Business condition attached to the margin of safety At least one additional quarter showing net sales (and China sales specifically) continuing to grow year over year, with gross margin holding at or above roughly 38% (the FY2025 level) rather than slipping back toward the 34.6% FY2024 trough.
IPG Photonics designs and manufactures fiber lasers and related laser systems used mainly in industrial materials processing — cutting, welding, marking, and cleaning metal and other materials — which made up about 86% of 2025 revenue, with smaller medical-device and advanced-applications businesses rounding out the rest. Its customers are industrial equipment makers and manufacturers worldwide, and China is by far its largest and most important single market, at 29% of 2025 sales, followed by the United States and Germany. The business has been through a difficult multi-year down-cycle. Revenue peaked at roughly $1.46 billion in 2021, then fell for three straight years to $977 million in 2024 as global industrial capital spending slowed and Chinese competitors expanded manufacturing and R&D capacity and cut prices to gain share — a dynamic the company has flagged as an ongoing risk to its pricing and market position. Gross margin fell from 42% in 2023 to 35% in 2024 before recovering to 38% in 2025. In 2025, revenue grew for the first time in four years (up 2.7%), led by a 19% rebound in China, though profitability has only partially recovered alongside it. Separately, and unrelated to the China competitive dynamic, IPG sold its Russian manufacturing subsidiary in August 2024 in response to Russia-Ukraine sanctions, having already shifted new investment away from Russia and Belarus toward Germany, the U.S., and Poland. That sale produced a roughly $198 million loss that drove a net loss for 2024, but it was a one-time, mostly non-cash accounting charge tied to exiting a legacy manufacturing footprint — it does not reduce the company's ongoing cash-generating capacity, and we have treated it accordingly rather than let it distort the underlying earnings level. To value the business we used owner earnings — cash generated from operations after stripping out swings in working capital and stock-based compensation pay, and after subtracting only the capital spending needed to sustain the current business (as opposed to capital spent to grow it). Owner earnings per share ranged from about $7.31 at the 2017 cyclical high down to under $1 in the recent 2024-2025 trough, and we anchored our valuation on the ten-year median of about $4.71 per share, which we think fairly represents the business across a full industrial cycle rather than either its peak or its current trough. We then built three scenarios, each a continuous story rather than a percentage adjustment to the middle case: - Bear case ($15.40/share): starts from the depressed 2024-2025 earnings level and assumes continued Chinese pricing pressure keeps margins from recovering meaningfully, with owner earnings drifting modestly lower for several years before leveling off permanently at a low level. This reflects a world where the current down-cycle proves to be a structural, not cyclical, impairment of the business's economics. - Base case ($102.84/share): assumes the 2025 recovery — the return to revenue growth and the rebound in China — continues at a moderating pace over the next decade, with owner earnings growing in the high single digits early on and settling into the low single digits, but margins never fully return to their pre-downturn levels given the disclosed competitive pressure from Chinese laser makers. Earnings power is then treated as flat, not growing, beyond year ten, since we found no specific evidence to support further growth past that point. - Bull case ($170.27/share): assumes the recovery is stronger and more durable — consistent with the roughly 30% single-year earnings rebound the company achieved coming out of the 2020 downturn — helped by new growth areas the company has specifically pointed to, including its cleanLASER acquisition and additive manufacturing, plus the multi-decade trend of fiber lasers displacing older cutting and welding technologies on the basis of speed, precision and flexibility, which we treat as a durable, evidence-based source of a modest terminal growth rate. We did not build in any assumption of a general market or economic recovery; the cases above rest only on specific, named developments already visible in the company's own results and disclosures. Given how wide the gap is between the bear and base outcomes — reflecting real uncertainty about whether the current China-driven margin pressure is temporary or permanent — the margin-of-safety price carries a large discount to our base-case estimate, and ideally assumes the 2025 recovery has been confirmed by another quarter or two of growing sales and stable-to-improving margins, rather than resting on a single year's data. All figures in this analysis reflect our own independently computed estimates of value; nothing here reflects the current market price of the shares.
