year one flat at the anchor rather than continuing that decline, because the first half of 2026 already shows the reversal in the filings: sales rose 12.5% to $1.43 billion and net income was $32.9 million against $4.6 million a year earlier. Base case. Business cash flow holds at about $1.56 a share for ten years and continues at that level afterwards, supported by multi-year qualified programs in medical, defense and semiconductor equipment that customers rarely move once validated. No growth is credited: new program wins, share gains and semiconductor-equipment expansion are real possibilities but not yet in the bag. The business is worth about $946 million, or $26.00 a share. It owed $181 million under its bank facilities at June 30, 2026 (a term loan and revolver maturing June 27, 2030, with the term loan's rate fixed by a swap) and held $315 million of cash; treating $100 million of that cash as needed to run the factories, net cash adds about $0.93 a share, for $26.93. Bear case. A semiconductor-equipment downturn of the kind seen in 2019 and again in 2023-2024 (sales fell 9-12% in each episode), combined with a loss or sharp cut from a top-ten customer. Business cash flow drops to $1.30 and $1.20 in the first two years, troughs at $0.55 and $0.75 a share in years three and four (comparable to the 2018 and 2020 lows), and settles at $1.00 thereafter as a permanently smaller customer base, with no recovery to today's level. The business is worth about $586 million, the company owes about $181 million against cash of $315 million, leaving $17.02 a share. Interest is covered even at the trough, and the 2030 maturity is not a refinancing threat at current debt levels. Bull case. The 2026 recovery carries business cash flow back to the levels the company actually reached in 2022 and 2024, rising from $1.90 to about $2.29 a share by year three and holding there. No expansion beyond what has already been earned is assumed. The business is worth about $1.37 billion; net of debt and surplus cash, $38.60 a share. Margin-of-safety price. How sure are we of the earnings level? Moderately. The seven-year record ties out exactly to reported profit plus non-cash charges, but annual figures swing by a factor of two or three, so any single year is a poor guide. The worst plausible outcome is losing Applied Materials or another top customer in the middle of a semiconductor-equipment bust, or a prolonged tariff dispute disrupting the Mexico and Asia plants; no case fully models a double hit. The structure would survive it: debt is modest, the company carries net cash, book value is about $30.67 a share, and its assets are factories and inventory with real resale value. If we are wrong about the two things most likely to go wrong, the normal earnings level (say it is closer to $1.20 than $1.56) and the customer concentration, the shares would be worth in the high teens. The price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period for the next upturn, and the company pays about $0.67 a share a year in dividends during that period. $15 is below what the bear case supports, and from that price, with the dividend, only a return to the middle of the company's own demonstrated earnings range within a few years is needed for the 20% annual target; above that, the swing in earnings is wide enough that a bad cycle could eliminate the return. The margin-of-safety price is $15. Our previous estimates were built on a different basis and are not comparable. What changed in the business since then is the first-half 2026 recovery in sales and profit, which supports holding the earnings level rather than marking it down.

Sales geography
United States (Northeast, Midwest, West, South; about 44% of 2025 sales booked in the Americas including Mexico), Asia (about 43%, chiefly Malaysia, Thailand, China and Singapore operations serving global OEMs), Europe (about 13%, chiefly Netherlands and Romania).
Historical growth strategy
Organic growth by winning outsourced, low-to-medium-volume, high-complexity manufacturing programs from existing and new OEM customers in regulated markets (semiconductor equipment, medical, aerospace and defense, industrial), adding factory capacity in low-cost regions such as Penang, Malaysia and Mexico, with occasional bolt-on acquisitions (Secure Communication Systems in 2015) and a steady shift away from high-volume computing and telecom work.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a long sideways range: the shares have oscillated roughly between the high teens and the mid-40s for more than a decade without establishing a lasting uptrend. Rallies have repeatedly stalled near the prior highs set in the 2017-2018 and 2024 peaks, while sell-offs have halted in the high teens to low 20s, making that zone long-term support. Momentum tends to track the semiconductor-equipment cycle, so the chart reads as a cyclical range rather than a trend, with a decisive weekly close above the prior multi-year highs needed to signal a breakout.
