Palo Alto Networks sells cybersecurity: next-generation firewalls and a growing range of subscriptions for cloud security, security operations, AI security and, since early 2026, identity security and observability. In the year to July 31, 2026 revenue was $11.48 billion, of which $9.20 billion came from subscription and support contracts that typically run one to five years and $2.28 billion from products. At year-end customers had signed for $21.2 billion of revenue not yet delivered, up from $15.8 billion a year earlier. Sales go through channel partners, and two distributors each handled 15% of revenue. The big change this year was acquiring other companies. Palo Alto closed Chronosphere (observability, $3.0 billion, January 29, 2026) and CyberArk (identity security, $21.1 billion, February 11, 2026, paid with $2.3 billion in cash and 112 million new shares) plus smaller deals. Shares outstanding rose to 815 million from 668 million a year earlier. After closing, the acquired businesses brought in $930 million of revenue and an operating loss of $797 million, including amortization of acquired intangibles, deal costs and stock-based pay. Because the combined company is a different business, we measure earning power from it rather than averaging older years. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow and strip out three things that would flatter it. First, cash customers pay up front for multi-year subscriptions: deferred revenue grew by $1.2 billion in fiscal 2026 alone. That cash is real, but the service is still owed, so we count revenue as earned, not as billed. Second, stock-based pay, $1.77 billion in fiscal 2026 or about 15.5% of revenue, is treated as the real cost it is. Third, sales commissions and office rent are counted as costs as they are expensed, even though their cash moves on a different schedule. We add back amortization of acquired intangibles (about $1.08 billion scheduled for next year) and a $562 million non-cash loss from remeasuring CyberArk's convertible notes, because those reflect purchase prices already paid rather than the cost of running the business. Acquired technology does age; we rely on the company's own research spending, $2.55 billion in fiscal 2026 and fully charged against earnings, to replace it, and we assume no growth after year 10. On that basis the business earned about $1.19 billion in fiscal 2026, up from $755 million in fiscal 2025 and $662 million in fiscal 2024. Before fiscal 2023 it earned nothing on this measure. Fiscal 2026 was helped by unusually low cash taxes ($199 million versus $505 million the year before), weighed down by one-off deal and severance costs, and included CyberArk for less than six months. After adjusting for those items and spreading the result over roughly 830 million diluted shares, our starting point is about $1.30 per share. All three cases use the same 6% discount rate. Base case: $53.01 per share. Revenue grows about 14% next year, matching the growth of the business excluding the two large acquisitions in fiscal 2026 and supported by the $21.2 billion of signed contracts, then slows steadily to 7% by year 10. Earnings margins widen from about 9% to 14% as CyberArk's losses are absorbed and stock pay resumes its slow decline as a share of revenue: it fell from 15.6% in fiscal 2023 to 13.4-14.0% in fiscal 2024-2025 before the acquisitions pushed it back up. Earnings then hold flat for another ten years on the strength of the recurring subscription base and the research engine, and fade to zero over the following decade. Bear case: $19.02. Growth slows to 8% and then 3%. Margins stay near the roughly 8% of fiscal 2023-2025 because the acquired businesses keep losing money, the large public cloud providers bundle their own security, identity and observability tools (a risk the company names), and cash taxes return to earlier levels. Continued stock-funded acquisitions dilute holders by about 1% a year. Earnings hold for five years after year 10 and are gone by year 25. The company holds $7.9 billion of cash and investments against about $1.1 billion of principal outstanding on the CyberArk convertible notes, so debt does not drive this case. Bull case: $98.39. Growth starts near the 17% pace of the combined company on a full-year basis (pro forma revenue of $12.31 billion versus $10.49 billion) and slows to 9%. Identity and observability are integrated into the platform, and margins reach 20% by year 10. Earnings then hold for fifteen years before fading. Margin-of-safety price: $32.00, about 40% below the base value. The margin is wide because the company has just spent about $24 billion on businesses that are currently losing money, relies heavily on stock pay, and competes where technology shifts quickly. Its operations in Israel grew substantially with CyberArk, and the company flags regional hostilities as a risk. What would make this wrong: CyberArk and Chronosphere failing to reach profitability, cash taxes returning to fiscal 2025 levels, bundled cloud-provider security taking share, or a slowdown in the $21.2 billion of signed contracts turning into revenue. On the upside, the company's cash collected in advance is left out of our earnings figure entirely. Not fully reconcilable from the filings: CyberArk's cash earnings before the close are not disclosed, so we estimated them from the combined pro forma figures (a $114 million net loss for fiscal 2026).
