Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings show two consecutive fiscal years of narrowing losses with no single customer exceeding roughly 20% of revenue, confirming the FY2025 improvement is durable rather than a one-year rebound tied to one customer.
Codexis is a protein-engineering company that designs and licenses custom enzymes (biocatalysts) used mainly in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and separately invests in a group of novel biotherapeutic and nucleic-acid enzyme programs. Revenue comes from selling these enzymes as products, from R&D and licensing fees paid by collaboration partners, and from ongoing royalties, split roughly 62% Americas, 25% Asia-Pacific and 13% Europe/Middle East/Africa in 2025. Over the last decade the company has never converted its revenue into positive owner earnings - cash generated by operations, after removing the effect of swings in working capital and stock-based compensation, and after funding the capital spending needed simply to keep the business running, has been negative in every one of the last ten fiscal years. Revenue itself has been extremely uneven: it roughly doubled from 2020 to 2022 as one customer grew to 56% of total sales, then nearly halved in 2023 when that relationship unwound, falling further into 2024 before recovering in 2025. Concentration has not gone away - it has simply moved to a different customer, which supplied 40% of 2025 revenue, up from 18% the year before. 2025 did show real improvement: revenue grew 19% and cost discipline from a restructuring effort more than offset it, cutting administrative costs 15% and narrowing the operating cash deficit by roughly $15 million versus 2024. The company also carries a secured term loan of up to $40 million (three-quarters drawn so far), which adds leverage but also extends cash runway. Because the business has never sustained positive owner earnings, valuing it requires being honest that a good outcome is not yet proven, only recently glimpsed. Base case: the 2025 pattern of modest revenue growth and continued cost discipline persists, gradually closing the earnings gap and reaching roughly break-even around year seven, then modest profitability, supported over the long run by a licensing platform the company has operated commercially for more than 15 years. On this path the shares are worth on the order of $0.31 today. Bear case: the customer relationship that now supplies 40% of revenue shrinks or is lost - something this company has already experienced once, with a different customer, in 2023 - sending revenue and owner earnings sharply negative again for several years while the term loan remains a fixed obligation. Under this case the shares are worth meaningfully less than zero, on the order of negative $4 to $5 per share, reflecting that the business would likely need continued external financing to survive rather than create value for today's owners. Bull case: the 2025 improvement continues and broadens - revenue keeps growing without depending on any single customer, and the cost base stays disciplined - carrying the company to sustained profitability within four to five years and roughly $3.90 per share of value today. Given the base case is barely positive and the bear case is meaningfully negative, price alone does not create a margin of safety here. The margin-of-safety price depends on at least two more years confirming that the 2025 improvement is durable and that no single customer dominates revenue, and even then carries a deep discount given how wide the range of plausible outcomes is.
