Business condition attached to the margin of safety A full fiscal year in which stock-based compensation is below about 20% of revenue (it was about 23% in fiscal 2026) and owner earnings after that expense are clearly positive.
CrowdStrike sells the Falcon cybersecurity platform on subscription contracts, typically one to three years long. Revenue was $4.81 billion in the year ended January 31, 2026, up 22%, and contracted future revenue (remaining performance obligations) stood at $9.0 billion, about 51% of it due within twelve months. The business is real and growing. The question is how much of that revenue is left for shareholders after paying for growth. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow and remove the swings from customer prepayments and receivables, then deduct stock-based compensation as a genuine cost, and deduct only the maintenance part of capital spending. CrowdStrike capitalizes sales commissions and expenses them gradually; the amortization of those commissions is added back in cash flow even though new commissions are paid every year, so we treated the annual amortization ($449 million in fiscal 2026) as a recurring cost. On that basis owner earnings per share were about $(1.04) in fiscal 2023, $0.42 in fiscal 2024, $0.02 in fiscal 2025 and $(0.56) in fiscal 2026. Stock-based compensation is the swing factor: $1.10 billion in fiscal 2026, about 23% of revenue, and it has not fallen as a share of revenue in three years. The company reported an operating loss of $293 million in fiscal 2026, larger than the $116 million loss in fiscal 2025. We anchored on fiscal 2024 to 2026, when the business had reached its current scale, and the median of that window is essentially zero. Growth reconciliation. Revenue grew 22% in fiscal 2026 and reached $2.86 billion in the first half of fiscal 2027, up about 26%. Owner earnings did not grow in fiscal 2026 (they fell), so no earnings growth rate can be carried forward. The base case assumes revenue growth of 16% in year one, below the trailing 22%, tapering to 5% by year ten. Bear case: $0 per share. Revenue is held to what contracts already secure, and stock-based compensation and commission costs keep consuming all of the cash the business produces, as they did in fiscal 2026. Named risks include the July 19, 2024 Falcon update incident, which the company says has caused delays in creating sales opportunities and longer sales cycles, and a passenger-airline class action now on appeal in the Fifth Circuit. The shareholder class action over the incident was dismissed and closed in January 2026. We do not assign a negative value because the company carries only modest interest costs (about $28 million a year). Base case: $4.6 per share. Revenue keeps growing from the $9.0 billion contracted backlog and from the land-and-expand pattern the company has run for nine years, at rates below the 22% it achieved, and owner earnings sit at about 1% of revenue. That is above the three-year median but consistent with the company turning profitable on a net-income basis in both quarters of the first half of fiscal 2027 ($33 million for the half, versus a $174 million loss a year earlier). After year ten we hold owner earnings flat for ten more years, because subscription contracts renew and no named driver supports growth beyond that; we assume nothing after that. Bull case: $21.3 per share. Revenue growth starts at 20% and tapers to 6%, and owner earnings reach 4% of revenue, roughly the level achieved in fiscal 2024 (3.3%) plus modest further improvement as growth in stock compensation slows. The same ten-year flat tail applies. What we left out. We give no credit for margin expansion beyond levels the company has already shown, for new products or share gains, or for the company's own targets. The $5.2 billion of cash on the balance sheet is not added on top, because the interest it earns already flows through cash flow. Most of our value therefore depends on stock compensation eventually shrinking relative to revenue; if it continues at 23% of revenue, the shares are worth little on the earnings the business has actually delivered to owners. The maintenance-versus-growth split of capital spending and the treatment of sales commissions are our judgements and move the result materially; without the commission adjustment, fiscal 2026 owner earnings would have been about $1.24 per share.
