The Trade Desk runs a self-service software platform that advertising agencies and advertisers use to buy digital ads across the open internet. It earns revenue from the advertising spending clients run through the platform, so revenue rises when clients run more campaigns, spend more per campaign, or use more of its paid data and tools. Revenue was $2,896 million in 2025, up 18% from 2024, with 11% growth in gross spend on the platform behind it. About 86% of revenue came from United States clients. How we measure earnings. We start with cash from operations, remove the swings in receivables, payables and similar working-capital items, and then subtract stock compensation as a real cost. Stock compensation has been roughly $490 million a year since 2022 (about 17% of 2025 revenue), which is why per-share earnings look far smaller than reported profit. We subtract only the part of equipment and software spending needed to keep the platform running, treating the rest as growth spending. Earnings on this basis, per diluted share, were $0.05 in 2022, $0.28 in 2023, $0.66 in 2024 and $1.07 in 2025. The company has made only small acquisitions, so there is no large wasting asset inside these earnings and no adjustment for one was needed. The starting level. We use the middle of the 2022 to 2025 results, $0.47 per share. That window includes 2022, when advertising spending was soft and earnings were nearly zero after stock compensation, and it includes the higher 2024 and 2025 results. The 2025 figure of $1.07 is well above that, but we do not lift the starting level on two strong years that follow a very weak 2022. Cash from operations in the first half of 2026 was $545 million versus $456 million a year earlier, which is encouraging but is half a year. Revenue growth, however, slowed to 7% in the first half of 2026 (3% in the second quarter, $715 million versus $694 million), and net income for the half fell to $104 million from $141 million. We could not find the reason for the slowdown in the filings available to us, so we treat it as an open question rather than assuming it reverses. What holds up the earnings. Customer retention has exceeded 95% for over a decade according to the company, and revenue has risen every year from 2016 through 2025, including 2020 and 2022. That record is why we credit growth at all, but we credit it at well below the 18% of 2025: earnings per share grew 62% in 2025 ($1.07 versus $0.66), and our base case assumes only 6% in its first year, tapering to 3%. We give no credit for new products, new markets, gaining share from competitors such as Google and Amazon (both named in the company's filing as competitors), or wider margins. The company has also been buying back stock ($1.38 billion in 2025), and its average diluted share count fell from about 494 million in 2025 to about 470 million in the second quarter of 2026. We did not add any benefit from future buybacks. It carried no debt on its credit facility at the end of 2025. Base case, $8.3 per share. Earnings start at $0.47 per share and grow 6%, 6%, 6%, 5%, 5%, 4%, 4%, 3%, 3% and 3% over ten years, then hold level for ten more years, then fade to zero over the following ten. The long level stretch rests on the client retention record; the fade reflects that, beyond that point, nothing in the filings shows what keeps the earnings going. Bear case, $2.6 per share. Advertising agency holding companies choose who their agencies buy through. Two of them together accounted for 30% of gross billings in 2025, and the company's filing warns that a holding company could consolidate with one that does not use the platform or take control of its agencies' buying, reducing revenue. In this case a loss of that kind cuts earnings back to about $0.28 per share, the actual 2023 level, for ten years, then earnings fade to zero over the next ten. We do not assume anything worse than a return to a result the company has already posted. Bull case, $21.9 per share. Earnings hold at the 2025 level of $1.07 per share, which the company has already delivered, and grow 8%, 8%, 6%, 6%, 5%, 5%, 4%, 4%, 3% and 3% over ten years, stay level for fifteen more years, then fade to zero over ten. This is the case where the recent jump in cash generation turns out to be the normal level of the business. What would make this wrong. If the 2026 slowdown in revenue growth proves lasting, or if a large agency group moves its buying away from the platform, the base case is too high. If the strong 2024 and 2025 earnings keep holding while share count keeps shrinking, it is too low. We value the shares at $8.3 in the base case; given the wide gap between the cases (from $2.6 to $21.9) and the concentration among a few agency groups, the margin-of-safety price is about $4.0, roughly half the base value and not far above the bear case. One thing we could not reconcile: the second-quarter 2026 report text was not available to us, so the first-half 2026 figures come from the reported numbers only and not from management's explanation.
