HA Sustainable Infrastructure Capital finances energy-transition projects (solar, wind, storage, efficiency and related real assets) through loans, equity-method investments and securitizations. At the end of 2025 it managed about $16.1 billion of assets, of which $7.6 billion sits on its own balance sheet across more than 700 transactions with a weighted average remaining life of about 16 years. It closed roughly $4.3 billion of new transactions in 2025 and $2.3 billion in 2024. Since January 1, 2024 it has been taxed as an ordinary corporation rather than a REIT. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, subtract the swings in working capital (receivables held for sale, accrued interest, payables) and subtract stock compensation, which is a real cost. The company has no meaningful plant or equipment spending, so no maintenance spending is deducted; the money it deploys into loans and investments is discussed below. On this basis owner earnings per diluted share were about $0.26 (2016), $0.19 (2017), $0.85 (2018), $0.34 (2019), $1.02 (2020), $0.16 (2021), $0.64 (2022), $0.26 (2023), roughly zero (2024) and $0.94 (2025). The series is lumpy because much of the company's income is booked as non-cash equity-method income and securitization gains, and the cash arrives through investing activities. The 2025 annual report says about $151 million of the 2025 jump in operating cash flow came from equity-method distributions now being treated as operating rather than as a return of capital. 2024 is therefore an artificially low year and we exclude it. We measure from 2020, when the company shifted heavily into large equity-method investments (about $886 million that year versus $152 million in 2019). The median of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025 is $0.64 per share. First-half 2026 operating cash flow was $83.7 million versus $42.5 million a year earlier, which is consistent with the higher 2025 level but is not enough on its own to lift our starting point. Growth. Latest-year owner earnings per share were $0.94 against roughly zero the year before, a comparison distorted by the distribution reclassification, so it is not a usable growth rate. We assume no growth in year 1 and none afterward. The company has originated new business every year and collected about $706 million of principal on receivables in 2025 against about $1.04 billion of new receivables purchased, so collections alone can replace the run-off of the existing book. We credit that replacement, which keeps the earnings level in place, but we do not credit growth in per-share earnings: expansion is funded largely by issuing debt and new shares (about $237 million of stock issued in 2025, and diluted shares rose from about 109 million in 2023 to about 138 million in 2025), so it does not by itself raise value per share. Forecast origination volume, new asset classes and any margin gains are left out. Base case, about $8.80 per share. Owner earnings stay at $0.64 per share. We credit the existing book for its roughly 16-year remaining life and the company's twelve-year record of reinvesting collections for a further stretch, and we stop crediting the stream after 30 years. Discounted at 6%, that is about $8.80. Bear case, about $2.60 per share. The company is highly leveraged: total liabilities were $5.5 billion against $2.7 billion of equity at the end of 2025, including $3.5 billion of senior notes, and cash interest paid rose from $138 million in 2023 to $173 million in 2024 and $228 million in 2025. In this case owner earnings drop back to the 2023 level of $0.26 per share, financing costs keep absorbing the return on new assets, the company does not replace run-off assets on acceptable terms, and the stream ends when the current book matures in about 16 years. That is worth about $2.60. Bull case, about $15.70 per share. Owner earnings hold at the 2025 level of $0.94 per share and the same collections-funded reinvestment continues indefinitely. Over the ten years through 2025 realized losses on managed assets averaged only 0.08% a year, which supports the view that the book keeps performing. Discounted at 6% that is about $15.70. No credit is given for new-market expansion or for a stronger year in 2026. What could make this wrong. The main uncertainty is the cash-flow basis: because so much economic return is classified outside operating cash flow, our starting level may understate what the business really earns, and the reclassification of distributions may change the measure again. On the other side, the company depends on capital markets to refinance its debt and to fund new investments, and the large equity-method investees (over $20 billion of investee assets) are not consolidated, so their leverage sits outside the reported balance sheet. Debt is not subtracted from the value because the cash flows already reflect interest paid; leverage is reflected in the bear case.
