Workday sells cloud software for human resources, including payroll and recruiting. It also sells software for finance, spending and planning. Its main competitors are Oracle and SAP. Subscriptions usually run three years or longer and generally cannot be cancelled. The price is set largely by how many employees the customer has. Revenue was $9.55 billion in the year to January 31, 2026, up 13%. Subscriptions were $8.83 billion of that. About 75% of revenue comes from the United States. At that date customers had signed $28.1 billion of subscription contracts not yet billed as revenue, up 12% on the prior year, and $8.8 billion of it falls due within twelve months. The filing notes that these contracts tend to be long, because finance systems are complex to put in place. Once a company has moved its payroll and financial records onto Workday, switching away is slow and risky. That is the core of the business's durability. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow and remove short-term swings in receivables, payables and billed-in-advance revenue. We then subtract stock-based pay as a real cost: $1.63 billion last year, about 17% of revenue. We also subtract the capital spending needed to keep the business running. We count sales commissions that Workday spreads over contract lives as a cost in the year they are paid. We treat spending on owned office buildings in earlier years as expansion rather than upkeep. On this basis the business lost money every year through fiscal 2023, even though its reported cash flow looked healthy, because stock pay absorbed it. It then turned: about $0.94 per share in fiscal 2024, $2.29 in fiscal 2025 and $4.23 ($1.14 billion) in fiscal 2026. The first half of fiscal 2027 was 17% ahead of the same half a year earlier. Stock pay grew 2% while revenue grew 13%. We therefore start from the fiscal 2026 level and do not average in the weaker earlier years. A large tax benefit booked in fiscal 2024 was an accounting release with no cash effect, and we ignore it. Workday has bought back heavily: $2.9 billion in fiscal 2026 and another $2.9 billion in the first half of fiscal 2027. Most of this came out of its cash and investments, which cut the diluted share count to about 246 million. Values below are per current share. Base case, $157.92 per share. Revenue growth continues to slow along the path it is already on: 13% this year, then 11%, easing to 5% by year eight. Paradox (conversational AI for job applicants) and Sana (AI knowledge tools) were each bought for $1.1 billion in late 2025. They help this year and then stop adding to growth, which is how we account for acquired technology wearing out. Margins widen by about a point a year for five years and then half a point a year. That follows the record of stock pay falling as a share of revenue every year since fiscal 2022 and revenue growing faster than headcount: 13% against 3% last year. Owner earnings reach about $3.9 billion in year ten. Because payroll and finance systems are rarely replaced, we hold that level for another ten years and then fade it to zero. Bear case, $51.92 per share. This case is built from risks Workday itself discloses. Its pricing follows customer headcount, and it already reports smaller headcount commitments at renewal. It also reports longer sales cycles in government, higher education and healthcare, and warns that lasting cuts in customer headcount can materially hurt results. Growth falls from 10% to zero by year six and revenue then shrinks 2% a year. Margins stay near today's level. Cash taxes, now low, could rise. The $1.0 billion of 3.5% notes due April 1, 2027 are refinanced at higher cost. Earnings fade to zero over the following decade. Debt is $3.0 billion against about $3.4 billion of cash and securities at July 31, 2026, so leverage adds little risk. Bull case, $247.55 per share. Growth holds near 14% this year and eases to 7%. The new Flex Credits pricing for AI agents is a real lever the company has named, though still unproven. Margins widen about 1.5 points a year toward 22%, and the customer base holds its earning power for twenty years after year ten. What could make this wrong. The whole value rests on stock pay continuing to shrink relative to revenue, and on customers not cutting the headcount they pay for. Workday has also spent about $6 billion on acquisitions since fiscal 2019. That money is not counted as a cost here, so if growth needs a steady stream of purchases, the base case is too high. Capital spending was unusually low at $162 million in fiscal 2026 and ran at $139 million in the first half of fiscal 2027 alone. We assume it returns to the $250-300 million range. The margin-of-safety price is $90.00. That is about 43% below the base case, a wide margin reflecting how much the value depends on continued margin gains and on seat-based pricing holding up against AI.
