JPMorgan Chase is the largest U.S. bank. It runs consumer and small-business banking and Chase credit cards, a global corporate and investment bank (markets, lending and payments), commercial banking, and asset and wealth management. Earnings come from the spread between what it earns on loans and securities and what it pays on deposits and borrowings, card balances, fees and trading revenue. Because deposits and borrowings are the raw material of a bank, we value the earnings left for shareholders after interest and subtract no separate debt. The risk that comes from the bank's leverage is charged in the low case instead. HOW WE MEASURE EARNINGS. A bank's operating cash flow is not a useful guide: it swung from about +$107 billion in 2022 to about -$148 billion in 2025, almost entirely because of changes in trading, securities-financing and loan-sale balances. We strip those swings out. We treat share-based pay (about $3.6 billion in 2025) as a real cost, treat the provision for credit losses as a real cost rather than adding it back, and treat depreciation as offset by the spending needed to maintain premises and technology (the filings do not break that spending out). The result is earnings to common shareholders per diluted share: $6.19 in 2016, $10.72 in 2019, $15.36 in 2021, $12.09 in 2022, $16.23 in 2023, $19.75 in 2024 and $20.02 in 2025. NORMAL EARNING POWER: $14.16 PER SHARE. We used the median of 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2025 ($10.72, $12.09, $16.23 and $20.02). We left out 2020 and 2021, when the bank first built and then released credit reserves (2021 alone included a $12.1 billion reduction in the allowance for credit losses), and 2024, which included an initial gain of about $8.0 billion before tax on the Visa share exchange. The 2025 results confirm that 2024 was inflated: the Corporate segment's net income fell from $10.6 billion to $4.5 billion, and its interest income fell $3.7 billion on lower rates. The window covers both near-zero and high interest rates. Recent results are well above this level: first-half 2026 diluted earnings were $13.63 per share versus $10.31 a year earlier. We did not raise the normal level on that, because we could not tie the step-up to a lasting cause. It is upside we have not credited in the base case. GROWTH CHECK. Earnings per share grew 1.4% in 2025 ($19.75 to $20.02). The base case assumes 1.4% in its first year, not more. BASE CASE: $268 PER SHARE. Earnings start at $14.16, grow 1.4% in year one and then 3% a year through year 10, reaching about $18.73. Growth is funded by keeping part of each year's profit (about 23%, which is 3% divided by a return on tangible equity of roughly 13% on the normal earnings level and about $110 of tangible book value per share) and paying out the rest. We credit this growth because it is the output of a process the bank has run for years from its own cash: tangible book value per share rose from $66.11 at the end of 2020 to $107.56 at the end of 2025, and the bank absorbed a credit-loss year in 2020 along the way. After year 10 we assume earnings stay flat at about $18.73 and are fully paid out; the franchise is a structural feature (a very large deposit and card base and a global corporate bank) that keeps operating, but we credit no growth we cannot name. Left out: further rate increases, market or share gains, margin expansion, new products and share buybacks as a source of growth (buybacks spend the same cash that is already counted as paid out). Business value $268, less debt to subtract $0 (bank funding is part of the operating business), leaves $268 per share. BULL CASE: $451 PER SHARE. Earnings start at the 2025 level of $20.02 and grow 5% a year for 10 years, reaching about $32.61, then stay flat. Retention of 25% of profit funds that growth at the 20% return on tangible equity the bank earned in 2025. 5% is below the roughly 11% a year at which earnings per share compounded between 2019 and 2025. Business value $451, debt to subtract $0, leaves $451 per share. BEAR CASE: $175 PER SHARE. A credit downturn like 2020 holds earnings to $8.88 per share for two years. Net charge-offs are already rising (about $9.8 billion in 2025, up $1.2 billion, led by wholesale and Card Services), and a 2025 provision of $14.2 billion included a $4.4 billion addition to reserves. After that, earnings settle at $10.72, the 2019 level, roughly 47% below 2025, with no growth and everything paid out. Business value $175, debt to subtract $0, leaves $175 per share. This case is a bad credit and rate environment, not a failure of the bank; we did not include a forced government-led recapitalization because we can point to no evidence for one. The bank ended 2025 with a common equity tier 1 ratio of 14.6% (15.7% a year earlier) and a 2.5% stress capital buffer requirement. WHAT CHANGED. Our previous estimates were $112, $199 and $262. The new figures are higher mainly because we now discount every company's future earnings at one uniform 6% rate rather than the 10% to 11% used before; the normal earnings level is actually lower than before (about $14.16 versus $16.67). Those moves partly offset each other, which is why the two sets of numbers differ by this much. WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS WRONG. If interest rates fall much further and credit losses stay elevated, earnings could sit below our bear case. If regulators require substantially more capital (the filing describes a proposed revision to the capital framework that has not been finalized), profits could be retained rather than paid out. On the other side, first-half 2026 earnings suggest the base case may be conservative. MARGIN-OF-SAFETY PRICE: $148 PER SHARE. That is about 45% below the base value and about 16% below the bear case, or roughly 1.4 times end-2025 tangible book value. A wide margin is warranted because the bank's earnings move with interest rates and the credit cycle and its balance sheet is highly leveraged.

Chart analysis
The five-year performance table in the 2025 annual report shows $100 invested in JPMorgan Chase stock at the end of 2020 (dividends reinvested) growing to $127.73 (2021), $111.64 (2022), $145.96 (2023), $210.58 (2024) and $289.18 (2025), a compound gain of roughly 24% a year. Over the same period the KBW Bank Index reached $196.02 and the S&P Financials Index $203.21, so the stock has shown clear relative strength against both peer groups. A chartist would describe a long, steady uptrend with one corrective year (2022, down about 12.6%), followed by three strong years of higher highs and higher lows (up about 31%, 44% and 37% in 2023, 2024 and 2025). The 2022 low and the 2023 breakout area would be viewed as major support. The main cautions are that the advance is extended well above its long-run trend, and that momentum readings after three large up years are stretched, which historically invites sharp pullbacks or sideways consolidation even inside an intact uptrend.
