Zebra Technologies makes the equipment that tracks things moving through warehouses, stores, hospitals and factories: rugged handheld mobile computers, barcode scanners, label and receipt printers, RFID readers and, more recently, machine vision cameras and touch-screen computers. About three-quarters of sales go through distributors, and three of them (each above 10% of sales) held 31%, 14% and 13% of receivables at the end of 2025. Customers replace this equipment on multi-year cycles, and the consumables, software and service contracts around it give the business a recurring base. Sales were $5.40 billion in 2025, up from $4.98 billion in 2024 but still below the $5.78 billion reached in 2022. How we measure earnings. We take operating cash flow, strip out swings in working capital, charge share-based pay as a real cost, and deduct the capital spending needed to keep the business running (capital spending is small, about 1.5% of sales). On that basis owner earnings per share over the last decade were: 2016 $2.73, 2017 $6.13, 2018 $10.01, 2019 $11.78, 2020 $10.76, 2021 $16.41, 2022 $9.99, 2023 $3.65, 2024 $11.12, 2025 $11.80. Two accounting judgements matter. First, the $225 million patent settlement with Honeywell, accrued in 2022, is charged when it was paid in cash ($180 million in 2023 and $45 million in 2024), which is why 2023 looks so poor. Second, amortisation of acquired intangibles (about $114 million in 2025) is added back as sunk acquisition cost; the decay of acquired technology is carried instead in the flat-to-fading later years of each case. Share-based pay jumped to $163 million in 2025 from $89 million; we charged it in full rather than assume it falls back. These figures replace our previously published series, which did not remove working-capital swings; the earlier per-share values are not comparable. The earnings level. Because the company carries debt, we value the business before interest and then subtract what it owes. Before interest, the business generated between $274 million (2023 trough) and $917 million (2021 peak) over 2018 to 2025, a full cycle that includes the pandemic surge and the 2023 distributor destocking. The median of that window is about $625 million; we start the base case at $660 million because the September 2025 Elo Touch acquisition added roughly $96 million of sales in its first quarter and around $400 million a year on a full-year basis, which is real, purchased earning power not in the historical median. 2016 and 2017 are excluded because the business then was still digesting the Motorola Enterprise purchase and carried very heavy interest costs. Owner earnings rose 6% in 2025 (before interest, 34%, flattered by recovery from the 2023-24 settlement and destocking years); the base case assumes 0% growth in 2026 then about 1.5% a year, below the trailing rate. Base case ($198 per share). Business cash flow of $660 million, growing roughly 1.5% a year for ten years to about $755 million, held flat thereafter. The growth credited is the long-run record: revenue rose from $3.6 billion in 2016 to $5.4 billion in 2025, partly from acquisitions, and the core hardware replacement cycle plus service contracts have shown an organic trend near that rate through a full cycle. Nothing is credited for RFID, machine vision or robotics gaining share, or for margin expansion. Business worth about $12.2 billion; debt, net of $157 million of cash at July 2026, about $2.6 billion; difference about $9.55 billion, or $198 per share on 48.1 million diluted shares. Bear case ($111 per share). Starts at $600 million and never grows. Inside the next ten years it includes a repeat of the 2022-2024 distributor destocking, the downturn this business has actually had: business cash flow falls 55% in the trough year (2023 fell from $917 million to $274 million, a 70% drop off the peak) and is only partly back the year after. After year ten earnings fade 2% a year, reflecting acquired technologies ageing and the risk that rugged handhelds lose ground to cheaper consumer devices. About $140 million extra is charged for refinancing the $1.575 billion Term Loan A and revolver, both maturing May 2027, on worse terms during a downturn. Business worth about $8.1 billion; debt about $2.77 billion; difference about $5.35 billion, or $111 per share. Interest of roughly $150 million a year is covered even in the trough year, so the case carries its own debt. Bull case ($258 per share). Starts at $710 million, reflecting a full year of Elo and the 2025 run-rate, and grows 3.5% a year for ten years, close to the company's own revenue growth record including the steady pattern of tuck-in acquisitions it has funded from cash flow. Flat thereafter. Business worth about $15.0 billion; less $2.6 billion of debt; about $12.4 billion, or $258 per share. Debt. At July 2026 borrowings were about $2.77 billion: the Term Loan A ($1.575 billion, about 5% floating), revolver and receivables facility borrowings (all maturing in 2027, so nearly $2.3 billion now shows as due within a year), and $500 million of 6.5% senior notes due June 2032. The company reported covenant compliance; leverage of under 4 times business cash flow is modest for a business of this kind, but the 2027 maturity wall is the main financing event to watch. The notes' 6.5% coupon is close enough to our measure that no adjustment was made. Margin of safety price: $95. We are moderately sure of the earnings level: a decade of filings shows the business earns $550-750 million before interest in ordinary years, but it has twice in ten years produced a single bad year far below that, and the distributor concentration means destocking hits hard and fast. The worst plausible outcome no case fully models is a destocking cycle coinciding with the 2027 refinancing; the structure would survive it, since the business stayed cash-positive before interest even in 2023 and the debt is mostly bank debt with a long relationship, but shareholders would likely see buybacks halted and dilution risk. If we are wrong about Elo's contribution and organic growth is nil, value sits near $150-160; if we are wrong about the cycle and it arrives early, the bear value of $111 is the floor we can defend. At $95 the business earns roughly $13-14 per share of owner earnings after interest in a normal year, a 14% cash yield, and the company has a long record of returning cash through buybacks ($568 million in the first half of 2026 alone, taking diluted shares from 51.2 to 48.1 million). On that, the base case implies better than 20% a year if value recovers toward the base within four to five years, and the bear case implies a small gain rather than a loss.

Sales geography
United States (about 49% of 2025 sales, all regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, West) and Canada; Europe, Middle East and Africa (about 32%, Germany largest); Asia-Pacific (about 11%); Latin America including Mexico and Brazil (about 7%). Roughly three-quarters of sales flow through distributors and resellers.
Historical growth strategy
Grows mainly by acquisition layered on a steady core of barcode printers, scanners and rugged mobile computers sold through distributors: the transformative $3.45 billion purchase of Motorola Solutions' Enterprise business in 2014, then a string of smaller deals (Xplore, Temptime, Reflexis, Fetch Robotics, Matrox Imaging) and in 2025 Photoneo and the $1.3 billion Elo Touch Solutions purchase, typically debt-funded and then paid down from cash flow before the next deal.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a long-term uptrend from the 2014-2016 lows to an all-time high above $600 in late 2021, followed by a sharp bear market that cut the price by more than half into a 2023 low in the low $200s. A recovery rally carried the shares back toward $400 in late 2024, but that rally stalled well below the 2021 peak and gave way to another leg down in 2025, leaving a pattern of lower highs. The stock has been range-bound between roughly the low $200s (support from the 2023 lows) and $400 (resistance from the 2024 high); a chartist would want to see a decisive break above that resistance before calling the multi-year downtrend over, and would treat a break of the 2023 lows as a bearish continuation signal.
