Oportun is a consumer lender that makes small-dollar unsecured and secured personal loans and credit cards, mainly to people with thin or no credit files, and also offers savings and budgeting products. It earns money on the gap between what borrowers pay (portfolio yield of 33.1% in 2025) and what it loses to defaults and pays its own lenders. In 2025 it earned $956.7 million of revenue, paid $231.5 million of interest (an average cost of debt of 8.2%), and wrote off $325.5 million of loans net of recoveries, a 12.0% net charge-off rate, the same as in 2024. Loans are concentrated in California (34% of the loan balance at the end of 2025), Texas (25%), Florida (11%), Illinois (6%) and New Jersey (4%). How we measured earnings. The cash flow statement of a lender flatters it: loan principal that borrowers fail to repay is added back as a non-cash charge, while the money lent out to replace it appears under investing activities. Operating cash flow was $413.4 million in 2025 against net income of only $25.2 million. To keep the loan book from shrinking, the lost principal has to be re-lent, so we deduct the fair-value charge ($319.3 million in 2025, close to the $325.5 million of net charge-offs) along with stock compensation, working-capital swings and maintenance capital spending (mostly capitalized software). On that basis, owner earnings per diluted share were $6.44 (2019, a distorted IPO-year share count), -$1.80 (2020), $2.29 (2021), $1.24 (2022), -$6.24 (2023), -$1.93 (2024) and $1.26 (2025). One line, 'Other, net', added $55.1 million to 2025 operating cash flow and we could not fully trace it from the filing; we left it in. Earlier years are not comparable because loans were not carried at fair value before 2018. What we treated as normal earnings. The median of 2021 through 2025 is $1.24 per share, essentially the same as 2025's $1.26, so we used about $1.25 per share. Losses in 2020, 2023 and 2024 show that results swing with credit quality. 2021 was flattered by a 6.8% charge-off rate that the company itself attributes to pandemic stimulus and tight lending, so it is treated as above-normal rather than the new base. Owner earnings growth in 2025 cannot be expressed as a percentage because 2024 was negative; revenue fell 4.5% in 2025 and again in the first half of 2026 (about $462 million versus $470 million), so year-one growth in the base case is zero. Base case, $11.8 per share. Owner earnings stay flat at about $1.25 per share for ten years, then fade to zero over the following ten. We credit no growth: revenue is shrinking, loan yield and losses are essentially unchanged, and the 36% cap the company has placed on APRs for new loans since August 2020 limits repricing. Management's target of a 9% to 11% charge-off rate is a goal, not something achieved, so it is left out. We do not credit new secured-loan states or products for the same reason. The 20-year fade reflects that a lender that has originated loans through several cycles keeps earning for a long time, but nothing in the filing supports assuming it beyond that. Bear case, -$6.3 per share. Results repeat the 2020 through 2025 record, which averaged -$0.86 per share a year, including two years at -$1.8 and -$1.9 and one at -$6.2. Continued at that average for ten years, the business consumes more than it earns, and the shares would be worth less than nothing: the company appears to owe more than the loans are worth, by roughly $6 per share. Heavy dependence on borrowed money (a $231.5 million annual interest bill against $405.8 million of net revenue after credit charges in 2025) is what makes this outcome plausible. Equity holders are not personally liable for that shortfall, so it should be read as a strong warning rather than a literal loss beyond the shares. Bull case, $15.0 per share. Owner earnings average $1.60 per share, the average of the three positive recent years (2021, 2022 and 2025), for ten years, then fade over ten. This needs no improvement in credit beyond what has already occurred and no growth. What could make this wrong. Share count has risen from about 27 million in 2020 to about 49 million in mid-2026 through issuance and stock compensation, which we do not project forward; further dilution would reduce per-share value. A Mexican tax authority claim for 2017 to 2019 could cost up to $5.1 million and is not accrued. The company's net charge-off rate held at 12.0% in both 2024 and 2025; if it fell toward its 9% to 11% target while the yield holds, earnings would be higher than our base case, and a deterioration like 2023 would be worse than our bear case for that year. We could not compute owner earnings for the first half of 2026 from the quarterly report; operating cash flow was $213.0 million against $205.5 million a year earlier, and net income was $10.9 million versus $16.6 million, not enough to move our normal level. The margin-of-safety price of $4.5 sits at a large discount to the base case because the loss record, borrowed-money dependence and a small company size leave little room for error.
