Lightwave Logic develops electro-optic polymer materials, sold as its Perkinamine family. They are designed to be built into silicon photonics chips to make high-speed optical modulators for data communications. The company plans to earn money by supplying these materials, licensing its patents and collecting royalties once customers' devices go into production. Today it is essentially pre-commercial. Revenue in 2025 was $236,855. Of that, $106,855 came from its only license and material supply agreement, a four-year, royalty-bearing, non-exclusive deal signed in May 2023 that carries a minimum annual royalty. The other $130,000 was for completing the first phase of a joint development program with a customer, formalised in a memorandum of agreement signed in January 2026. The second phase is worth $200,000. The company says it does not expect significant revenue from volume production until 2027 at the earliest. It also says its customer design-win cycle usually takes 18 to 24 months. How we measured earnings. We measure the cash the business generates for its owners: operating cash flow with working-capital swings removed, minus stock-based pay, minus capital spending. Revenue is negligible, so we treat all equipment spending as a cost of keeping the business running. That includes 2017 to 2021 payments on equipment bought on credit. Stock-based pay counts as a real cost, and so do shares issued as commitment fees to an equity investor. In its 2025 annual report the company restated a $3.4 million stock-option charge for 2021 as an error, so we left it out of that year. On this basis the business has used cash in every one of the last ten years. The shortfall was about $4 million to $7 million a year through 2020. It was $15.9 million in 2021, $17.5 million in 2022, $23.4 million in 2023, $22.9 million in 2024 and $19.7 million in 2025, which is 15 cents a share. We judge the business from 2021 onward, when spending rose to its current scale. The median of those five years is a loss of about 16 cents a share. The 2025 shortfall was about 14% smaller than 2024's, but that did not last. In the first half of 2026 the business used about $13.4 million, and research spending in the second quarter was $3.9 million against $2.6 million a year earlier. The company also says it expects to spend about $2.4 million a month. None of our cases assumes spending falls below the 2025 level. What the shares are worth. The business uses cash rather than producing it, so its value to shareholders rests on the money it already holds, minus what it will spend. At June 30, 2026 it held $47.2 million in cash and $48.7 million in marketable securities. It has no debt and about $1.4 million of liabilities besides its building lease. There were 154.2 million shares outstanding. We give no value to future production revenue. The license and the joint development program are real, but neither discloses volumes, royalty rates or production commitments, and ten years of filings show no material revenue. This does not mean we expect the technology to fail. It means nothing in the filings lets us put a number on success. Bear case, about 5 cents a share ($0.05). Research spending keeps rising, the business loses about $35 million a year, the cash runs out in under three years and no production contract arrives. What is left is roughly the return earned on the cash before it is spent. Base case, about 6 cents a share ($0.06). Losses continue at the first-half 2026 pace of about $27 million a year. The cash lasts about three and a half years and development revenue stays small. Bull case, about 8 cents a share ($0.08). Spending holds at the 2025 level of about $20 million a year, which stretches the cash to nearly five years. The license and development work continue, but without disclosed terms they add nothing we can measure. Once today's cash is spent, the company would have to sell more shares, as it has done repeatedly. Financing brought in $56.9 million in 2025, and shares outstanding rose by about 8 million in the first half of 2026. Unless the technology is earning real contracts by then, that funding dilutes existing holders. What would prove this wrong. A signed volume supply or royalty agreement with disclosed quantities would give us something to value, and so would royalties above the minimum from the 2023 licensee. Either could raise our estimate many times over. On the other side, the four-year license runs only to about mid-2027 unless it is renewed. The margin-of-safety price is about 3 cents a share ($0.03). That is below our worst case, because every case spends the cash that supports the value.
