Silgan Holdings makes three things for branded consumer-goods companies: metal food cans and ends (about 48% of 2025 sales of $6.48 billion, mainly in the United States and Canada, where it is the largest supplier of cans for vegetables, fruit, soup and pet food); dispensing systems and specialty closures such as trigger sprayers, pumps, fragrance dispensers and caps (about 42% of sales and half of segment profit, a business assembled through acquisitions from WestRock in 2017, Albea in 2020 and Weener Packaging in late 2024); and custom plastic containers (about 10%). Roughly 90% of metal container sales and a majority of the other segments are sold under multi-year supply contracts that pass metal and resin costs through to customers. Nestle (12.3% of sales, through the metal can business) and Campbell together account for about 20% of revenue. Earnings level. We measure the cash the business produces for owners as operating cash flow, less the swing in working capital, less stock compensation, less the capital spending needed to maintain the plants (spending tied to revenue growth is treated as investment). On that basis owners earned $367 million in 2025 ($3.44 a share), after $185 million of cash interest. Because the company carries substantial debt, we value the business before its lenders and then subtract what it owes. Before interest, the business generated $446 million in 2020, $488 million in 2021, $573 million in 2022, $543 million in 2023, $479 million in 2024 and $552 million in 2025. We use 2021 onward, the period after the Albea dispensing purchase reshaped the company, which includes the 2023-2024 customer destocking cycle as well as the post-pandemic peak. The median is about $540 million, and we anchor at roughly $530 million because the 2025 figure includes a full year of Weener and the most recent quarters have been softer: net income for the first half of 2026 was $139 million against $157 million a year earlier, even though sales rose about 7%. Two accounting judgements matter. First, a line called other operating items has drained cash in almost every year (about $270 million over ten years, including plant-closure costs); we treat it as a real recurring cost, not timing. Second, amortization of acquired customer relationships, about $65 million a year, is added back because it is a sunk acquisition cost; the decay it represents is carried instead in a slow fade of earnings in every case. Growth. Business cash flow rose about 15% in 2025, but much of that came from owning Weener for a full year and from recovering after the destocking; neither repeats. The base case starts year one at about $520 million, below the trailing rate. We credit no growth from acquisitions: Silgan has bought businesses for thirty years, but its deals are large, debt-financed bets rather than small, repeatable steps, so future purchases are left out of every case. Volume in canned food has been flat to declining for years, which is why earnings fade after year ten in each case. Bear case: a 2023-style destocking cycle or loss of share at a large customer cuts business cash flow to about $430-450 million for three years (roughly the 16% peak-to-trough fall seen from 2022 to 2024, deepened), followed by a recovery to about $470 million and then a 2% annual decline as can volumes erode and the 1.4% secured notes maturing in 2026 and the 2028 notes are refinanced at higher rates. The business is worth about $6.1 billion; with debt valued at about $3.7 billion including the cost of refinancing, the shares are worth about $22.85. Interest of under $200 million stays comfortably covered even in the trough. Base case: business cash flow of about $520 million next year and $530 million thereafter for a decade under existing contracts, then fading 0.5% a year. The business is worth about $8.4 billion; net debt is about $3.3 billion (total debt of $4.35 billion at year-end 2025 less year-end cash beyond operating needs, with mid-year borrowings that are seasonal and already reflected in the working-capital treatment), leaving about $48.41 a share. Bull case: the dispensing franchise keeps shifting the mix toward higher-margin products, as it has since 2020, lifting business cash flow from $550 million to roughly 1% annual growth for a decade with no fade afterward; the business is worth about $9.9 billion and the shares about $62.27 after the same $3.3 billion of net debt. What changed. The previously published figures were prepared on a different basis and are not comparable. Since then the business has delivered a full year of Weener, reduced year-end net debt, and reported a softer first half of 2026. Margin-of-safety price. We are reasonably confident in the earnings level: the product is a low-cost necessity for food and household brands, most volume is under contract with cost pass-through, and even the 2023 destocking year produced over $540 million of business cash flow. The worst plausible outcome no case fully captures is losing Nestle or Campbell volume while a destocking cycle coincides with refinancing the 2026 and 2028 notes; with leverage near three times cash earnings and hard, specialized plant assets, the company would survive that, but the shares would likely sit in the low $20s for years. The two things we are most likely to be wrong about are how fast canned-food volume erodes and whether the dispensing acquisitions earn their price; if both go the wrong way, the shares are worth about the bear case. The business pays a dividend of about $0.80 a share during the holding period, and the price assumes value is recognised within about three years. From $27, the base case reached in three years, with dividends along the way, implies a little over 20% a year, while the bear case implies a modest loss rather than a permanent wipe-out. The margin-of-safety price is $27.

Sales geography
United States (about two-thirds of sales, concentrated in the Midwest, West and South where food-can plants sit near vegetable, fruit and pet-food packers, including California and Wisconsin) and Canada; the remaining third from Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom), Latin America (Mexico, Brazil) and Asia (China, India, Thailand).
Historical growth strategy
Growth by acquisition, financed with debt and then paid down from cash flow: a series of purchases built the dispensing and closures business (WestRock dispensing 2017, Albea dispensing 2020, Gateway Plastics and Unicep 2021, Weener Packaging 2024) on top of the original metal food-can franchise, supplemented by multi-year supply contracts with large consumer-goods customers, plant consolidations to lower costs, steady dividends and periodic share repurchases.
Chart analysis
A chartist would describe Silgan as a long, slow-moving range trader rather than a trending stock. After a strong run in the mid-2010s the shares spent most of 2018 to 2025 oscillating in a broad band roughly between the high $30s and the mid $50s, with rallies repeatedly failing near the top of that range and sell-offs repeatedly halting near the bottom. The long-term moving averages have been flattening, which a technician would read as a lack of sustained momentum in either direction; a decisive close above the upper band would be needed to signal a new uptrend, while a break below the lower band would mark a breakdown from a multi-year base.
