Materion Corporation makes advanced engineered materials used in semiconductors, aerospace and defense, industrial, automotive, energy and medical products. It runs four segments: Performance Materials (beryllium and other specialty alloys, plus a beryllium ore mine and refinery it has operated in Utah for decades), Electronic Materials (sputtering targets, precious metals and other thin-film materials mainly for chip makers), Precision Optics (infrared optics and coatings), and a smaller residual segment. The company has been in continuous operation since its 1931 incorporation, and in 2020 it materially expanded scale and capability by acquiring the H.C. Starck Advanced Materials tantalum and niobium business. We value the company on the cash it actually generates for owners: operating cash flow after removing the effect of working-capital swings, stock-based compensation, and the portion of capital spending needed just to replace worn-out plant (as opposed to spending aimed at growth). Materion's capital spending, including development of its Utah mine, has run noticeably higher relative to sales since the 2020 acquisition (roughly 5.5% of revenue versus about 2.6% before), and we have treated that higher, ongoing level as a real and lasting cost of running the larger business rather than assuming it fades away. A sizable Precision Optics goodwill and asset write-down in 2024, tied to a more cautious view of a key strategic partnership in that segment, was a non-cash charge that does not reduce the cash-based earnings figure we use, but it is a real signal about that segment's near-term prospects and is reflected in our downside case. On this basis, normalized owner earnings for the business today are about $2.89 per share, based on the middle of the last five years' results (2021 through 2025, the period since the H.C. Starck acquisition reshaped the company). Actual owner earnings grew about 11% in 2025 versus 2024, but that partly reflects a rebound from a weak, capital-heavy 2023; we assumed a more conservative 5% growth rate to start our base case, roughly matched to the 8% year-over-year increase in the company's order backlog (which stood at $579 million at the end of 2025, enough to cover about four months of sales). Our base case assumes revenue and earnings power grow at a mid-single-digit pace for several years, supported by that backlog and by diversified end markets, before settling into low-single-digit growth, and we see no evidence the underlying business stops there — Materion's multi-decade record as an integrated beryllium producer, combined with its spread across several industries, supports the cash flow continuing indefinitely at a modest pace beyond our ten-year forecast. That base case is worth roughly $88 per share today, discounted at a flat 6%. The bear case assumes a repeat of the kind of cyclical correction the company saw in 2023 (when a semiconductor-industry slowdown cut revenue and, combined with elevated capital spending, pushed owner earnings sharply lower), continued softness in the Precision Optics segment, and only slow, partial recovery and growth thereafter — worth about $52 per share. The bull case assumes the current, elevated pace of mine-development and plant investment finishes on schedule and capital spending eases back toward its historical share of revenue, while the semiconductor end market keeps recovering as it did in 2025 — worth about $135 per share. Given the spread between the bear and base cases, the margin-of-safety price builds in a meaningful margin of safety, at around $65 per share, rather than sitting at our estimate of full value. We are not aware of information in the filings that could not be reconciled to the cash flow statement; the arithmetic behind these figures ties out exactly to the reported operating cash flow in every year checked.
