Boston Beer is a diversified beverage-alcohol brewer whose portfolio now spans well beyond its original Samuel Adams craft beer line: Twisted Tea (the largest flavored malt beverage brand in the country since 2022), Truly Hard Seltzer, Angry Orchard hard cider, Dogfish Head craft beer, Sun Cruiser, a licensed Hard Mountain Dew partnership with PepsiCo, and newer entrants like Sinless Vodka Cocktails and Arizona Hard Tea. To value the business, we looked at the cash the company actually generates for its owners each year: operating cash flow, less swings in working capital, less stock-based compensation, less the capital spending needed just to keep existing breweries and can lines running (separated from the capital spent to add new capacity for growth). On that basis, owner earnings normalize to roughly $9.75 per share, based on the four years since the hard-seltzer category's 2020 pandemic-driven demand spike and its 2021 unwind worked their way through the business. That 2021 correction triggered an $18.5 million equipment write-down and a roughly $63 million excess-inventory charge; we treated 2020 and 2021 as distorted, one-off years and anchored on 2022 through 2025 instead, since that period better reflects the business as it exists today. Three things do the most work in the estimate. First, whether Twisted Tea keeps growing: it is still the category leader in flavored malt beverages and the company is layering in Twisted Tea Light and Extreme, which it expects to keep contributing through 2026. Second, whether Truly and the broader hard-seltzer category have found a floor or continue to erode as younger drinkers moderate alcohol consumption, a trend the company itself flags as a risk. Third, an unresolved supplier lawsuit: Ardagh, the company's can supplier, is seeking roughly $300 million plus interest over an alleged shortfall in contracted aluminum can purchases from 2021 to 2026, with trial set for March 2026. Boston Beer disputes the claim and has already won back a partial summary-judgment ruling in its favor, but the range of possible outcomes is wide. Our base case assumes Twisted Tea keeps growing at a mid-single-digit pace, Truly and Angry Orchard stabilize near current levels, and the newer, smaller brands add modest incremental growth, for combined per-share owner earnings growth of roughly 4% a year over the next decade (helped in part by continued share buybacks -- Boston Beer has cut its share count by more than 15% since 2016 and carries no debt). We assumed the Ardagh matter settles for a moderate amount well short of the full claim. Beyond the ten-year window, we assumed the company's established trademarks, none of which expire the way a patent does, support a slow-growing perpetual cash stream, since the capital needed to keep breweries and can lines running is already charged inside owner earnings. On these assumptions the shares are worth roughly $237. Our bear case assumes the moderation trend bites harder than expected: Twisted Tea's growth flattens as new entrants crowd the flavored-malt-beverage category, Truly resumes its decline, and input costs such as aluminum, hops, and freight outpace pricing, pushing owner earnings down into the high single digits per share for several years before a partial recovery. We also assumed Ardagh prevails for a substantial judgment, roughly $220 million, which we treated as a direct cash cost. On those assumptions the shares would be worth around $116; the litigation outcome alone accounts for roughly $19 of that gap versus a scenario where it is resolved favorably. Our bull case assumes Twisted Tea's momentum continues, the newer brands (Sinless Vodka Cocktails, an expanded Hard Mountain Dew) become real growth contributors, margins expand as input costs ease, and the Ardagh dispute is resolved with minimal cost to the company, all alongside continued buybacks, for combined per-share owner earnings growth near 9% a year. On those assumptions the shares would be worth roughly $363. Because Boston Beer's brands do not have a hard expiration date, a large share of the value in every case, a bit more than half in the bear and base cases and just over two-thirds in the bull case, comes from what the business is assumed to earn after the ten-year window. We have kept that long-run assumption modest (under 1% annual growth even in the bull case) because consumer tastes in this industry can and do shift quickly, as the hard-seltzer boom and bust already showed. Given the width of this range, the margin-of-safety price sits at a meaningful discount to our base-case estimate, at roughly $155 per share. One item we could not fully verify from the filings: the exact contractual term of the Hard Mountain Dew licensing arrangement with PepsiCo was not disclosed, so we have not assumed it becomes a permanent, large contributor to the business beyond the roughly 2% of revenue it represents today.
