OneMain is a consumer lender. It makes personal loans, primarily to non-prime customers, through a network of over 1,500 branch offices in 44 states (as of its 2019 filing) supported by centralized and digital operations, and it also sells credit insurance products. It earns the gap between what it charges borrowers and what it pays on its own borrowings, less the cost of loans that go bad. How we measured earnings. For a lender, reported operating cash flow is misleading: the expected-loan-loss expense is added back as a non-cash item, while the actual money lost when loans are written off shows up in investing activities. In 2025 operating cash flow was $3.1 billion against net income of $783 million. We therefore treated net charge-offs (loans written off less recoveries, $1.84 billion in 2025) as the cost of keeping the loan book the same size, the lender's equivalent of maintenance spending. After also deducting stock compensation, a small capital-spending proxy (the filings do not break out capex, so we used the 'other investing, net' line, $97 million in 2025) and removing working-capital swings, owner earnings per share were: 2017 $4.21, 2018 $5.93, 2019 $9.13, 2020 $9.54, 2021 $10.79, 2022 $9.46, 2023 $7.46, 2024 $7.24, 2025 $9.85. Growth in the loan book is not deducted as a cost; the extra money lent to grow is treated as growth spending. 2017-2018 are early years after the merger integration and are not used as a guide. We also excluded 2019-2021 from the normal level: 2020-2021 had exceptionally low losses (2021 net charge-offs were $767 million, versus $1.84 billion in 2025), and we do not want to lift the normal level by conditions that have since reversed. We anchored on the 2022-2025 median of $8.46 per share. Growth check. Owner earnings per share rose about 36% in 2025 (from $7.24 to $9.85), largely because the write-off rate stabilised while operating cash flow rose. We assume 0% growth in year one, well below that rebound, because 2025 is one strong year after two weaker ones and we credit no recovery beyond the level the business has already sustained. Base case: owner earnings hold at about $8.46 per share for ten years, then fade to zero over the following ten years. What is credited: the demonstrated ability of this branch-based lending model to earn $7 to $11 per share every year from 2019 to 2025, through a pandemic and a sharp rise in write-offs, and a share count that fell from 136 million to 119 million. What is left out: any growth in loan balances, share gains, new products or lower loss rates, because none is contracted or a repeatable record we can rely on beyond the level already earned. Value about $80 per share. Bear case: losses climb by roughly $250 million a year above 2025's level (more than 2023 and 2024's step-ups, which took net charge-offs from $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion), cutting owner earnings to about $6.30 per share; the franchise then fades to zero gradually from year five to year fifteen. The business is heavily borrowed, with roughly $4 billion of interest and funding costs a year, which is why the downside is meaningfully lower. Value about $44. Bull case: owner earnings return to the $10.79 reached in 2021, and hold for ten years before fading over the next ten. This requires only that write-offs settle back to the levels already seen, with no growth credited. Value about $102. As a levered lender, we do not subtract debt again, because owner earnings are already after interest paid. The margin-of-safety price of $40 is close to the bear case because credit losses can move sharply and the borrowings amplify them. What would make this wrong: a further sustained rise in write-offs beyond 2025, higher borrowing costs, or regulatory limits on the interest rates it can charge. The filings reviewed do not include the full text of the 2020-2025 annual reports, so the 2020-2025 figures rest on the structured financial data tags in those filings; we could not separately confirm the capital spending line for those years.
