Synchrony Financial is a U.S. consumer lender that issues private-label, co-branded and general-purpose credit cards (plus some installment loans) through retail, health-care and manufacturer partners. Its five largest programs, Amazon, Lowe's, PayPal, Sam's Club and TJX, produced 54% of 2025 interest and fees on loans. Substantially all revenue comes from U.S. customers. It earns interest and fees on card balances, shares part of the profit with partners (retailer share arrangements were $4.0 billion in 2025), and pays for its own losses, deposits and borrowings. How we measured earnings. A lender's operating cash flow is misleading, because it adds back the provision for credit losses (about $5.2 billion in 2025) while the actual cash cost of bad loans shows up elsewhere as loans that are never repaid. We therefore charged actual net charge-offs ($5.7 billion in 2025) against cash flow, along with stock compensation and the equipment and software spending needed to keep the business running, and removed working-capital swings. On that basis owner earnings were about $3.4 billion in 2025, $2.9 billion in 2024, $3.6 billion in 2023, $3.9 billion in 2022, and between roughly $3.1 billion and $3.9 billion in each year from 2017 to 2021. That is close to reported net earnings of $3.55 billion in 2025. Total owner earnings have been essentially flat for nine years; the rise in per-share figures ($4.90 in 2017 to $9.15 in 2025) comes from share repurchases, which shrank the diluted share count from about 800 million to 374 million. We do not count future buybacks as growth. We used the median of 2022 to 2025, about $3.5 billion, and deducted roughly $83 million of annual preferred dividends, giving about $3.45 billion for common holders, or roughly $9.90 on the 347.6 million shares outstanding. We started in 2022 because 2020 and 2021 were distorted by pandemic-era loan runoff. Earnings grew about 20% in 2025 (from a weak 2024), but we assume 0% growth in year one, below that rate. Base case: $104 per share. Owner earnings stay flat at about $3.45 billion for ten years, then decline 10% a year. Support: the five largest partners have relationships of 14 years or more (46 years for Lowe's), their program agreements now expire between 2030 and 2035, Amazon's agreement was extended in 2025, and 22 of the 25 largest agreements run to 2028 or later (97% of those programs' interest and fees). Net charge-offs were 5.65% in 2025 and management's stated 2026 range is 5.5% to 6.0%, close to what we assumed. After 2035 we credit only a fading stream because nothing evidences renewal beyond those dates. Bear case: $64 per share. Earnings fall to the 2024 low of about $2.85 billion ($2.77 billion after preferred dividends), which reflects a year of 6.31% charge-offs, and stay there through 2029. Then the largest partners are assumed to leave as their agreements expire: about 11% of earnings is lost every two years from 2030 through 2035 (three programs), with a 15% annual fade after. This is a consumer lender with a partner concentration and funding costs that rise with rates, so the bad outcome is built from these named facts. Bull case: $133 per share. Earnings hold at the 2022 high of about $3.8 billion after preferred dividends, and, on the renewal record above, all top partners renew but with a slower 5% annual fade after 2035. We did not credit growth from the new OnePay Walmart program (launched September 2025) or the Lowe's commercial card portfolio purchase (about $0.8 billion of receivables, expected to close in the first half of 2026): both are real but small relative to the loan book and their profit is not yet visible in results. What could make this wrong. Loss of a large partner sooner than the disclosed expiry dates; charge-offs well above the 6.3% seen in 2024; a regulatory change to card fees or rates, which the filing does not quantify; or higher deposit funding costs. Note also that no debt was subtracted, since owner earnings are already after interest paid. The share count and preferred dividends are from the latest filing; a small part of 'all other investing' cash flow is used as a proxy for capital spending because the company does not report it separately.
