Quanterix Corp (QTRX) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings positive for at least two consecutive fiscal years after stock-based compensation, with the cash burn no longer funded from the balance sheet.
Quanterix sells instruments, consumables and services used in life-science research. In July 2025 it acquired Akoya Biosciences, a spatial biology company, for total consideration of $151.0 million, which roughly doubled the depreciation and amortization charge in 2025. Revenue was $138.9 million in 2025, $137.4 million in 2024 and $122.4 million in 2023, split across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. Our valuation starts from owner earnings: operating cash flow, less the cash effect of working-capital swings, less stock-based compensation, less the part of capital spending needed just to maintain the business. On that basis the company has not produced positive owner earnings in any year we measured. Per diluted share it was about -$0.63 in 2023, -$1.02 in 2024 and -$2.30 in 2025. Operating cash flow was -$18.8 million, -$35.2 million and -$77.2 million in those years, and stock-based compensation of $16.8 million, $20.0 million and $20.7 million was a further real cost that the cash figure adds back. Net losses were $28.4 million, $38.5 million and $107.2 million; the 2025 loss included a $7.8 million impairment and Akoya integration costs. Our check that net loss plus non-cash items plus working-capital changes reconciles to operating cash flow ties to within rounding. The losses widened in the most recent year, so the starting level is negative and there is no positive earnings level to anchor on. All three cases are valued at $0 per share. This is a judgement about evidence, not a claim that the shares are certain to be worthless. Management states in the 2025 annual report that it expects to be cash flow breakeven in 2026, but adds that this depends on meeting both revenue and expense goals. A management target of that kind, and cost savings from combining Akoya that have not yet shown up in reported cash flow, are not results the business has already delivered, so we do not credit them. Revenue growth has been real (about $16 million from 2023 to 2025 before the acquisition's contribution is separated out), but it has come with cash burn that grew faster. We also assume no value from cash or investments on the balance sheet, because the method counts only what the business earns, and it currently spends more than it earns. Bear case: cash burn continues near 2025 levels and the business is worth nothing on an earnings basis. Base case: the company narrows but does not close the gap to positive owner earnings, so still nothing is supported. Bull case: even if the company reaches its 2026 breakeven target on cash flow, stock-based compensation of roughly $20 million a year would still leave owner earnings negative unless spending falls further, so no evidenced value emerges. What would make this wrong: sustained positive operating cash flow after stock compensation, which the 2026 and 2027 filings would show. The margin-of-safety price is $0 until the business condition noted changes.
