Snowflake sells a cloud data platform on a consumption basis: customers commit to capacity contracts and then use it. Product revenue was $4.47 billion of $4.68 billion total in the fiscal year ended January 2026, and total revenue grew 29%. Contracted future revenue (remaining performance obligations) was $9.8 billion at January 31, 2026, up 42% from $6.9 billion a year earlier, and net revenue retention was 125%. Growth is not the question here. The question is whether the growth produces earnings for shareholders after paying employees. How we measure earnings. We start with operating cash flow, remove the swings from working capital (receivables, prepaid items, payables, accrued liabilities and, most importantly, deferred revenue from customers paying ahead), and subtract stock-based compensation and the part of capital spending needed to stand still. Stock compensation is treated as a real cost: it was $1.60 billion in fiscal 2026, about 34% of revenue. Sales commissions capitalized and lease payments were left in, since they are ongoing costs of winning and housing the business. On that basis owner earnings were about negative $1.16 billion in fiscal 2026 (negative $3.45 per share) and about negative $1.16 billion in fiscal 2025 (negative $3.50 per share). They have been negative every year since listing. Excluding the deferred-revenue build matters: it added $755 million to fiscal 2026 operating cash flow, but it exists only while sales keep growing. Direction of travel. Stock compensation has fallen from 51% of revenue in fiscal 2021 to 34% in fiscal 2026, and 28% in the first half of fiscal 2027 (versus 36% a year earlier). Rough owner earnings for that half were about negative $370 million versus about negative $580 million a year earlier, on revenue up 34% to $2.94 billion. That is real progress, but it is not yet a positive number, and it was flat between fiscal 2023 and 2024 (42% of revenue both years), so we do not treat it as a settled mechanism. Bear case: $0 per share. Owner earnings are negative today and the contracted backlog only covers part of a year of revenue, so we cannot name evidence for positive owner earnings. Snowflake also owes $2.3 billion of zero-coupon convertible notes ($1.15 billion due October 1, 2027 and $1.15 billion due October 1, 2029). We do not subtract them, because they are covered by $4.8 billion of cash and investments, but continued negative owner earnings would steadily consume that cushion. Base case: $0 per share. Credited growth must be secured or proven and repeatable. About 46% of the $9.8 billion backlog, roughly $4.5 billion, is expected to become revenue in the year to January 2027, which is below revenue already earned in fiscal 2026, so it does not by itself show growth. Falling stock compensation, market expansion and share gains are not credited in this case. With those left out, the business as it stands does not earn a positive owner-earnings stream. Bull case: about $66 per share. Here the company's own demonstrated trends continue. Revenue grows 30% in fiscal 2027 (the first half grew 34% and backlog grew 42%), tapering by three points a year to 3% in year ten, reaching roughly $21 billion. Owner-earnings margin improves four points a year from negative 15% (the first half ran near negative 13%), matching the roughly 4 points a year achieved from fiscal 2023 to fiscal 2026, and turns positive in year five. We stop improvement at 10% rather than assume it runs on indefinitely, a level the company has not yet shown. After year ten we hold roughly $2.1 billion a year flat, resting on 125% net retention and 790 Forbes Global 2000 customers. About $19.5 billion of the roughly $22 billion present value comes from those years after year ten, so this case is highly sensitive to execution. Stress test. If stock compensation were not a real cost, results would look far better. Cash paid for taxes on employee share vesting ($673 million) and buybacks ($874 million) in fiscal 2026 did not stop diluted shares rising from 332.7 million to 337.5 million, so the cost is genuine. What we could not fully reconcile: quarterly working-capital swings are large and seasonal (deferred revenue fell $807 million in the first half of fiscal 2027), so half-year owner-earnings figures are approximations. Margin-of-safety price: $6 per share. The base case gives no operating value, so the margin-of-safety price is set near the value of cash and investments net of the convertible notes (about $2.5 billion, roughly $7 per share).
