Business condition attached to the margin of safety An approved product with recurring sales, or partner funding that pays for most of the company's research spending.
Wave Life Sciences is a clinical-stage biotechnology company with no approved products. It develops RNA medicines on its PRISM platform: an obesity candidate (WVE-007), an RNA-editing candidate for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (WVE-006), a liver-disease candidate (WVE-008) and a Duchenne muscular dystrophy candidate (WVE-N531, for which it plans to file a New Drug Application in 2026). Its revenue comes only from collaborations, and most of it has been the accounting release of cash received years earlier: $108.3 million in 2024 (including $71.3 million from a Takeda collaboration that ended in October 2024) and $42.7 million in 2025. Revenue was $38.2 million in the first quarter of 2026, when the GSK license on WVE-006 ended, and $2.3 million in the second quarter. What we measured. On our owner-earnings basis (operating cash flow, less swings in working capital, less stock compensation, less maintenance capital spending), the company lost $203.9 million in 2025, or $1.21 per share, compared with $96.0 million, or $0.69 per share, in 2024. Stock compensation ($25.0 million in 2025) is treated as a real cost, and the deferred-revenue swings that distort cash flow are removed. The 2023 and 2024 losses look smaller partly because of non-cash Takeda revenue. The median over 2021 to 2025 is a loss of $1.21 per share, so there is no positive earnings level to build a valuation on. Cash and spending. At June 30, 2026 the company held $368.0 million of cash and $122.6 million of marketable securities, or $490.6 million in total (about $2.40 per share on roughly 204 million diluted shares). That is down from $602.1 million of cash at the end of 2025, which followed a $402.5 million share offering in December 2025. Operating cash use was $113.1 million in the first half of 2026, and operating expenses were $76.1 million in the second quarter, 24% above the same quarter a year earlier. What each case assumes. We credit value only where a contract or a demonstrated record supports it, and discount at 6%. Clinical results, approvals and the milestone payments that depend on them are not credited. GSK could owe up to $2.8 billion in milestones, and it has selected four programs with its costs prepaid, but payments arrive only if programs advance through development and sales, and none of that is secured. So we treat the cash as being spent on research with no evidenced return. - Bear ($0.11 per share): spending rises to about $300 million a year and no new partner money arrives. The cash runs out in early 2028, and shareholders keep only the small benefit of holding the cash before it is spent. - Base ($0.13 per share): spending of about $250 million a year. The second-quarter expenses annualize to about $304 million before non-cash charges and interest income, so this is our estimate of cash burn. The cash lasts about two years, to mid-2028. - Bull ($0.19 per share): the base case plus one new partnership for WVE-006, whose full rights returned from GSK in February 2026, worth as much as GSK's original $170.0 million upfront payment ($120.0 million cash and $50.0 million of equity) and received in the first year. The company has signed platform deals before, with Takeda in 2018 and GSK in 2022, but a third one has not happened yet. What we left out. The Duchenne filing planned for 2026 could lead to a sales-generating product, and four exon-skipping therapies for the disease have already been approved under the accelerated pathway. Early obesity data are encouraging: a single 240 mg dose of WVE-007 cut visceral fat by 9.4% (p=0.02) in a small first-in-human study. Regulatory feedback on a possible accelerated pathway for WVE-006 was expected in mid-2026. These are promising but unproven, and we cannot point to a signed contract or track record that turns them into revenue, so they carry no value here. What would make this wrong. The shares are largely an option on the pipeline, which we value at zero. An approval, strong obesity data at higher doses, or a large new partnership would make these figures too low, and the company holds about $2.40 per share of cash today. Spending well below our estimate would also lift the values. The margin-of-safety price is $0.05 because the outcome is very uncertain and our cases show almost nothing left for shareholders once the cash is used.

Sales geography
No product sales yet. All revenue is collaboration revenue from pharmaceutical partners: GSK under a 2022 agreement signed by Wave's United States and United Kingdom subsidiaries, and Takeda until that collaboration ended in October 2024. The filing gives no revenue split by country.
