Proto Labs makes custom prototype and low-volume production parts on demand (injection molding, CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal) and runs an online quoting marketplace (Hubs/network sourcing). Customers are thousands of engineers, none dominant, and orders are one-off, so there is no contracted backlog to lean on. The company carries no meaningful debt and held about $111 million of cash at the end of 2025. Earnings power. We measure what the business leaves for owners: operating cash flow, less swings in working capital, less stock compensation (a real cost), less the part of capital spending needed just to stand still. On that basis owner earnings per share were $1.22 in 2016, peaked near $1.65 in 2017 and $1.64 in 2020, fell to $0.89 in 2022 and $0.95 in 2023 (heavy capacity spending, higher stock compensation, and the closures of the Japan and Germany operations), and recovered to $1.61 in 2024 and $1.90 in 2025 as capital spending fell to $9 to $15 million and the share count dropped from about 27.4 million to 24.2 million through buybacks. We anchor on the median of 2022 to 2025, about $1.28 per share, because the business was reshaped in 2022 to 2023. Growth in 2025 was about 18% but was helped by unusually low capex; capex has ranged 2% to 7% of revenue and D&A is about $34 million a year, so we do not treat the 2024-25 spending as permanent. Year-one growth is assumed at 0%, below the trailing 18%, because nothing dated in the filings says that rate continues. Bear case (about $8 per share): owner earnings settle near the 2022-23 level of about $0.90 for ten years as capex returns toward the 4% to 7% of revenue seen in 2019-2023, then the earning power fades to zero over the following ten years as no evidenced replacement demand persists. Base case (about $15): owner earnings hold flat at about $1.28 for fifteen years, reflecting a 20-year record of profitable operation and a repeat-order customer base, then fade to zero over the next fifteen. Bull case (about $23): owner earnings stay at the 2025 level of about $1.90 for fifteen years, then fade over fifteen. We give no credit for revenue growth, new products, the marketplace, or margin expansion, because none is contracted or a proven repeatable mechanism; the share count reduction from buybacks is not credited beyond what is already in per-share figures. Judgements: large non-cash charges (depreciation, amortisation of acquired intangibles, impairments) are added back automatically; the acquired-intangible decay is carried by the fade in every case rather than by lowering the earnings level. Working capital swings, notably a $25.6 million build in 2021, were removed. Testing the case against the filing, management states recent capex has varied between 2% and 7% of revenue, which is why the base does not rely on the 2024 low. Nothing could not be reconciled from the filings. What would make this estimate wrong: capex staying near 2% to 3% of revenue while revenue grows would lift value; sustained revenue declines or another round of plant closures and write-offs would push it toward the bear case.
