Amtech Systems makes reflow ovens used to bond advanced chips (including the AI processors packaged by outsourced assembly houses), diffusion and belt furnaces for power-semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, and polishing, cleaning and consumable products for wafer production. It reports two segments, Thermal Processing Solutions and Semiconductor Fabrication Solutions. Sales are lumpy because most revenue comes from large systems shipped when customers expand capacity. In fiscal 2025, 27% of revenue came from the United States, 22% from China, 19% from Taiwan and 7% from Malaysia; the company builds reflow systems and furnaces in Shanghai, so tariffs and export controls touch both its supply and its customers. What the record shows. Revenue was $113.3 million in fiscal 2023, $101.2 million in 2024 and $79.4 million in 2025 as shipments of belt furnaces, diffusion furnaces and polishing equipment dropped. We measure earnings as operating cash flow, less swings in receivables, inventory and payables, less stock compensation, less the capital spending needed just to stay in business. On that measure the company produced negative earnings in four of the seven fiscal years from 2019 to 2025 and about negative $2.7 million in total. It spent about $35 million on acquisitions in fiscal 2023, chiefly Entrepix, and then wrote off about $27 million of goodwill (fiscal 2024 and 2025) and about $9 million of acquired intangibles (fiscal 2023 to 2025). Fiscal 2016 to 2018 are not used to judge today's business because they include the former solar-equipment operation, which has since been sold. What has changed. The company moved most equipment manufacturing to contract manufacturers, sold and downsized its Massachusetts and Arizona properties and cut staff. Gross margin was 44% in the September 2025 quarter, about 46% in the first half of fiscal 2026 and 50% in the June 2026 quarter, against 34% for fiscal 2025 as a whole (which carried $6.6 million of inventory write-downs). For the nine months to June 2026, revenue was $61.8 million (up 4%; the June quarter was $22.4 million, up 14%), operating income was $4.8 million, and our measure of earnings was roughly $4.7 million, including about $0.5 million of interest income. With four quarters in a row at the higher margin, we treat the leaner cost structure as real and set a normal earnings level of $5.0 million a year, or about $0.28 a share on 18.1 million shares (17.5 million outstanding plus dilutive options). That is well above the $0.4 million earned in fiscal 2025, and the reason is the four quarters just described. It assumes revenue of about $80 million, below the seven-year average of about $91 million. The fiscal year ended September 30, 2026 has not yet been reported. Cash and debt. After a June 3, 2026 offering of 2,926,829 shares for $56.5 million net, the company held $83.1 million of cash at June 30, 2026 and no borrowings; its only debt-like item is a $0.2 million finance lease. We treat $10 million as cash the business needs to operate (part of it sits in China, the UK, Singapore and Malaysia), leaving $72.9 million, or $4.03 a share, as excess. Operating lease obligations of about $17.7 million are already paid out of operating cash flow, and a sublease of the Spartanburg, South Carolina site begins in August 2026. Base case: $6.62 a share. Earnings hold at $5.0 million a year for ten years, then fade to zero over the following ten, because the company's long operating history supports a long life but nothing we can name and evidence supports earnings beyond that. The business is worth $47.0 million ($2.60 a share). It owes nothing beyond the $0.2 million lease, and excess cash adds $72.9 million, for $119.9 million, or $6.62. We credit no growth. AI-related reflow orders are encouraging, but the company's own backlog was only $19.9 million at September 30, 2025 (down 21%, with two customers making up 29% and 11% of it), and we left out any AI, silicon carbide recovery, new-product or acquisition benefit because none is contracted or has a multi-year record. Bear case: $2.97 a share. A downturn like fiscal 2023 to 2025, when revenue fell 30%, returns for three years: with revenue near $56 million, margin back near 42% and some cost cuts, the business burns $3.0 million a year. It then recovers only to $2.5 million a year for seven years and fades to zero over the next ten. Management also spends $28 million of the new cash on acquisitions that fail, comparable to the roughly $36 million of goodwill and intangible write-offs that followed the fiscal 2023 purchases. The business is worth $8.8 million ($0.49 a share), it owes nothing, and the remaining excess cash of $44.9 million ($2.48 a share) brings the total to $53.7 million, or $2.97. Even this case carries its costs without borrowing. Bull case: $8.55 a share. Revenue returns to about $100 million, a level reached in fiscal 2024, at today's roughly 48% margin: earnings of $6.0 million next year and $9.0 million a year for the following nine, then a ten-year fade. The business is worth $81.8 million ($4.52 a share) and, with no debt and the full $72.9 million of excess cash ($4.03 a share), the total is $154.7 million, or $8.55. Margin-of-safety price: $4.00. The earnings level rests on only four good quarters against a seven-year record of roughly zero, so we are not sure of it. The worst plausible outcome is a repeat of the last downturn alongside another failed acquisition; with no debt the company would survive that, but shares would be worth about $3. If the margin gain proves temporary, the operating business is worth little and the shares are worth about the $4.03 a share of excess cash, less whatever management spends on deals. At $4.00 the price roughly equals the cash alone, with almost no value assigned to the operating business. The price assumes a holding period of three years or more; the company has never paid a dividend, so any return comes from the retained earnings of about $0.28 a share a year and from the cash staying intact. If the base case plays out, a three-year holding period from $4.00 implies well over 20% a year; if the bear case arrives, it implies a loss of about a quarter. Our earlier figures (base $10.10, from September 2026) were built on a different basis and are not comparable. Two items could not be confirmed from the filings we reviewed: the order backlog after September 2025 and the split of revenue between AI and other markets.

Sales geography
United States (27% of fiscal 2025 revenue), China (22%), Taiwan (19%), Malaysia (7%), Singapore (2%), Germany (2%), United Kingdom (2%), Hungary (2%), Czech Republic (2%), other Asia, Europe and the Americas
Historical growth strategy
Growth through acquisitions of complementary semiconductor and electronics equipment businesses (BTU in 2015, Intersurface Dynamics in 2021, Entrepix in 2023) plus organic product development in reflow ovens for AI chip packaging and wafer-polishing consumables; it sold its solar-equipment operation, shifted to a semi-fabless contract-manufacturing model, and sold and downsized owned real estate to cut fixed costs. Acquisitions in 2023 were followed by large goodwill and intangible write-offs.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a volatile small-cap that has re-rated sharply over the past year and is now consolidating in the mid-teens. Recent price data show a high near $18.25 on July 22, 2026 and a pullback to about $13.61 in mid-September, with a sharp 12% one-day drop on August 19, 2026 on volume of roughly 1.27 million shares (versus a typical 250,000 to 400,000) and a rebound to about $16.61 by September 29. That puts the stock in a roughly $13.60 to $18.25 trading range, with the July high as resistance and the September low as support. Higher lows since mid-September and a 5%-plus daily gain on September 29 suggest improving momentum, but a close above the July high would be needed to confirm a new leg up, while a break below $13.60 would signal a failed base. Daily swings of 5% or more point to a momentum-driven name that can reverse quickly.
