Richardson Electronics designs, makes and distributes specialized power, RF and microwave components: electron tubes and subsystems used in semiconductor wafer-fab equipment, broadcast, industrial and medical equipment, plus energy-storage and power-management products and custom displays. It manufactures in LaFox, Illinois, Marlborough, Massachusetts and Donaueschingen, Germany, and holds long-term, often exclusive, distribution agreements with many component makers. Fiscal 2026 (ended May 30, 2026) sales were $228.6 million, up 9.4%: about $160.5 million from the power and microwave segment, about $37 million from displays and about $31 million from green energy. Operating income was $6.5 million, about 2.8% of sales. Some products are made in China and face US tariffs; the company says tariff changes did not materially affect fiscal 2026. What the business earns. We measure the cash left for owners after the capital spending needed to stand still and after stock compensation, with swings in receivables, inventory and payables stripped out. On that basis the last ten fiscal years, per share, were: -0.72 (2017), 0.22, -0.02, 0.06, 0.30, 1.13, 1.33, -0.02, 0.12 and 0.47 (2026). Two boom years (2022 and 2023, driven by semiconductor-equipment demand and supply-chain shortages) sit between long stretches near zero. We take the middle of fiscal 2021 through 2026, which holds one full up-and-down cycle, giving $0.38 a share. Fiscal 2017 to 2020 are left out of the level because they include the now-sold Healthcare business and a $6.3 million goodwill write-off in 2019. We do not lift the level for the strong fourth quarter (sales of $66.2 million, up 27.6% from a year earlier); one quarter is not enough. Per-share earnings rose from $0.12 to $0.47 in the latest year, and our first-year assumption is the $0.38 level, below that latest actual, so no reversal of a slowdown is assumed. About 3 cents a share of the stream is interest earned on cash; we remove it because the cash is valued separately. Charges such as the 2019 goodwill write-off and the 2025 Healthcare disposal loss are non-cash and are not deducted. Because working-capital swings are stripped out, growth here is not free: the 2022 and 2023 booms absorbed more than $50 million in extra inventory, which is why we credit no growth. Balance sheet. There is no borrowing; cash is $31.8 million and a $20 million credit line, extended to 2028, is undrawn. We treat $12 million of cash as needed to run a global distributor and the remaining $19.8 million, or $1.34 a share, as excess. Inventory is $103.0 million (of which $86.5 million finished goods), flat on the year; receivables rose to $33.2 million from $24.1 million, in line with the strong fourth quarter (about 46 days of sales). Operating leases and payables are not treated as debt. Base case, $5.60 a share. Earnings stay flat at about $0.35 a share (the $0.38 level less interest income) for ten years, then decline 5% a year, because management itself says the market for its trailing-edge tube products is declining and the newer RF and power lines have no multi-year record to lean on. The operating business is worth about $4.26 a share, it owes nothing, and the excess cash adds $1.34 (figures rounded). Left out: share gains in RF and wireless, energy-storage growth (the green energy segment grew 23.6% in 2025 and 7.3% in 2026, only two years of record), AI-related equipment demand and any unwinding of inventory, because none is contracted or a repeated multi-year process. Bear case, $1.59. A downturn like fiscal 2024 and 2025, when sales fell 25% from $262.7 million to $196.5 million and per-share earnings were -$0.02 and $0.12, followed by a return to the fiscal 2017 to 2021 middle of about $0.06 for the remaining eight years, fading 10% a year afterwards. The loss of the one customer that was 14% of sales ($31.5 million) fits inside this path; two suppliers also each account for over 10% of cost of sales. The operating business is worth about $0.24 a share, it owes nothing, and excess cash adds $1.34. We give no credit for turning the $103 million of inventory into cash, because nothing in the filings evidences that. Bull case, $9.13. Earnings of $1.00 a share for five years (below the $1.13 and $1.33 of 2022 and 2023), then $0.50 for five years, then a 5% annual fade. Supports: the fourth-quarter sales run rate of about $265 million matches fiscal 2023's $262.7 million, and the LaFox manufacturing capacity was built in 2023. The operating business is worth about $7.78 a share, it owes nothing, and excess cash adds $1.34. What could prove this wrong. If this year's improvement in profit margins is permanent, the base is too low. If the large customer leaves or a wafer-fab slump returns, results move toward the bear. We tested the assumption that inventory is sound: reserves fell to $6.3 million from $7.6 million and annual provisions are only about $0.5 million, so no deterioration shows, though reserves cover little against $86.5 million of finished goods. We also tested the fourth-quarter receivables jump and found it tracks sales rather than stretched terms. Change from the previous analysis. Our August 2026 figures ($4.00, $7.15 and $13.30) were built on a different basis and are not comparable. No new annual filing has appeared since. We also did not rely on the $164 million order backlog and roughly $45 million of strategic supplier inventory cited in that earlier work, because we could not find either in the company's annual report. Margin-of-safety price, $3.00. We are not very sure of the earnings level: it has ranged from -$0.72 to +$1.33 a share, the last full cycle shows the business can earn close to nothing for years (fiscal 2017 to 2021 totalled about -$0.16 a share), and the middle of $0.38 leans on the latest improving year. The worst plausible outcome is another wafer-fab slump, loss of the 14% customer and a write-down of finished-goods inventory that reserves barely cover. The structure would survive that: no debt, $31.8 million cash, an undrawn credit line, and a dividend of about $3.4 million a year (roughly 23 cents a share) paid through the weak years. If we are wrong about the normal level and it is $0.20 rather than $0.38, the shares are worth about $3.37; if the weak 2017 to 2021 pattern returns, $1.59. The price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period, with dividends of roughly 8% a year at this price. $3.00 is the company's whole cash balance of about $2.16 a share plus $0.84 for a business with $229 million of sales and $136 million of inventory and receivables. From that price the base case implies a 20% annual return if the business merely earns the middle level described above, and the bear case implies a value of $1.59, with the company's cash making up most of the margin-of-safety price.

Sales geography
Sales are booked in four regions: North America (largely the United States, plus Canada and Mexico), Europe (including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom), Asia/Pacific (including China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan) and Latin America (including Brazil). North America is the largest region.
Historical growth strategy
After selling its large RF distribution unit in 2011, Richardson refocused on niche engineered solutions rather than broad-line distribution. Growth has come from long-term, often exclusive distribution agreements with tube and RF component makers; buying out remaining stock when a manufacturer exits a product line; in-house manufacturing of proprietary tubes and power products (LaFox, Illinois); engineering design-in support to win customers; and small adjacent bets such as green-energy power products and custom displays. Weak units are divested (Healthcare assets sold in January 2025). Growth has been cyclical and mostly organic rather than acquisition-led.
Chart analysis
A chartist would see a volatile small-cap in a strong one-year recovery. The shares closed near $18.99 on October 2, 2026, roughly double the 52-week low of about $9.37 and about 18% below the 52-week high of about $23.15. Since late July the stock has traded in a wide band, with a high near $21.80 and a sharp 17.7% one-day drop on July 24, followed by a rebound of nearly 9% on August 4 and a mid-September low near $16.28. The 16 to 17 dollar area is the nearest support and the 21.80 to 23 dollar area is overhead resistance. The rebound from the September low is constructive, but the stock remains below its summer peak, so a close above about $22 would be needed to confirm a fresh breakout, while a break below $16 would suggest the one-year uptrend is rolling over. Daily swings above 5% on several days and a beta above 1.2 mark it as a high-volatility name.
