Business condition attached to the margin of safety Over two or three quarters, Akamai's cloud-computing buildout capital spending grows more slowly than that segment's revenue - i.e., the heavy 2023-2025 infrastructure spend is starting to convert into operating leverage rather than an open-ended capital need.
Akamai runs a global network that does three things for its customers: it speeds up and delivers web and video traffic (its original content delivery business), it protects applications, APIs and internal systems from attack (its security business, including the Guardicore product line for segmenting corporate networks), and, more recently, it rents out cloud computing capacity built substantially on its 2022 acquisition of Linode. Security is now the largest and most profitable of the three; content delivery is a mature, slowly shrinking business as pricing continues to fall in a commoditized market; cloud computing is the newest and fastest-growing piece, but also by far the most capital-hungry. We measure the cash the business actually generates for owners - operating cash flow, with the swings from customer collections and payables timing stripped out, real stock-based compensation treated as a genuine cost rather than added back, and only the portion of capital spending needed to keep the existing network running (as opposed to building new capacity) counted against earnings. On that basis, Akamai generated a median of about $3.08 per diluted share over 2019-2025, a period we chose because it reflects the company as it exists now - diversified across delivery, security and compute - rather than its older, delivery-only years. That median happens to sit almost exactly at the actual 2025 figure, which gives some confidence it's a fair description of the current run rate. Two accounting judgments matter here. First, stock-based compensation has grown from about 6% of revenue in 2022 to nearly 11% in 2025 - a real and rising cost of running the business, not just a non-cash add-back, and we have treated it that way throughout. Second, capital spending (property and equipment plus capitalized software) has risen sharply, from $458 million in 2022 to $820 million in 2025, as Akamai builds out capacity for its cloud-computing push; we've treated most of that increase as growth investment rather than a charge against today's earnings, but a meaningful base level of ongoing network refresh is still deducted every year. Actual owner earnings per share fell about 6% in 2025 versus 2024. Akamai's own filing attributes most of this to timing of customer collections, one-time severance payments tied to a restructuring action taken in the third quarter of 2024, and unusually high tax payments - not a change in the underlying business. We gave partial credit to that explanation: our near-term outlook assumes earnings per share holds roughly flat rather than continuing to decline, but we did not assume a rebound to the faster growth rates of a few years ago, because the rising capital spending and stock compensation look like durable trends rather than one-time items. The base case assumes modest, low-single-digit annual growth in owner earnings over the next decade as security and compute growth offset the slow decline in legacy delivery, tempered by continued heavy capital spending. It's worth noting that roughly 60% of this case's value rests on what Akamai earns beyond the next ten years; we think a global network with long-standing enterprise security relationships can sustain a slow-growing, modestly capital-light business at that point, but that view - not a mechanical formula - is doing a lot of the work. The bear case assumes the delivery business erodes faster than expected, the cloud-computing buildout continues to require heavy spending without translating into proportionate growth, and competition from larger cloud providers and dedicated security vendors compresses growth in what has been Akamai's best segment. It also reflects that Akamai carries roughly $4.1 billion of convertible notes maturing in 2027, 2029 and 2033; in a weaker scenario, cash that might otherwise fund share buybacks is needed to refinance or repay that debt, which matters more per share as owner earnings soften. Under this case, owner earnings per share drifts lower for most of the next decade before leveling off. The bull case assumes security keeps growing at a healthy clip as enterprises keep adopting application, API and Zero Trust protection, and that the recent surge in compute-related capital spending starts paying off as utilization improves and growth outpaces the capital needed to support it - allowing owner earnings to compound at a high single-digit rate for several years, similar to Akamai's own experience earlier this decade. Putting these together, we estimate the shares are worth roughly $69 in our base case, with a bear case near $41 and a bull case near $98. Given a downside that isn't especially severe relative to the base case - Akamai is a profitable, diversified infrastructure business with sticky, contract-based security revenue - the margin-of-safety price carries a moderate discount, around $51 per share. The case strengthens if, over the next few quarters, the company shows its compute-related capital spending growing more slowly than compute revenue - evidence that the current buildout is a phase rather than a permanent drag on per-share value.
