Performance Food Group is a US broadline foodservice and convenience-store distributor (fiscal year ends late June). It has three parts: Foodservice (restaurants, schools, healthcare), Convenience (the Core-Mark business, supplying convenience stores with cigarettes, alternative nicotine, candy, snacks and food), and Specialty (Vistar vending/theater/dollar-store supply and Cheney Brothers, acquired in fiscal 2025 for about $2.6 billion). Revenue was $67.8 billion in fiscal 2026 with thin margins, so cash generation depends on volume, cost control and working capital. How we measured earnings: we start from operating cash flow, remove year-to-year swings in receivables, inventory and payables, and subtract stock compensation and the portion of capital spending needed just to stay in business. On that basis owner earnings were about $4.90 per share in fiscal 2023, $4.49 in 2024, $4.52 in 2025 and $6.67 in 2026. We measure the business from fiscal 2023, after the fiscal 2022 Core-Mark acquisition year, whose results were distorted by inflation-driven inventory build. Fiscal 2026 rose 48%, helped by lower capital spending ($384M vs $506M) and about $92M of deferred taxes, so we do not treat it as the new normal. Judgement: the company pays for much of its truck fleet through finance leases, whose principal repayments ($242M in fiscal 2026, up from $89M in 2023) sit in financing cash flow but are a real cost of staying in business. We deduct them, which brings the typical level to roughly $4.00 per share (median of fiscal 2023-2026). Large non-cash amortization of acquired customer relationships (about $272M a year) is added back as a sunk cost, which is why we credit only modest growth. Base case (about $78): earnings of about $4.00 per share grow 2% a year for ten years, then stay flat. Growth credited is proven: Convenience cases sold rose 4.8% in fiscal 2026 and revenue has grown every year, with pricing inflation and steady case growth; we credit less than that. Not credited: further large acquisitions, share gains, margin expansion, and any repeat of the fiscal 2026 jump. Year-one growth is set at 2% versus a trailing actual of 48%, the trailing figure being flattered by the items above. Bear case (about $38): earnings drop to about $2.80 per share, near the fiscal 2025 lease-adjusted level less a cushion for rising fleet costs and thin margins, stay flat for ten years, then decline 3% a year as cigarette volumes, which the company itself says are generally declining, erode Convenience profits. Debt is about $5.0 billion (27% floating) after the Cheney purchase, so interest costs weigh on this case. Bull case (about $114): earnings of about $5.00 per share (close to fiscal 2026 after lease costs) grow 4% a year for ten years, matching recent case growth, then hold flat. What would make this wrong: higher interest rates on floating debt, faster tobacco decline, customer losses in Foodservice, or another large debt-funded acquisition that fails to earn its cost. The margin-of-safety price of $48 leaves a wide cushion below the base case given thin margins, leverage and acquisition dependence.
