Barings BDC is a publicly traded lender. It is externally managed by Barings and mostly makes senior secured loans to mid-sized, private-equity-backed companies. It also holds some equity and has a European and Australia/New Zealand book alongside its U.S. loans. It is required to pay out nearly all its income as dividends. Most loans carry floating interest rates. The shares' worth therefore comes down to how much cash income the loan book keeps producing after credit losses. It does not depend on growth. How we measured earnings. The usual method starts from operating cash flow. For a lender like this that is not a useful guide, because the cash spent buying loans and the cash received when loans are repaid both run through operating cash flow. In 2025 it showed +$160.5 million, in 2021 it showed -$396.6 million, and neither number says anything about earning power. We used net investment income instead. That is interest and fees received, less interest on borrowings, management and incentive fees, and other costs. We then deducted interest paid in kind, meaning interest added to loan balances rather than received in cash. It was $30.3 million in 2025 and $26.2 million in 2024. There is no stock compensation and no meaningful capital spending. Per share on that basis, earnings were $0.73 in 2021, $1.01 in 2022, $0.96 in 2023, $1.03 in 2024 and $0.87 in 2025. 2021 is before the large 2022 merger, so we used 2022-2025 to describe the business today. The 2023-2024 peak was helped by high short-term interest rates. Since then, 2025 and the first half of 2026 have both come in at about $0.86-0.87 per share annualized. Net investment income was $56.8 million in the first half of 2026 against $57.4 million a year earlier, and cash-basis income fell roughly 8%. We therefore anchor at about $0.87, not the higher median of the whole window. Credit losses. Net investment income does not include loan write-downs. Over 2022-2025 it totaled about $502 million, while the actual increase in net assets was about $345 million. That gap of roughly $157 million, about 31% of income, is realized and unrealized loan losses. The filings show a steady run of loans placed on non-accrual, meaning interest is no longer being recognized. Named borrowers include Acogroup, Bariacum, Biolam, Canadian Orthodontic Partners, GPNZ, Polymer and RA Outdoors. This is a recurring cost of the business, so the cases carry it. Growth. Earnings growth was -15% in 2025. We assume about -5% in the first year, which is above that trailing rate. The reason is that the first half of 2026 was nearly flat with the prior year and the second quarter of 2026 net investment income of $30.5 million matched the prior year's $30.6 million. The steep drop is therefore already past. We credit no growth after that. Nothing locks in a larger portfolio or higher rates, and the company pays out its income instead of retaining it. We also did not credit any recovery in interest rates or any new loan products. Bear case, $9.17 per share: earnings settle at about $0.55 a year and stay there. Floating rates stay lower and credit problems continue at or above the pace seen in 2022, when the net increase in net assets was only $4.7 million. Base case, $12.00 per share: earnings settle at about $0.72 a year and continue. That is the $0.87 anchor less roughly $0.15 a year for typical credit losses. The loan book keeps being replaced as loans are repaid, and the manager's record of stable net asset value, $11.05 at end of 2022 and $11.09 at end of 2025, supports it. Bull case, $15.33 per share: about $0.92 a year, nearly the 2023-2024 cash income with little loss drag. The manager's underwriting has to work better than the last four years indicate. Net asset value per share was $11.09 at the end of 2025, so base value is close to book value. That fits a lender earning roughly its dividend after credit costs. Note that the dividend of $1.19 per share in 2025 was more than our cash-basis earnings after paid-in-kind interest, which is a reason not to treat the payout as guaranteed. Debt is not subtracted separately, because interest costs are already inside net investment income. We put leverage risk in the bear case. What would make this wrong: a sharp rise in loan defaults or in interest-in-kind interest would push value toward the bear case. Falling short-term rates would lower earnings further. Stable credit and rates holding near today's levels would move value toward the bull case.
