Kinder Morgan owns and operates energy infrastructure. Its reportable segments include Natural Gas Pipelines (interstate and intrastate pipelines, storage, gathering, processing, and LNG facilities), Products Pipelines (refined products, crude oil and condensate pipelines) and Terminals (liquids and bulk storage facilities). Much of its revenue comes from take-or-pay or minimum-volume contracts. At the end of 2025 the company reported about $5 billion of such fixed contracted revenue to be recognized in 2026, about $5 billion in 2027 and about $26 billion in 2028 and later. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove the swings in working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost ($68 million in 2025), and subtract only the part of capital spending needed to maintain the business, treating the rest as growth spending. On that basis, earnings to shareholders were about $1.18 per share in 2019, $1.25 in 2020, $2.33 in 2021, $1.84 in 2022, $1.32 in 2023, $1.36 in 2024 and $1.45 in 2025. We anchor on the median of 2019 through 2025, leaving out 2021, which comes to about $1.34 per share. Two adjustments matter. In 2023, operating cash flow included an $870 million inflow from deferred revenues, which we treated as timing and removed. In 2021, revenue rose sharply (about $4.9 billion), so our formula classified most of that year's capital spending as growth spending, leaving an unusually low maintenance figure; we regard that year as overstated and excluded it. Debt is not deducted separately, because interest paid is already inside operating cash flow. That leaves the case values above zero. Earlier years (2016 to 2018) are stored but not used in the anchor: those years carried heavy capital spending and preceded a major change in the business's scale and capital structure that we did not attempt to model. Growth. Earnings per share rose about 7% in 2025 (from $1.36 to $1.45). Our base case assumes no growth in the first year or after, which is below that recent pace. We do not credit growth from projects or expansion because we found no evidence in the filing of a quantified project backlog, and market expansion is not something we can point to as secured. The bull case credits 2.5% annual growth for ten years, below the roughly 3.6% annual rate of increase between 2019 and 2025, because that steady record is the only demonstrated repeatable growth we can name. Base case, about $18 per share. Earnings stay near $1.34 for 20 years, supported by pipeline and terminal assets, contracted revenue extending past 2028, and a long-term terminal services contract with prepaid fixed reservation charges running from 2035 to 2040. After that we assume earning power fades to zero over the following 20 years, because we cannot name what replaces it. Bear case, about $10 per share. Earnings fall to about $1.10 per share, below anything reported in 2019 through 2025, and hold that level for ten years before fading to zero over the next ten. Named pressures are the company's debt (about $31.8 billion of principal at the end of 2025, weighted average interest rate 5.59%, with $1.2 billion due within a year and refinancing costs that can rise), rising capital spending ($3.0 billion in 2025 versus $1.3 billion in 2021), and pending litigation, including a lawsuit by Freeport LNG Marketing seeking about $104 million over gas nominated during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021. Bull case, about $25 per share. Earnings begin from the 2025 level of $1.45 and grow 2.5% a year for ten years, then stay flat for twenty more years and fade to zero over the following ten. Six-month cash flow from operations through June 2026 was $3.45 billion versus $2.81 billion a year earlier, which is consistent with this case, but we did not raise the base earnings level on a single half-year, particularly since capital spending also rose ($1.79 billion versus $1.41 billion). What would make this wrong. The valuation would be too high if contracts are not renewed after their terms end, if maintenance spending is higher than our approach implies (2021's figure is a known distortion), or if stock compensation and debt costs rise. It would be too low if the company keeps earning more than $1.34 per share, as it did in 2025, or grows from projects we have not credited. The margin-of-safety price is about $10 per share, close to the bear case. Kinder Morgan is a stable, contract-backed business, but it is heavily leveraged, and the margin-of-safety price is set to hold up against a lower earnings level.
