Sono-Tek, based in Milton, New York, designs and builds ultrasonic spray-coating systems that lay down very thin, even layers of material. Customers use them to coat drug-eluting balloons and stents, medical diagnostics, semiconductor and electronics parts, solar cells and fuel-cell and electrolyzer membranes. It is a small business: fiscal 2026 (year to February 2026) revenue was $20.9 million with a gross margin of about 50%, 89 employees, no debt, and $14.8 million of cash and Treasury securities. How we measured earnings. We take operating cash flow, strip out swings in working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract the capital spending needed to keep the business going. Strip out the working capital timing and the business looks steadier than its cash flow does. The large customer deposits it collects on system orders move cash between years, for example $1.7 million in fiscal 2023 and a $1.0 million outflow in fiscal 2025. On this basis owner earnings over the last ten years were, per share: 3 cents (fiscal 2017), 5, 1, 6, 8, 11, 0.5 (fiscal 2023), 6, 8 and 17 cents (fiscal 2026). That is roughly $0.2 million to $2.7 million a year. Those figures include investment income on the cash pile, about $0.44 million pre-tax in fiscal 2026. We take that income out and count the securities separately. Excluding it, and setting the strong fiscal 2026 year against the weak fiscal 2023 year, the operating business has earned about $1.0 million a year in a typical recent year. The ten-year median is a little lower, and the last five years are higher. We use that $1.0 million as the starting level. We treat about $12.3 million of the $14.8 million cash and securities as surplus, keeping the rest as working cash for a business that builds systems before it is paid in full. What drives it. Fiscal 2026 showed the mix shifting under the surface. Medical sales rose 54% on drug-eluting balloon, stent and diagnostic coating work, and electronics rose 16%. Clean-energy sales fell 19% because electrolysis demand dropped after U.S. government policy changes, partly offset by solar. Multi-axis systems fell 25%, while integrated coating systems nearly doubled on several high-priced production systems. Year-end backlog was a record $9.1 million, about five months of sales. A handful of large system orders can move a year's results, and that is the main reason earnings jump around. Base case ($2.02 per share). The operating business earns about $1.0 million and grows about 2% a year, then holds that level. The 2% is credited because Sono-Tek has spent a decade steadily carrying the same nozzle technology into new coating uses, funded from its own cash. Revenue roughly doubled over that time. We credit far less than that pace because individual new markets, such as electrolysis, have proven unreliable. Last year's owner-earnings growth was much higher than 2%, but that year was lifted by a few large shipments and we do not extend it. The operating business is worth about $19.5 million, plus $12.3 million of surplus cash, against no debt. Bear case ($1.25 per share). This case includes a downturn like the 2016-2019 period, when sales fell 19% in one year and owner earnings were close to zero for three years. Here, operating earnings fall to zero and then $0.1 million over two years as clean-energy and capital-equipment orders dry up. After that the business recovers to about $0.65 million a year on its medical and electronics base and stays there. In this case the business is worth about $9.7 million. Surplus cash is set lower, at $10 million, because it is drawn down during the slump. There is no debt. More than half the bear value is cash. Bull case ($3.91 per share). Fiscal 2026's margin largely holds, with operating earnings near $2.0 million as the medical and microelectronics production systems now in backlog keep shipping. Earnings then grow about 5% a year for ten years and hold that level. The business is worth about $49 million plus $12.3 million of cash. These figures are not comparable to our previous estimates, which treated customer-deposit and other working-capital swings as earnings. The business itself has not changed materially since then. The shares appear worth roughly $1.25 to $3.90, with about $2 as the central estimate. Margin-of-safety price. We are only moderately sure of the earnings level. Ten years of history show a profitable, debt-free business, but its profits have ranged from almost nothing to $2.7 million, and in any year they depend on a few large orders. The worst plausible outcome is a long capital-equipment drought combined with losing the medical coating customers to in-house or competing processes. Even then the company has no lenders and about 94 cents a share of cash and securities, so it would shrink rather than fail. The main risk to owners is management spending the cash: the filings describe plans for possible acquisitions and rapid growth rather than returning cash. If we are wrong about the normal earnings level and it is closer to $0.6 million, and part of the cash is spent on an acquisition that earns little, the shares are worth about $1.25 to $1.50. The company pays no dividend, so any return in the cases must come from the value being recognized. The price assumes a three-to-four-year holding period. The margin-of-safety price is $1.10, little more than the cash backing an operating business that has earned money in every recent year. Reaching the central value over three to four years from that price implies about a 20% annual return. The downturn case implies a modest gain. Above that price the return depends too heavily on the medical and microelectronics strength continuing, which we cannot yet count on.

Sales geography
United States and Canada (about two-thirds of sales), Europe, Middle East and Africa (about 18%), Asia Pacific including China, Taiwan and Japan (about 13%)
Historical growth strategy
Organic growth by adapting its core ultrasonic nozzle technology to new coating applications and end markets (medical-device coatings, microelectronics, solar and fuel-cell/electrolysis, industrial), moving up from nozzles to higher-priced integrated production systems, funded entirely from internal cash with no debt; management has discussed acquisitions but none has been made.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a micro-cap that ran from low single digits to a spike above $10 in 2021 on clean-energy enthusiasm, then gave back most of the move in a long series of lower highs. Since 2023 the shares have chopped sideways in a roughly $3 to $6 range; the long-term moving averages are flat, so the pattern reads as a base rather than an established trend, with a breakout above the top of the range needed to signal a new uptrend.
