Matrix Service is a Tulsa-based engineering and construction contractor. It builds specialty storage tanks and terminals (LNG, natural gas liquids, ammonia and crude), LNG peak-shaving plants and power-delivery work for utilities, and process, refinery and mining facilities, almost entirely in the United States with some work in Canada. Revenue in the year to June 2026 was $874 million, up 14% from $769 million. The cash flow statement makes this business look much better than it is. Operating cash flow was $117 million in fiscal 2025 and $73 million in fiscal 2024, but almost all of that was customers paying ahead of work: billings in excess of costs rose by $152 million and $86 million in those two years. That money is owed back in work and runs off as projects are built, which is exactly what happened in fiscal 2026, when operating cash fell to $7 million. Stripping out those timing swings and charging stock compensation ($7-9 million a year) and the capital spending needed to keep the business running, the underlying cash earnings over the last ten years were: about $9 million (2017), $17 million (2018), $31 million (2019), $8 million (2020), then losses of $17 million (2021), $59 million (2022), $37 million (2023), $25 million (2024) and $26 million (2025), and a small positive $4 million in fiscal 2026. Goodwill write-offs ($38.5 million in 2020, $18.3 million in 2022, $12.3 million in 2023) and property-sale gains ($33 million in 2022) were excluded as one-off, non-operating items. Over the full decade, which covers the 2017-2019 upswing, the 2020 shutdown and the long energy-capital-spending trough that followed, the median year is a loss of roughly $7 million. These figures replace our earlier ones, which counted customer advances as earnings and are not comparable. There is a genuine improvement under way. Fiscal 2026 ended with a net loss of only $2.6 million against $29.5 million the year before, and segment margins rose: Storage and Terminal Solutions to 6.1% from 4.0%, Utility and Power Infrastructure to 11.1% from 6.8%. Against that, the order book shrank. Backlog fell from $953 million to $641 million, partly because management removed two previously booked awards ($197 million of adjustments), and new awards of $642 million covered only about 0.7 times revenue. Revenue in fiscal 2027 is therefore likely to come in below fiscal 2026, at levels ($730-770 million) where the company lost money in 2024 and 2025. Last year's cash earnings went from a $26 million loss to a $4 million profit; our base case does not assume that improvement continues into fiscal 2027, because the backlog says otherwise. The company has no borrowings; its $65 million asset-backed credit line was unused at June 2026 and requires $25 million of cash to be kept restricted. It holds $223 million of unrestricted cash, but $300 million of billings in excess of costs and $109 million of payables sit against it. Netting all operating assets and liabilities, the cash beyond what is owed in work is about $73 million; because contractors of this kind normally need some working capital of their own, we credit $50 million (about $1.77 a share) as genuinely surplus in every case. Base case: fiscal 2027 cash earnings of about minus $8 million and fiscal 2028 about minus $3 million as the smaller backlog is worked through, then a return to the roughly $4 million a year achieved in fiscal 2026 on similar revenue, held flat with no growth credited. The LNG, power and mining pipeline management describes is a prospect, not contracted work, so it is left out. The business is worth about $49 million on that path; with no debt and $50 million of surplus cash, about $99 million, or $3.50 a share. Bear case: a repeat of the downturn the company has actually just lived through. From fiscal 2021 to 2025 it lost a cumulative $164 million in cash earnings as energy and industrial clients cut capital spending after the 2020 shutdown and legacy projects were written down. The bear case runs a slightly shorter version: losses of $10, $30, $40, $35 and $25 million over five years, then breakeven, with nothing beyond. That consumes about $140 million, roughly all of today's $142 million of shareholders' equity. The business is worth about minus $120 million on that path; adding back $50 million of surplus cash leaves about minus $70 million, or minus $2.46 a share. In plain terms, on this path the company would spend more than all of the cash it does not owe to customers and would come out the other side with almost no equity. Because there is no debt, survival is not in question in this case; the value of the shares is. Bull case: the company's own demonstrated levers work. Revenue returns toward $1 billion on LNG storage and peak-shaving awards already being bid, and margins hold near fiscal 2026 segment levels, giving cash earnings of about $18 million a year from year four (about 2% of revenue, below the $31 million it earned in fiscal 2019 on $1.4 billion). The business is worth about $272 million, plus $50 million surplus cash, about $11.37 a share. How sure are we of the earnings level? Not very. In ten years the business has produced positive cash earnings in five, losses in five, and has not earned more than $31 million in any year. Fixed-price construction contracts mean a single badly bid project can erase a year's profit, and the company has written off three acquisitions and lowered recovery expectations on a legacy storage project as recently as fiscal 2025. The worst plausible outcome is a long trough in energy and industrial capital spending combined with a loss-making large project; the absence of debt means the company would survive that, but its equity would be consumed. The things we are most likely to be wrong about are whether fiscal 2026's margin improvement holds as revenue falls, and whether backlog recovers; if margins slip back to fiscal 2024-25 levels on lower revenue, the shares are worth around zero, and if the LNG awards arrive, the bull case is reachable. While waiting, the company pays no dividend. The margin-of-safety price is $1.25. That price is covered by the surplus cash alone, so it assigns nothing to the operating business, and from that price the base case implies well over a 20% annual return within five or six years. Only at a price backed by cash rather than by earnings does the record of this business, with a full-cycle median result that is a loss, justify the risk.

Owner's earnings per share by fiscal year, most recent first. Tap a row to see how that figure was calculated, including the source filing.

Sales geography
United States (South, especially Texas and the Gulf Coast; West, including a mining project in the western United States; Midwest; Northeast) and Canada
Historical growth strategy
Organic growth through bidding for engineering, fabrication, construction and maintenance contracts in storage tanks and terminals (LNG, NGL, ammonia), utility and power infrastructure (LNG peak shaving, power delivery) and process and industrial facilities (refining, chemicals, mining), supplemented in the past by small acquisitions, several of which were later written off.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a long-term downtrend from the 2014 highs above $20 into a multi-year base in the mid-single digits through the 2020-2023 losses, followed by a recovery that carried the shares into the low-to-mid teens during 2025-2026. The recovery would read as a series of higher lows, but the stock has repeatedly failed below its old highs and remains volatile around earnings and backlog announcements; a technician would want to see the prior resistance cleared on volume before calling a new uptrend, and would treat a break of the recent higher lows as a return to the old range.
